Can anyone please enlighten me on people's obsession with McTominay?

He's very very average. Wouldn't get in a current top 9 bar Sheffield United possibly.

He's the poorer of Fred and Matic. Gets himself injured by flying into tackles needlessly trying to get the fans to cheer him and says the right things.

He struggles to pick out a pass which slows down our play especially with his sideways and backwards malarky.

He's been involved in 4/5 goals in 4 years or so. Creates little or nothing. although He's more of a sitting player he should still pick out passes over the top or through balls like Carrick.

He's very similar to the one and only Sunderland legend that is Lee Cattermole no quality just graft and gets injured tackling.

Not a player that's good enough if want to challenge.

If he was at another club I guarantee not one person in here would want him at our club.

Ffs mctominays turn then 🤣🤣.

15 Feb 2020 09:50:54
Really? The kid that has worked harder than any other midfield player? The kid that has sometimes held the middle together on his own? Popped up with some important goals at important times and made some big tackles. He is a young cm in a struggling midfield. He may give the ball away sometimes but at least he tries to make things happen. I bet you were saying the same about Darren Fletcher and any proper fan knows what he was worth. Stop getting on youngsters backs. Especially one that both Jose and SAF see a lot of potential in. Especially when he hasn't kicked a ball in two months. Find something else to bitch about if you must bitch. Embarassing.

Sometimes I wonder if you are McT's ex lol :)

Mr. Jurgen Klopp himself is an admirer of Scott.
He is improving every year which is what everyone wants to see. And he is just 23, therefore has a lot of scope to improve.

Before the injury, he was the best midfielder in the team.

15 Feb 2020 10:10:45
To be fair I think his performances this season have been a bit overstated - but that always seems to happen when youngsters break through into the first team. Especially at United.

However, his performances deserve that step up. He will never be a truly top class player, but he is making the best of the limited ability he does have. He adds drive and desire. He works hard and gives his all for the team. He clearly cares a great deal, and always gives his best.

Maybe he is not the most naturally gifted, but I can think of a few 'stars' (one in particular) that could learn a thing or two from him.

In an era of Pogba's thank god for the tonic that is McTominay.

I'd take one McT over 11 Pogcraps anyday.

15 Feb 2020 10:52:10
I'm a big fan, but then I have always liked the players that do the dirty work and not always get the praise.
Is he world class, no one is saying that. Is he very good and makes other players better yes.
For me he is similar to Jordan Henderson a few years back, criticised by fans but loved by managers who appreciate what he does.

15 Feb 2020 10:59:58
What am I reading here. in one paragraph you say he’s like Carrick and the next Catermole?

I think the fairer question would be is he worthy of the hype.

For me Jose knows a player and rated him highly.

I like his mental qualities in leadership and organisation. Furthermore a good way to judge a player is the how the team look with out them. Scott and Pogba have been out for similar time and both have been missed maybe Scott more so that speaks volumes.

To further highlight Scott’s contribution look at all the Big games where we’ve taken a result, Scott’s been fantastic in nearly all those games. Also away Camp Nou he was quality.

I think under Poch he could play like Moussa Dembele (Belgian) did for him.

Really looking forward to seeing him come back into the team. A three of Scotty, Fred and Bruno sounds like 1950s midfield too and I’m all for it!

Wilbot - Mctominay has scored scored 3 premier league goals this season, which incidentally is more than Fred, Matic, Pogba, Pereira, Mata and Lingard combined.

I appreciate this isn't exactly a glowing indictment of his talents but just emphasis how poor we've been in midfield this season and maybe your picking on the wrong player pal.

What that says about the rest of them I'll leave to your own interpretation.

Every squad needs a player like Mctominay in my opinion. His passing has improved and he's actually been very effective at driving us forward from midfield this season breaking the lines and opening up space in attacking positions. Football is not about flicks, tricks and Hollywood passes but about influencing the game and Mctominay is starting to do that in both defensive and attacking situations. Just like Butt and Fletcher before him he's a hard working, disciplined, dependable footballer that will never let you down in both attitude or application.

15 Feb 2020 12:08:01
Sure one of Mctominays goals was an own goal but for some reason was given to him. He had an assist of which James ran from 50 to about 18 yards and scored so wasn't much if an assist.

I didn't mention Mctominay is like Carrick I said he should pick balls over the top or through balls like Carrick did.

He's on par with Cattermole.

You can go get 10 players McTomminays level in the Championship. I'd take Kelvin Phillips over him every day of the week.

Matic is still better player although many say his 'legs' have gone.

He's most over rated player I've heard people rave about honestly.

Same as Maguire although he's picked up a bit but still about 10 goals his fault this season though.

15 Feb 2020 12:15:28
Mctominay does not try to make things happen. Making things happen would be trying through balls or balls over the top.

He slows the game down and stops counters at times by playing to safely.

15 Feb 2020 12:27:10
“Scott McTominay is a good example of the problem, " he told Eurosport. "He just runs around trying to kick people, thumping the badge. He’s like a modern-day Robbie Savage. You need more than that.

“If people are saying United are missing McTominay, they’re not really Man United fans. The reason he’s out injured is because he tried to kick someone and hurt himself. If that’s what people think United are, then they weren’t around for the good times.

“Every time [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer looks at what his midfield’s going to be – well, let's just say I’m just surprised he’s not gone bald already because it must paralyse his brain that there is no midfield at all at United.

Paul Parker on Scott Mctominay.

15 Feb 2020 12:28:52
Lingard runs out all over grafts way harder than McTominay but yet the same fans on here slate him but praise Mctominay.

Not a patch and never will be on Fletcher.

15 Feb 2020 12:29:26
Oh dear, someones started early 😂.

15 Feb 2020 15:52:25
Just can't see why people overate one person that runs about and calls another who in Lingard is the far harder grafter. Makes no sense.

Mctominay is bottom half player at best. Sideways and backwads. Stops potential attacks. Lost almost as much headed than he's won for 6' 4" is absolutely awful.

He doesn't create chances of which he is one of our problems and is the problem of why we don't score and create because he's not good enough.

Were shirt of quality and people want to play one of our poorer midfielders week in week out.

Matic is still far better. Fred is better of who can play similar positions.

We haven't missed Mctominay when Matic has played, only when periera has played.

People blindsighted by passion over quality.

A poor Lee Cattermole.

{Ed001's Note - he is nothing like Cattermole. You really are spouting some nonsense. This is embarrassing.}

15 Feb 2020 16:09:40
He's not much better tbf IMO. I don't see the buzz about him. He's like marmite I guess.

He runs around trying to foul people and gain plaudits from the fans by saying the right things that's because he knows what fans want to hear. Paul Parker statement couldn't be more right for me.

People sprouting names like Henderson etc. he's not even similar to him. At least henderson can pick a pass and go forward.

I really hope for the good of the team he becomes a top top player proves, me wrong and I'll hold my hands up. I just can't see it though.

I agree hard working player with limited ability but not good enough to be challenging.

15 Feb 2020 16:27:26
Judging from this thread he isn't like Marmite at all. Everyone, including the Ed by the looks of it rates McTominay bar you.

He isn't going to be world class, but not every member of the side needs to be. McTominay adds drive, tempo and impetus to our midfield and we have struggled in his absence.

Fred is improving but has not been as good as McTominay this season, and certainly not last.

Matic has had a good January. Whoop-de-do, he was terrible in before Christmas, either injured or totally not at the races. He was poor last season for three quarters of it. Let's see if he can manage more than one good month this season before we start saying he's our best midfielder.

The fact that Pogba who has been out injured for most of the season has played only 80 minutes less football in the EPL this season yet on average has made more defensive actions per game, while also creating more highlights just how poor Matic has really been.

McTominay and Rashford have carried the side this year, if they had a few more players who played with the same intensity, drive and desire as they do we would comfortably be in the top four right now.

15 Feb 2020 17:02:39
Wilbot, seriously you are embarrassing yourself.

15 Feb 2020 17:08:25
Well said Shappy!

15 Feb 2020 17:44:38
How can you embarrass yourself with an opinion? Please elaborate?

Opinion is what I think of a player so because my opinion differs doesn't mean I'm embarrassing myself.

What is embarrassing. When was at game the crowed boing and going mad that Fred's through ball to get the forwards in on goal didn't materialize the fans were going mad but Mctominay stops a potential back and passes to De Gea from the opposition D and crowd clap like it was a good thing.

If people think that Mctominay has been our best player then to me it shows were further behind than actually are.

People slating pogba but even on an off day creates 3 chances a game.

Maybe I was a bit harsh in comparing McTominay to Cattermole as obvious Mctominay is way better than he was but still not good enough if want to challenge. Maybe for bench.

{Ed001's Note - pointless this conversation. You still don't get it. Nothing to do with being harsh, it is to do with the comparison being nonsense as they are completely different types of players. You may as well compare him with Zidane. Fred is the player on United's team who plays closest in style to Cattermole. If you are going to make silly comments like that, you just make your whole point moot, as no one is going to take any notice.}

15 Feb 2020 17:45:32
DDG also carried us he's kept some scores down made vital saves but because he's made a few errors people forget the good stuff.

15 Feb 2020 18:24:16
Jordan Henderson.
Mctom at least looks like he's cares and will imporve.

15 Feb 2020 19:23:06
Darren Fletcher 2.0.

15 Feb 2020 19:32:20
Scott reminds me of Jordan Henderson and he might go on and have a career like him for us.

When i first saw Jordan i thought he might not make it but he has become a top player and i think Scott will become one too.

15 Feb 2020 19:37:33
Mctom has improved every season and as betty said above there are some that could follow his example.
Technically he is a bit short but he will improve that due to his desire to work hard. A better coach and better players around him could see him improve further. Been one of our better players this season.

15 Feb 2020 22:21:01
What's not to like about mctominay? From memory he was not a highly touted prospect and came from no where to be one of the first names on the team sheet. He works his socks off every game, unlike others in the squad and puts his body on the line every game. Not every player in the team is going to have silky skills and to compare him to lingard is embarrassing, yes lingard may run and graft every game but that's about it. His job as an attacking midfielder is to score and assist and he does neither. Mctominay is there to break up play and be an outlet for the defenders to play it out, which he does.
I would rather have mctominay over matic any day.

15 Feb 2020 23:27:33
Sorry mate but you are talking absolute bollocks.

Mctominay will never be zidane, but if you can't see how much he's been missed since he's been out you are watching the wrong game.

16 Feb 2020 00:17:27
i would rather have mctom. maybe not the best but gives his all. than that to er pogba that makes djemba djemba look like pele.

16 Feb 2020 11:31:28
Much better team with mctominay in it than without. Everyone needs to have someone they hate I guess?
