What does everyone make of the links to Andre Onana?

I don't think anyone would be shocked of DDG was to leave this summer.

But with Romero, Grant, Joel Pereira and Dean Henderson on the books do we need to go out and spend a significant amount of money and time chasing another goalkeeper when we have so many other areas that need improvement?

For the record from what I have seen of Onana he looks an excellent young goalkeeper. Just not sure he would be needed even if DDG was to leave.

stich with romero never let us down.

Shappy, I definitely think we’d need to replace DDG. There’s a lot of love for Romero on here but I don’t see how we challenge with him as no. 1. If he was good enough he’d be doing it elsewhere. I question his desire if he’s happy sat on the bench and in addition to that there’s top clubs around Europe competing for titles with average goalkeepers (Juve and Barcelona to start) . Why is nobody sniffing round him, he would be affordable.

I’d have Romero and Henderson.

give it to romero. has not let us down and would allow us to invest the money elsewhere. if he has a poor season you have the option of henderson or buying someone more established like oblak.

If the plan is to play with a higher line and press more defensively then we require a goalkeeper who isn't stuck to his goal line, otherwise with the chuckle brothers in defence teams are going to have their way with us with a simple long ball over the top.

De gea is a fantastic goalkeeper but due to our rudimentary style of play hasn't had to develop other facets of his game like ederson, ter stegen, neuer and allison have had to. Also if he wants to leave let him, its the third time he's tried to leave so we should grant his wish.

Romero is a fine back up and henderson is promising but we should be looking for the right goalkeeper to suit how were going to play. Onana might be that guy or even cilleson.

If we are honest we need a minimum of a RB, CB, CM, AM and a RW.
We could do with LB to challenge Shaw. another CB as only Lindelof and Tuanzebe should be kept with Jones, Rojo, Bailly and Smalling being shown the door. A CDM to replace Matic. A ST to replace Lukaku and a LW to replace Martial.

So that's five must haves, and a further five required to have a squad that could truly challenge for the title.

If we replace DDG with a player such as Oblak or Donnarumma then we would be looking at spending the best part of 100m. Plus it will be a difficult deal to get over the line and therefore take a long time. If we go for someone more attainable such as Onana who is a good keeper by the way they will still cost close to 50m (apparently 35m was dismissed out of hand) .

That is a big chunk of the budget and significant time chasing another player to replace DDG.

For me there are only a handful of goalkeepers in the world actually better than Romero, very few if any are available and all would cost a huge fee.

My point is, would you be happy if the club spent half the summer and 100m on Oblak but then only had time/ money to bring in a RB, CB and CM.

Or would you rather we had Romero as first choice next season (he has never let us down) and we managed to sign a RB, CB, CM, AM and RW?

Personally I would prefer we had Romero as No.1 and we brought in the players this side needs rather than chasing an expensive DDG replacement who will ultimately not be as good as the player he is replacing and would likely mean we can't improve the squad in other areas.

I'm sorry, I don't see him as a number 1 at a club looking to challenge for a title.

So he should be ok here, then 😁.

Stevie, I would put Romero above keeper in the EPL bar DDG, Ederson and Allison. I would say he is on par with Kepa and Lloris.

He isn't quite in that top tier of goalkeepers at present but he is in that next tier down.

DDG, Allison, Ederson, Ter Stegen, Oblak and Neuer (just about but on the decline) are all top level.

Kepa, Navas, Courtois, Lloris, Handanovic, Donnarumma (although he has the potential to climb into that top bracket) are all in that second tier. For me Romero is at this level, he has just been unfortunate to have been at a club with on of the top tier players for the past few seasons.

If we sell DDG who on or near his level will be available? Oblak maybe, but at a huge price. Most of that second group would coast a huge amount as well and all are at a similar level to Romero. So I see no point chasing those type of players.

We also have the young English goalkeeper with the most potential in Dean Henderson. I would be happy to loan Henderson out to Sheffield United for next season, Have Romero as No.1 with Grant and J. Pereira as back up. Then depending on how Henderson performs in the EPL with Sheffield United bring him back the following summer to challenge Romero or if need be look to bring in someone else then.

As you say we won't be challenging for the league next year, so do we need a top tier keeper any way?

This again is down to strategy which should be clear from the manager. What sort of goalkeeper do you want Mr Solskjaer? If you look at City and Liverpool the manager knows what they want, do we? That should determine who is in goals next season. The best goalkeeper I have seen and I go back to Banks and Stepney, was Schmeichel. He couldn’t pass the ball like a midfielder but he commanded the defence, looked unbeatable one on one. That was back then, now more thought goes into it. DDG is a great shot stopper but doesn’t command his area or defence, his passing wouldn’t do for City but what is it that our Manager wants?

Simple fact is asking, how does the manager want to play? What does he expect of his goalkeeper and promote/ buy from there. The worrying thing? Does he know?

18 May 2019 17:38:16
Yeah, I think he's just winging it 🙄.

18 May 2019 18:53:01
Red Man - just maybe Ole does know what he wants and who he wants but he doesn't feel it necessary to contact you directly to discuss it. He might have made it clear to all concerned and is moving forward with his plans but then that wouldn't suit either yours or the press's agenda so is definitely not true. No doubt if he doesn't win the treble next year you will be telling us how right you were.
Just face facts you can't change things so it's no good moaning about everything that's in the press or is written on here so go along with the ride as decisions will be made regardless of your constant moaning.
Failing that write to Ole demanding he consults you before he makes any decision .

Keanooh

Then like every season for 51 years I will watch our managers make decisions right or wrong. When he finishes 7th I will be as frustrated as you

The proof is in the season ahead and I have a feeling we will be stuffed but hey what do I know.
