Bruno Fernandes has scored 13 penalties with us. 13. In 1.5 seasons.
It's such an unexpected number.
Rooney in all his career has 20.
RVN has 15, cantona 14.
I think bruno takes the record and becomes our highest penalty scorer next season.

Just a sign of the game now Rohan. Slight contact and it’s a pen. Var is only going to bring more and more.

I don't know the stats. Q shappy straight on to Google.
But I'd have the impression that since var there have been lots more penalties. Slow motion is destroying decision making imo. It distorts the reality of most challenges.
I've seen more red card due to shoe motion also . It often makes tackles look worse.
Var should be judged in real time. Again it's only my opinion. See it as the refs see it but with the agave if all angles but only in real time.

{Ed001's Note - it is also the way that referees are instructed by FIFA to use it. Slow motion is not meant to be used, they are meant to watch stuff at real speed to make up their mind.}

I don’t like it. In fact I am a little embarrassed by how many penalties we get and have relied on sometimes. Ok we have fast wide players which is the main catalyst as these types of player will always go down at the drop of a hat, and you only need to look at the ball to concede a penalty these days.

Ken no point googling those stats. We've had such a short amount of time using VAR that you can't actually draw any comparisons yet.

I'm 100% sure there have been more penalties awarded since the introduction of VAR. How many of those have been decisions not given that have been overturned, or decisions that maybe wouldn't have been give pre-VAR is too difficult to work out.

Have officials changed how they officiate games? Are they giving decisions they maybe wouldn't have before and waiting for VAR to say they go that wrong, or are they not giving decisions they would have and waiting for VAR to correct them?

I think which way a Ref might go with that is situational and dependent on the individual Ref. There is no objective way to measure that.

While football officials are learning how best to integrate and use VAR, how it's currently used is different to how it was initially used, and how it gets used in a few seasons time will be different again. Football is learning and adapting to this new technology and attempting to iron out the issues as they come up.

For the most part under the current rules I find it hard to disagree with most of the penalty decisions last season. Some I might feel were a little soft, but there was still a foul. I can't remember any off the top of my head where a stonewall penalty wasn't given or a glaringly obvious mistake was made in giving a penalty.

For me the biggest issues around VAR so far has been the inconsistent use of it for offsides. The five minute reviews over a marginal offside that might not have even been going anywhere. Whether a player is offside if his shirt sleeve is beyond the last man etc.

I think there are situations where the rules need to be changed to accommodate the use of VAR for the benefit of allowing a game to flow. Like changing the offside rule to there needing to be daylight between the players.

Maybe bring in a time limit on the amount of time they have to review an offside decision. If you can't conclusively prove offside in 30 seconds then benefit goes to the attacking team. As it is a linesman is supposed to give advantage to the attacking team if they aren't 100% sure.

I think long term VAR will benefit football, it's just going to take some time working out how to make the most of it and not disrupt the flow of the game too much.

It used to be out of the ordinary to get a penalty. You’d see that a side had been awarded one and tune in to MOTD that night to see the incident. Now it’s more a surprise if a game doesn’t have one. It’s the handball rules that need to be looked at and players need to be penalised for simulation for. They’ve started that but it’s not far enough.

15 min sin bin for simulation if you get sin binned 5 times you get a 3 game ban.

Would love to see an orange card introduced to sin bin players. Two yellows = Ornage, three yellows = Red. Still give the Ref to give a straight orange or red if he deems fit. I sometimes think some 2nd yellows do not warrant a sending off.

VAR removes the joy of football, when a goal is scored you are looking at whether you can celebrate or have to wait 2 minutes whilst they look at every angle. Said before if it takes more than 30 seconds to a minute it isn’t clear and obvious. If they are given a set time, how long before the TV companies go to an advert break whilst they are doing it?

01 Aug 2021 15:59:25
Agree with that red, the joy is being leached out of the game.

Worst thing now is that the officiating is now reliant on it, so tough to see how they could ever go back. If VAR turned off the errors from refs would be huge.
