I like Dave, he’s a top keeper, possible the best in the world right now. But if Madrid want to break the transfer world record for him would we really say no? I think Romero is excellent and has never let us down, if we are going to get completely silly money that allows us to accelerate the rebuild then why not?

It may be a contentious view but GKs don’t make things happen, they stop things happening. Yes you clearly need a top class keeper (as the Scousers know) but I think the need for the best in the world is not necessarily the same as an outfield player. Am I right, or have I had too much wine 🍷?

I have little faith in our transfer prowess, so I'd stick with DDG no matter what they offer for him, (so long as we haven't promised David anything as I don't agree with breaking promises) .

We'd probably spend £75m on Joe Hart to replace him!

I think Romero would be fantastic as a replacement as you say never let us down. Would be sad to lose DDG as he is the worlds best but if it funded a position or two then it is worth thinking about.

Keeping Dave is imperative if we want to get back to the top. But if he is to leave I would be very happy to give Romero a chance in the position. I’ll admit when he signed I was not a fan but he has rarely let us down and he is a consummate professional. Both Jose and lvg have nothing but good words to say about him and his performances when called upon have been very good. I feel really sorry for him that he happens to be behind the best keeper in the world and if he wanted to leave I would be quite upset about it. But I would grant it as he deserves to be playing week in week out.

I've always said ddg is the best shot stopper around. But is he the best at commanding his area? Is he the best at collecting crosses (remember Leicester goal in the last minute? Ball came 40 yds and ddg didn't come out to punch) .
I would definitely cash in and ask them to give us isco and bale as part of the deal. Allisson and Oblak are excellent replacements and Romero has never let us down.

I don’t think selling our best player is a good strategy for success. Unless he forces a move, we should do everything in our power to keep him. Romeo is a good player, but we have the best keeper in the world in De Gea.

28 May 2018 18:08:55
You make a good point AAA. De Gea perhaps doesn’t command his box as well as big Pete or van der sar did. Allisson and Oblak are fantastic keepers and would not be too upset if they were replacements for Dave. But I hope we keep hold of him because he is the best around.

Let’s not kid ourselves, DDG is the best in the world right now, no question for me. I would not say anything negative about him and I don’t think anyone can compare.

My wider point was how we could rebuild. Liverpool sold Suarez, and then Coutnho and got better. They weren’t the best in the world but at the time they were their best players. It’s something we shouldn’t dismiss.

My concern about Romero is that he looks to have a touch of the Karius about him. He's done perfectly well against the fodder and he is a good shot stopper, but I worry about him. Just call it a 'rotund gut' feeling he will cost us important points if he is our main man and it'll cause panic at the back and as soon as he has a clanger it will be chaos. It'll be major drama dogging everything (bit like when SAF left and Moyes coming in) .

I agree DDG is weak in certain parts of his game, but he is the worlds best at the vital parts imo. Oblak would be a fine replacement, but we'd either pay double what he is worth or not go for him imo. It's Woody as well I am very dubious about and I dread a repeat of the post-Schmeichel years!

If we were sorted in other areas I'd also be less worried, but GK is the one spot we don't have any worries about currently - it's also a get-out-of-jail free card if we start poorly next season, I can already see the excuses piling in now to explain a horrible game, capped by a goalkeeping error - we would be competing with XYZ if we hadn't lost DDG!

28 May 2018 18:22:41
I see no viable reason to sell DDG unless we have promised him a move home and let’s be honest, he’s more than earned his corn for us and is a class act so can’t fault him if does want to play for the most successful club in the world which happens to be in his home city.

Romero is a great number 2, but I feel far more comfortable with Dave than him in goal!

28 May 2018 19:03:44
Have to disagree, Tony. Teams very rarely win the big ones without a top keeper. I wouldn't be swapping him for anyone else.

28 May 2018 19:28:34
I agree Stevie but I think Romero is a top keeper.

28 May 2018 23:11:39
Just looking at the results if only i had placed a bet with that top 6 prediction lol.

28 May 2018 23:13:41
Agreed park. that's the only flaw to his game.
