I was just reading Juan Mata's recent interview in Spain. He talks about how footballers have become detached from the fans and now live in a bubble. He also mentions how younger players think they are rock stars.

Always said it. A class act, on and off the pitch. Why do Continental players always seem so much more cultured and intelligent than ours?

FZZ - I immediately thought of Depay when has said that. He also talked about having to take them aside "and have a word".

The book Soccernomics detailed how in England football players and managers were historically drawn from blue collar areas. Middle class footballer, kids who had gone on to do A levels etc., were considered too soft and treated with ridicule. On the continent it was much mor mixed. I remember being amazed when the late great Johann Cruyff came on the scene speaking better English, more coherently, than any of the local players. It was a new phenomenon - the educated player. This reality is borne out by the scarcity of great English managers.
