All the talk of Rashford, not taking a thing away from him here as he has exceeded all expectations.

Lingard may never be a world class player but other than one or two games, he hasn't put a foot wrong for me. Maybe not the best finisher. He was always going to be a late bloomer but he has stepped up. Last season you would have thought he would be sold having not really made a mark in any of his loan spells. But in Rashford, Lingard and even Varela we have seen a real desire to perform.

Would anybody have thought last season that any of them would be holding their own in the premier league? Varela didn't impress at Madrid B, Lingard at numerous loans and Rashford a raw youth.

I love Lingard's attitude, he was first one in to defend Rashford when it kicked off ysterday.

LVG might be on to something when he says that he sees lingard as a midfielder. I tend to agree as he does not have the pace or trickery of a winger and can"t see him making that position his at United.

I like Lingard's attitude and work rate, but I'm not sure he has a set of clear attributes that mark him out as a future star in any position. Not trying to knock the lad because he has really stepped up under difficult circumstances, but can't see him as anything more than a squad player if we bring in quality attacking and midfield players.

Rashford has started really well, but a lot will depend on the incoming manager. As for Varela, I think van Gaal has hung him out to dry after the Liverpool game by subbing him at halftime and dropping him out of the squad for the next game. If Valencia and Darmain stay fit, I'm not sure he'll get much of a look in.

Danny Varela is a pretty poor defender. He does attack well and puts in a good ball as his crossing technique is good. I'm not sure he is good enough or rather will ever be good enough or physically strong enough to play in the epl. He can have a great career elsewhere but I don't think he will cut it in the UK.
As for hanging him it to dry. I'm not so sure that was true. He read woeful against Liverpool and after that display didn't warrant a place in the squad.

He is a young defender, who could easily improve with the right coaching. He was terrible against Liverpool largely due to the manager's decision to play Mata on the right. That left him completely isolated and exposed to one-on-ones, and was the main reason for their goal. He was hung out to dry because it's unfair to expect any defender (in a 4-5-1) to cope without defensive cover from their winger. So what we have with Varela is a young player, who was doing a decent job for a few weeks, put in a difficult position by his manager's tactics, and then used as a scapegoat for the obvious tactical failing. Let's not forget that this is exactly what happened to Darmain against Arsenal earlier in the season, and he was dropped too.

Time will tell Danny. I just don't see it in him.
