Why is it such a surprise to you that he's been made club captain? Leads by example, understands the values of the club, never causes any problems off the pitch or complains if he's not in the team and he's an experienced head who can guide the younger players. Just because he's club captain doesn't mean he will be in the starting 11 every game so I'm not sure why people are getting in a hissy fit over this decision.

Ashley is a truly inspirational figure, providing hope to mediocre players everywhere that no matter how poor a player you are, unsuited to a berth in a top club's first 11, there is still a chance that one day you could captain Man Utd.
