Sentiments aside, Shaw had an awful game. Darmian did better in 15 minutes than shaw did in 75 minutes on the left flank. That tells us a lot. Tuanzebe also played match better when shaw was taken off. It is harsh to judge a player by 1 preseason game, but has it really been only one game? Pity Demetri Mitchel wasn't given a run.

Shaw still has such potential, however, he is a player who needs to be let loose in a more attacking team. Those games at the start of his second season before his injury he was our best player and key offensive threat. The talents there, but Mourinho isn't the man to get it out of him. To get into Mourinho's team he has to play Mourinho's way, which for Shaw is like playing with the handbrake on. He is better going forward than he is defending. Our set up stops him doing what he's best at and makes him focus on what he's worst at. He probably needs to move on sadly, I expect him to kick in and play well wherever he goes.

I don't think Mitchell would benefit much from Mourinho's tactics either. Being a former winger and only playing full back for the last few years he is a more offensive full back than Jose would like. He would probably suffer the same fate as Shaw, where he would be made to do the things he worst at and restricted from doing what he's best at.

You say Shaw is better going forward but his delivery into the box is terrible, I think he has only ever made 4 or 5 assists, never scored for United either, that is not down to Mourinho. Most of the time the best he offers is just that he is another body for the opposition to mark.

Shappy what makes you think shaw has potential to be top class. Are you bading that in the 1 good seadon he had at Southampton when he was 17? He has not played 10 consecutive games for 4 years and not made 1 tip class performance for 3 seasons so what are you basing your judgement on?
Lots of teenagers don't follow through. A lot more don't than do but essential shaw has done nothing in 4 years to suggest he will be a top player but has done plenty to suggest he won't be.

So Shappy, you are basing his sky reaching talents on 10 games?

I said Shaw has potential, it's still there, his pace, control and ability to beat players is still there. Unfortunately there has been no development in his game over the last few years, years in which he has had an injury that would have ended his career 25 years ago. A change in managers, and no consistency in selection. I'm not saying kits everyone's fault but his own, he has to take a lot of the blame for not keeping himself in shape, for not focusing enough on his profession and for clearly rubbing Mourinho up the wrong way.

However, there are circumstances that haven't helped him. If the penny can drop and he has the support and encouragement he needs there is no reason why he can't start to fulfill that potential.

Will the penny drop? Maybe. Will he be given the support and encouragement from those inside the club? Maybe, although I would say it's unlikely to come from Mourinho.

I doubt he will live up to that potential, but I don't think the club or the fans should turn their backs on a young player who has been unfortunate as well as a little foolish so quickly.

I have said many times on here that the positions we need to sort out above all others in the full back positions. I think someone should come in at LB to challenge Shaw. There is nothing wrong with having two good players for one position. If Shaw raises to the challenge then great, if not then then he can leave and we can say we gave him every chance.

Shappy, yesterday he was played as a wing back. I don't know how much more of an offensive set up can am attacking LB want. He was making runs only to misplace passes, mis-control or simply pass back. When Darmian outshines you in 15 minutes at left back then I am sorry, you aren't good enough. It is for this reason I asked about Demetri, just like mou kept faiith with former wingers last season in young and valencia.

Ken, couldn't agree more. I've been saying for two seasons that Shaw is a terrible player. I just do not see the love in people have for him. His defensive positioning is non existent. His attacking qualities are not great as his ball control is terrible. We need to get rid of him sooner rather than later. I cannot stand the guy.

Shaw was incredible before he broke his leg and that was under the woeful LVG. There is magic there, just wrong manager to bring it out in him.

Shaw is at fault as well, but if he is prone to weight/ attitude issues, then why drop him after being one of the best players on the pitch, several times last season?

Surely a manager should be able to hone the talent and work on the issues, not stifle the talent and encourage the issues?!

26 Jul 2018 16:25:08
Never once was he the best player on a pitch last season or in any of the 4 seasons he has been here beast. Bang average. Never played 10 consecutive games. Bowles signing and if he was forgein he would be getting lashed on here. Lazy and useless i'd say.

Sometimes we see things differently Ken.

Shaw is terrible. If he wasn’t English we’d not care.
