Question to all posters -
If at the beginning of the season, i asked which would you rather
1. Getting in to CL finishing 2nd-4th OR
2. Getting in to CL via winning the Europa trophy but finishing 5th - which would you have picked?

Number 2 this season. But next year we need to push on in the league. Even if it's at the expense of cups. Also let's not assume we have won Europa, it's not going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination.

You forgot to add the League Cup in to option 2.
I was having this conversation with a Leeds fan over weekend.
IF we win the Europa League, we've won two "major" trophies and qualified for the Champions League.
If that was the offer at the start of the season, would anyone have turned it down? Surely not.

The real question is how many people expected us to finish 6th in the league, because i don't remember anyone even suggesting we might finish below top 4.

Or the League cup.
We didn't and haven't looked interested in the Europa Cup either if we are being completely honest. Played absolutely terrible most games.
Only now is it being turned into something. Floundering like desperate politicians.

In the beginning obviously nobody anticipated we will come to this situation. It just evolved. For me we didn't do that badly but definitely can be much better. Whatever the reasons or excuses we are where we are.
As to the Europa yes I thought we could have qualified strongly in top 4 but since we didn't do that well, the back door is better than no door. Hence we really need to push this through and focus.
Perhaps Jose has miscalculated the top 4 and put best forward to try to beat Arsenal and Swansea. But note well that we have a few softies who just opted out through injury list. There are many things we do not know happening in the team but I am sure Jose is slowly weeding out those who are wagon hoppers but not put in effort.
I would seriously only gauge Jose in the next season. But for now, I think we have done ok. I am hoping we win the Europa whatever way it is - clean or dirty.
Nobody remembers 2nd and all bad things will be forgotten through winning.

I would of said that we should try to win every cup we are competing in, Europa included. Sadly, this current squad isn't strong enough to compete for all cup competitions. If we can't win the league then the Europa and League cup will have to do. Next season we must at least challenge for the title and knockout stages in the CL. I think we're 4 signings from doing so.

I want to make sure that this is an IF we win situation. i am not assuming that we have won the europa cup yet.
What i wanted to know is at the start of the season, which would you all rather out of the 2 options.
CL entry due to top 4 finish
or
CL entry due to winning the euro cup
i had us down as winning the league BUT if i was asked that at the start of this seaon i would have chosen entry to the CL via winning a trophy (euro cup)

Asked at the start of the season the majority of people would have said, "who cares about the Europa League, the quicker we are out of it the better. Also we want to qualify for the CL like all the best teams do, not via some filthy back door".
But now is a different matter of course, people have short memories and are quick to excuse/ hide from failure. Not sure why as we aren't playing or managing the team, we can't affect change so we are not to blame for the failure.

I don't think we do have short memories of course everyone of us wanted to be challenging for the title but that's not the case we are simply making the best out of a bad situation.

But you see Dave you are agreeing it is a 'bad situation'. A lot of people on here see this as progress and think Jose is doing a good job! I don't think you are who I am addressing the "short memories" comment to, it's those that seem to think finishing 5th/ 6th and maybe winning a micky mouse cup is a great sign of progress.

Beast, do you think city, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham would prefer to finish 2nd, 3rd or 4th, OR win the League Cup and the Europa League, meaning qualification? Nobody wanted this scenario at the start of the season, why would any fan of any team? But here we are. So which do you choose from here. Please don't tell me 4th as in 25 years nobody says "oh remember that season we finished 4th".

Beast u have completely missed what i'm Asking!
Given the choice, i'd rather win europa and get in the CL than finish 2nd with no trophy and get in CL.
I suppose beast until we win the world cup ul always be disapointed.
