Interesting debate about goalkeepers and as people say, it's all about opinions. Schmeichel is the best GK I have seen, there was a period when he was the best in the world for several years. People forget he only cost £500K which even then was a low amount. I rate him as the best signing SAF made. The other obvious one is Eric but he didn't hang around for that long.

DDG could go on to emulate him but it is far too soon to compare them. He's still behind Schmeichs and VDS for me.

Agree7 Disagree7

Totally agree, mate.

VDS was a complete keeper, and DDG is the best shot-stopper I've seen. Amazing reflexes.

But Big Pete had that psychological advantage. You knew, one on one, that strikers didn't fancy their chances, and you ended up surprised when they actually did beat him.

Played up for the cameras, like Danny alluded to, but he'd be the first name on my team sheet every time.

maybe shilton.

Smichael all day long, and you knew he was loyal.

Again I'm in complete agreement. The funny thing is all 3 of them make great saves, big saves, point gaining saves and league and cup winning saves, I can assure the moaning minnies that big pete and VDS made just a many and possibly more key saves than ddg has. There are very few championship winning sides that don't have the best keeper or at least a keeper that's performing at the very top of their game. Even the year Blackburn won the epl tim flowers was in inspired form.
All 3 are great keepers and if ddg stays another few years all 3 would be regarded as club legends IMO.

Schmeichel is my favourite goalie ever but it has to be said
at De Gea's current age, Schmeichel was still playing in Denmark where De Gea has had a couple of seasons in La Liga and is in his 5th season with United . He's ahead of where Schmeichel was at 25 and who knows how good he will eventually end up being.

Pete's throws were immense. I miss those lightening counter attacks.

I loved the Great Dane as much as anyone and he was a force to be reckoned with but this lad De Gea for me is something else. It is difficult to compare players from different eras but i cannot remember the last time I watched a game and didn't think to myself 'wow how did David save that'.

Peter was intimidating I agree but De Gea is so agile and his reflexes are unmatched. He has also become more vocal and this season aside, he has had derisory defensive cover beside him. The last two campaigns and this current one he has completely took his game to a new level, even above that of Neuer's in my opinion. Does anyone know how many times Schmeichel got player of the year for us?

Agreed centre back, centre forward and winger more urgent.

I feel like we may all be forgetting Massimo Taibi here folks! .

Were lucky to have had 3 of the best keepers the world has seen. To say who is or was the best is hard. As it stands at the moment big Pete takes it for me but for me Dave the save is a better keeper than both of them at the age of 25 and will get better. I can tell you Madrid would not of got beat 4-0 at the weekend if he had been in the nets, he would of definitely of saved the 1st two. Long my he say at Utd.

I think it says an awful lot about the ability of DDG that we are even having this discussion. If someone had told me in '99 that we would ever have a keeper that could be as good as Schmeichel I wouldn't have believed them, it is great that we then got VDS and now DDG who are pushing him close. If DDG stays with us for the length of this contract I think he will surpass Schmeichel, fingers crossed that is what happens.
