Few articles discussing Rakitic to City then Guillem Balagué said that city don't have a solid interest after all BUT the player was offered to them and would be available.

Wouldn't he be a potential target for the passing midfielder role we all want filled?

Seems odd his name hasn't come up in relation to United when pretty much everyone else's had. Would be a very handy addition I reckon.

RobbieWood

1.) 10 Jan 2017 07:24:34
Who would you drop: Pogba or Herrara? I think we need to replace Carrick as a priority (due to age not performance) . Although Herrara can deputise there, I fear he would be found out (in the deeper role) against elite opposition.

As much as I like Rakitic, I don't think he is what we need.

2.) 10 Jan 2017 07:29:42
We will probably find out in the summer just how much Jose trusts herrera in that position.

Does he think he is the man for the job long term or is he the best man for the moment?

3.) 10 Jan 2017 14:29:48
Herrera is doing well in his current role an him an pogba is working. Carrick is the priority

As for Ballague if he told me the sky was blue i'd go to the window for a second opinion.

Mourinho set to offload the players that are 'against him' in January.

ManUtd to be offered Fabregas for around $20 mill as they need creativity and Mourinho wants rid asap.

RobbieWood

1.) 09 Nov 2015 08:08:06
Why help them out and buy a troublemaker.

2.) 09 Nov 2015 09:12:37
We aren't especially lacking creativity. We are playing the wrong kind of football.

Possession football is inherently defensive, concentrating on keeping the ball, since the opposition can't score if they don't have the ball.

Keeping possession means not taking as many risks, whereas taking more risks not only gives the ball away more often, but also creates more chances, and often more really good chances.

Arsenal have been showing for years that possession football can get you near the top, but not quite there in this league.

Guardiolas Barcelona team was a freak. They had exactly the right set of worldclass players to make it work. Even the current Barcelona and Bayern teams don't try to replicate that, instead focussing on knowing when to switch between pure possession and a more attacking style.

We need LVG to stop worrying about possession so much and let the players take more risks in the final third.

3.) 09 Nov 2015 11:01:27
Fully agree with Thorne but also to add we do need some more pace with end quality.

4.) 09 Nov 2015 11:06:56
Thorne,

The 'wrong' kind or the kind of football you don't like?

5.) 09 Nov 2015 12:20:32
If I was made to choose I'd rather see Herrera play for us than Fabregas also I can't see either playing second fiddle to the other for to long.

6.) 09 Nov 2015 12:53:29
The only player that I would pick from Chelsea would be Hazard. He would add a bit of pep down the wings - he will leave, but for Spain I think.

7.) 09 Nov 2015 12:58:52
There are no risks in the final third unless the team are behaving in a reckless manner .

8.) 09 Nov 2015 14:06:33
Fresh! Really? I would happily take Hazard, Willian, Zouma and Azpilicueta.

9.) 09 Nov 2015 18:10:10
GDS2 - Both.

Arsenal have proved again and again that pure possession football won't work in this country, not if you want to actually win the league.

And yes, it is also the total opposite to the style of football which made me fall in love with Utd around 25 years ago, and which brought us so much silverware.

Now, times change, I know. If we could transplant our best team from, say, the 90's to the present day, I doubt they would be half as successfull. Possession has become more important. However, it is not all important.

When I watch us play now, it looks like the players are afraid of giving the ball away. They don't try playing those through balls and crosses which are not even 50-50, but which could create really good chances if they work.

Possession should be a way of running down the clock or taking the sting out of the game for a while when the other team are building momentum. It shouldn't be the entirety of our game plan.

10.) 09 Nov 2015 18:15:41
I think it might be easier just to offload Mourinho rather than offload the players who are against him.

11.) 10 Nov 2015 15:05:46
Thorne: "Now, times change, I know. If we could transplant our best team from, say, the 90's to the present day, I doubt they would be half as successfull. Possession has become more important. However, it is not all important. "

Deluded and insulting to the teams of the 90's, who would quite frankly romp this league year on year! You seriously telling me that the team of 99 would not have won the league last year! Get real.

What a ridiculous comment!

12.) 10 Nov 2015 16:44:53
No BadRedDevil, I don't think they would.

The team of 99 was brilliant, and it isn't their quality that I think would be an issue, it is the style of play.

Football has evolved. I would suggest that if you took any great team of the past and moved them 15-20 years forwards or backwards in time they would struggle.

Expect LVG to bring in Huntelaar as a backup striking option before the start of the season.

RobbieWood

1.) 21 Jul 2015 10:37:34
You know what Robbie.you may have a good shout there !!!!.LVG told Sky Sports United are in talks with a striker but not anybody that the media has reported on so far. he's Dutch and coming to the end of a lustrious career playing at the top. worth a punt on this rumour.

2.) 21 Jul 2015 10:46:34
He's dutch so he must be a target!

3.) 21 Jul 2015 11:04:14
Tremendous poacher, doubt it, but could well be.

4.) 21 Jul 2015 13:59:21
Nothing like sitting on the fence on that remark Fresh lol. its like saying the pub wasn't packed but it was still chocca ha ha.

Disappointing game today, I really thought we would beat spurs but we looked a bit toothless and once the 2nd goal went in we didn't really threaten much at all.

I wonder whether what Hazard said re Mourinho carries real weight, something like he drills the defence but just let's the attackers do what they like/ comes naturally etc. i'm sure obviously it can't be that black and white but it does look to me like our undoubtedly talented forward players don't seem to link and interact effectively at times. Maybe there should be more focus on attacking drills and movement etc?

Just musing on it and I think today was maybe a extreme example but we should be creating more.

I thought Eriksen was excellent today and Ali was a dirty little t@#t as usual.

RobbieWood

1.) 01 Feb 2018 10:20:06
Dele Alli is a little dirty ****. Gets away with it all the time, commentators barely mention his dirty antics. Would love to see him get battered by a rough challenge some of these days.

11 Jan 2018 03:58:33
Couple of questions if I may;

As things stand now are we generally happy we got Lukaku rather than Morata (as we were apparently linked with both) . Both have flattered to deceive a bit for me but I think/ hope overall Lukaku was probably the better option.

Secondly, and i'm aware this is probably wishful thinking but I fancy Man Utd for the Champions league this year.
Mourinho knows how to get it done in European competition and will have no problems being 'pragmatic' in the knockout stages.

One of Madrid and PSG will go next phase (looks like Madrid on form) and PSG have previous for bottling it.

Everyone is lauding city and rightly so atm but they are playing for 4 trophies atm and a slip in form and a few injuries I feel has to happen.

Few other usual suspects around but not the great Barcelona team of the past etc etc. I dunno, just have a feeling. Mourinho probably knows the leage is done so could focus on it as he did last yr with the Europa.

So to summarise. we are definitely going to win the Champions League! (or go out to Sevilla on away goals. )

Laters.

2.) Nope.

02 Jan 2018 20:43:27
Hi Ed's, lot of praise floating around for Sergej Milinković-Savić atm and talk that he would be ideal for man utd.
Do you think there is a possibility of a bid in January and if so would Lazio consider selling him now?

RobbieWood

{Ed002's Note - I cannot answer questions about timing of bids and transfers.}

02 Jun 2017 07:37:58
Who'd you take.

Bale $70mill GBP

Ronaldo $70mill GBP

Neymar $70mill GBP.

RobbieWood

1.) 02 Jun 2017 08:05:06
Bale for me.

2.) 02 Jun 2017 08:15:26
At that price in dollars just take all 3. We can afford it.

3.) 02 Jun 2017 08:18:15
Why are we paying in dollars?

{Ed001's Note - for tax purposes, you know those Spanish clubs are not keen on paying tax and will come up with any loophole to avoid it, legal or otherwise....}

4.) 02 Jun 2017 08:38:49
Neymar of course, ronaldo is old and bale is always injured.

5.) 02 Jun 2017 08:56:05
Out of that list Naymar aaaaaall day long.

Ronaldo is past his best. Bale isn't a crock.

6.) 02 Jun 2017 09:59:08
Heard it all now. "Ronaldo past his best". the player who has just created record after record after record this season. The player who has almost single handedly taken Real to the final of the UCL. Must be past his best.

7.) 02 Jun 2017 10:29:33
Shan - Records are broken typically because of the work done leading up to them, especially all time scoring records. Rooney just broke England and Utd's scoring records, is he still in his prime?

Neymar for me all day long.

8.) 02 Jun 2017 12:43:53
Maybe controversial but I wouldn't want Neymar, don't see the hype.

9.) 02 Jun 2017 15:23:51
Bale 1 neymar 2 Ronaldo 3.

10.) 02 Jun 2017 16:00:34
Neymar any day.

11.) 03 Jun 2017 14:13:47
Difference is Ronnie is still banging in hatrick after hatrick for Real. He's a monster and a legend and I'd love him back!

17 May 2017 05:52:16
Quick question, how is everyone so sure that James is a whinger and a troublemaker?
I have seen lots of comments to that effect on here but have nothing to reference why.
I heard he wants to move away to prove himself and play regular football which i respect.
I see he looks potentially a little lightweight for the prem but the guy clearly has great attributes, was a star at the world cup and every time he seems to get a chance at Madrid he scores and plays well so what's the beef?
Genuine question as everyone seems in the know about it.

RobbieWood

1.) 17 May 2017 07:26:13
LVG was a star at the last world cup.

2.) 17 May 2017 08:52:24
Ed002 has said many within the game consider him a flake, and he's normally pretty on the money. He is nowhere near consistent enough and obviously there must be several very good reasons why Real Madrid would have been happy to sell him for the past couple of years.

3.) 17 May 2017 09:16:51
Shappy I agree that Real Madrid want to sell him but I believe because he doesn't fit into their system ATM and he's not too big a star for Real Madrid to build a team around.

But I assure you that if they were desperate, they would have accepted several offers or tried to negotiate and cut on their losses.

4.) 17 May 2017 09:49:38
Real have been touting him for two years and no one has been stupid enough to buy him and especially for €70m. Step in United and Woodward who will pay silly money for compketely overpriced players. The fact guadiolla said he will do well tells us that the opposite is true, if he believed that he will be putting an offer for him.
Rodriguez will be a monumental cockup if we bought him and will show us why our club are going nowhere at present.

{Ed004's Note - I agree that 70 million is way to too steep however if we could be bought for a reasonable price and is a Mata replacement it could be a very good move. He's an upgrade on probably all our current attacking options. I'm just worried it would result in no Griezmann signing}

5.) 17 May 2017 10:36:53
Rodriguez MAY be an upgrade to what Utd currently have but he is so one footed it is embarrassing. I do not understand why any footballer does not spend time during or after training sessions to develop their weaker foot.

Rodriguez never uses his right foot. Developing a player's weaker foot is an easy job for any coach.

Wouldn't be worth the money imo.

6.) 17 May 2017 11:10:08
Robben?

7.) 17 May 2017 12:01:05
5hbombs if only Messi had had a coach that could have developed his right foot he would have been decent.

8.) 17 May 2017 12:17:42
To be fair ken, Messi uses his right foot quite a lot too and can finish equally well with both feet.

9.) 17 May 2017 12:32:10
Ed004
Where do you see pogba playing if he's bought?

{Ed004's Note - Depends on who we are playing. I'm expecting us to play 4231 mostly at home games next season and Pogba has shown he is good enough and capable of running the midfield from deep against the majority of sides we face. However, when we are away from home or facing top opposition (City etc) at home we will probably play a 433 with Herrera coming in to partner Pogba and add more energy and defensive covering. James would then be competing for a wide spot (where he has played before)}

10.) 17 May 2017 13:04:23
Redfaith he has s cored 3 right footed goals in last 3 seasons. And went through 7 games so far this season without the ball touching his right foot once.
I will concede he is pretty tasty on his left side all the same👏.

11.) 17 May 2017 13:23:59
Ken my point isn't that he uses his right foot regularly. It is that he has a sublime right footed finish in him as well when he needs to.

12.) 18 May 2017 05:32:19
So just to be clear in relation to my initial question. He's a flake and a waster only because the gospel according to ED002 says so? And he's a bit one footed despite the fact that its a pretty decent foot?

I agree with ED 004, not for 70 mill but for 50 mill why not if we can afford him.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know about a flake, as I am not even sure what one is, other than something you get in a 99, but I do know a number of coaches who have worked with him and have criticised his lack of workrate.}

That's exactly where I went with this GDS2 I saw the MNOur interview afterwards where he said Herrera said that because he tells the players every game is the most important.
Concerned Ander was screwing up his mind games before the derby by giving it a bit of a war cry. Seems a shame as I can see what both are trying to achieve but communication has to be better of course to provide an allied front. Surely this is something that can be reconciled.

There are a lot of points here I absolutely agree with but you have to give Pep a season surely?
He came to England to test himself so let him do that before getting too carried away, they had some start and he has an amazing record that does deserve respect.

He's here to prove himself so let's see what he can do after a year or 2 for mine. His ageing defence needed addressing but that is also up to his ex Barcelona mates who run the club to have addressed with their unlimited cash.

I'm willing to bet that all the new top managers we have will experience dips and 'crisis' this season - got know Mourinho got smashed early doors.

Just saying it shouldn't be one rule for one and another for another - give him his window in the summer and see where the land lies.

I think the point here is that the league doesn't lie. at the end of the season. It's what happens between now and then we should be concerned about.

If we want flair and excitement go for Sarri from
Napoli but the job may be too colossal for him as with a lot of managers. If you just want success the best man is currently in charge.
While Pep is at city Mourinho is the best chance we have to challenge them. It may not be pretty but he’s done it before and the magnitude of Man Utd doesn’t phase him as much as it would a less experienced manager.

Completely agree, he's been ace and I really think given time he will figure out a way to catch and pass Pep as he did in Spain. The press love to take pops at him so he has learned to thrive on the 'us against the world' attitude because frankly he doesn't have much choice.
