Discussions 're our club in the transfer market and the job Woodward is doing.
We sold Fletcher to west ham for a million quid few months back and West ham have just sold him to Middlesbrough, a championship side, for £6.5m and he hardly played for West Ham.
Do people still think Woodward is the man for the job when it comes to football transfers?

Fletcher rejected the offer of a contract renewal.

28 Jul 2017 13:46:41
If i am not wrong i think ashley fletcher went on a free transfer as his contract had run out and he didn't want to sign another one as his first team chances were slim to none due to the emergence of marcus rashfordinho.

Im all for woodward bashing, infact its one of my favourite activites as a united fan but i think he can steer clear of blame on this issue.

Difference was we didn't need/ want him. West ham probably had no plans to sell him but borough probably wanted him more. explaining the over-inflated price for him.

28 Jul 2017 14:05:41
Yeah I wonder how much we would have gotten for him had there been no contract issues? I'd wager not half what West Ham got for him and he managed one goal for them in something like 20 games, plus offered very little when he played.

We got £7m for Hernandez, a player that relies on pace - so being a bit older now you would think he would have depreciated in value. Guess what he doubled his value, we are rubbish in the market, the money wasted is shocking both on signings and sales.

Apples are being compared with bananas here.

Contract length, desire to sell, players desire to move, going rate at the time.

All things that differ when player a moves from club a to club b at time x and then club b to club c at point y.

Some of these examples are what I hope Liverpool to be for as long into the season as possible; pointless.

I think this is why we don't talk about money, there is so much more goes into a transfer than just the fee that the club pay, I would 'wager' that Chicarito was earning a lot more at United than he was at Leverkusen for example and LVG wanted to sell the player.

Your first paragraph is slagging the club off for something they haven't even done, do you really think Ashley Fletcher should have been sold for loads of money or could it possibly be that Boro have paid a ridiculous fee which has absolutely nothing to do with us?

£16m Danny Welbeck, £44m for the hated ADM, Morgan we sold on for profit, not all bad is it. Easy to beat Ed with a stick when let's be honest none of us have a clue how to run a football club, it's transfers and finances, what's more I don't wanna know, the owners have backed us, our debt doesn't effect us and we've got a top manager and have started winning trophies again, looks all good to me x.

28 Jul 2017 14:37:39
I talk about money mate. Maybe you and one or two of the Eds don't like talking about money.

Ultimately it's transfer season, what we pay and receive is one of the most interesting parts of the boring summer for me. Also it seems there are always excuses being made for our business.

Would be nice for us to get a "deal" for once wouldn't it. The excuses supporting our transfer dealings remind me of the stuff poor salesman would say to excuse missing their targets every month.

All I know is we buy players for a lot more than other clubs would pay, we pay higher wages than most would pay, we sell for less than other clubs would sell for. Contracts/ Location etc are all factors, but the results seem pretty damning to me.

If buying and selling players was a business alone, we would be out of business! Good job Woody can mitigate his dreadful performance with sponsorship deals and I assume other skillsets he has.

We could do with hiring an expert for these transfers and contract management - desperate to buy, desperate to sell.

£15m for Welbeck was awful business, premium for English exists but not for us!

ADM we lost money on
Morgan we lost money on (how much was his signing bonus and agent fees? )

List is a long one. Why try and excuse the inexcusable, we have the wrong people responsible for this part of the business imo.

You can't compare £7m a few years back to £16m this year. The financial conditions are not the same and it is crazy this year.

28 Jul 2017 17:46:12
It's not always about the money you get for a player! It's also about how vital freeing there wage up for incoming transfers is which a lot of the players you listed would be. A lot of those players are on high wages and so the only way of attracting other clubs to buy them is to sell them a fair per transfer rate!

Dsg. Fletcher moved to west ham and a fee had to be agreed in a tribunal. This has just been agreed at £1m . So even if we gave Fletcher a bit more money to sign a contract, let's say £10k a week more than we were willing to pay. Well, simply mathematics tells you that we would have spent around £500k more in the 12 months he's been at West ham but we would have got £5m more if we sold him to Boro as west ham have just done. Who the hell in our club thought that not giving the lad a bit more money was a better idea tgan selling him for £1m. It simply does not make economic sense.
I'm fully in agreement with Beast as there seems to be a following for Woodward no matter how rubbish he is at the transfer dealings. And let's face it, he is dire at that part of his job. And I also agree with Beast that on transfer business alone, United will not run as a business as they seem to miss so many deals. When you compare the stature of Woodward to the guile and business acumen if David Gill, you realize how terribly the transfer business at United is being run at present.

28 Jul 2017 18:15:13
Beast. If you know the ins and outs and how the transfers/ wages/ contracts etc work, by all means talk about it.

But my bet is, you haven't the foggiest. That's why the Eds tell us to ignore the money because it usually ends up confusing you, which, going by your post seems true.

28 Jul 2017 18:39:12
Why give a player a new contract with a bit more money, when you've no intention of playing him, and he wants more games?

28 Jul 2017 19:12:59
He was offered a contract but chose to leave and he was right he was never going to be good enough to play at united.

28 Jul 2017 19:42:29
In response to OP, no I don't think Woodward is the man for the job when it comes to transfers, but when I said that a couple of weeks ago I was shot down left, right and centre so it didn't seem to be the overall view on here. Personally I think Woodward should be left to concentrate on commercial deals and we should hire someone specifically to deal with transfers.
