Good to see a few goals after that drab Liverpool performance. I thought the majority of the team played well especially Carrick and Mata who showed their class in possession. The second half sort of turned into a training game as it drew to a close which is exactly what you need when the games are coming thick and fast.

My hat goes off to Wayne Rooney who not only played well but for prompting Pogba to take the spot kick ahead of him. He knew that Pogba needed that after his Liverpool showing and to relieve some media attention from his massive price tag. Very selfless from Wayne considering he is chasing a legendary record.

This is the type of performance this team are capable of producing and the type I want to see regularly. That run out was head and shoulders above what was served up the previous weekend and that type of performance is where we should be setting the bar.

It was confirmed after the game that the penalty takers were selected in advance of the game as they are for every game. Jose Often stresses that if 2penalties are awarded in any one match that the taker should change.

Who confirmed that Ken? It looked like Rooney prompted Pogba to hit it in my opinion.

Normally Rooney is pretty good on penalties, but he has been known to miss a few. Imagine if on his return to the first team he missed a penalty? The press would have torn him apart, and it certainly wouldn't have done his confidence much good.

Personally I think it makes sense for him to not take a penalty in those circumstances. There is far more to lose than gain, the press certainly wouldn't get off his back because he scored from 12 yards. So with little to gain and potentially much to lose its a no brainer.

I thought Martial taking the second more interesting, that seemed less planned and could have backfired. If Martial missed a penalty minutes after Pogba had scored one then questions would have been asked why Pogba didn't take the second one as well.

Post match on mutv.

21 Oct 2016 13:09:53
I'm fairly certain that Mata and Herrera have both been selected over Rooney as pen taker since the start of last season. Not quite the same media attention though.

21 Oct 2016 13:13:45
I don't think that was confirmed as such. If anything what Pogba said in his interview was at odds with that which Mourinho said. I don't think specific players are picked for each game, but rather Rooney and Pogba are amongst the standard penalty takers.

It seems Rooney let Pogba have it based off what Pogba said and what you could see on the pitch. So I agree with some respect being given to Rooney for that. He could very easily have justified taking it himself if he wanted to.

21 Oct 2016 13:12:20
Mourihno confirmed it in his post match presser maze.
It was a good performance thoroughly enjoyed it .

21 Oct 2016 13:15:22
Jose confirmed it in his interview after the match that Pogba was the agreed taker.

21 Oct 2016 13:35:05
No story in the facts though. Unbelievable Geoff 😀.

21 Oct 2016 13:35:17
Yeah but he would say that. It was at odds with what Pogba said, and you'd think pogba would know if he was supposed to be the penalty takers, and at that point Mourinho wouldn't have known what pogba said. Mourinho was just trying to cover over it so it wasn't a big deal.

21 Oct 2016 14:16:05
Yeah redD what would the manager know.

21 Oct 2016 14:24:04
'I told Wayne I wanted to take the penalty and he let me.

'I am very happy to score that penalty and from a player like him to let me it is big respect so I am very glad. 'pogba

jose was asked if he had an issue with it. give the right response imo.

21 Oct 2016 14:45:32
All hail Rooney for giving up his goalscoring opportunity.

21 Oct 2016 14:57:35
I was sat 6 rows back in the east stand, both Pogba and Martial looked to Rooney to get the ok to take the penalties, I felt bad for him he wouldn't have given them the ball to take them before, he looked beaten. The crowd were chanting his name to take the second one.

21 Oct 2016 15:10:54
stand
same story, for some on the site he will always get stick .
even over something as daft as who takes a pen .
in a game we played well and scored 4 .

21 Oct 2016 15:39:35
Don't bite jred it's only a bit of banter and 🎣 stand only having a laugh and putting his point across in a humorous way.

21 Oct 2016 15:47:16
JRed, how's that giving him stick? Not one person knows Rooney personally on here. For all you or I know he might not want to take a penalty for fear of missing it, maybe his bottle has gone?

21 Oct 2016 15:53:01
Actually maze, mourinho confirmed post match that pogba was supposed to be the penalty taker not rooney. I think you want to credit rooney do it for second one as jose said since the pen came minute after the first pogba did not want to take it.

21 Oct 2016 15:28:06
Redd or wayne wanted to take the penalty and pogba reminded him that manager had given him the responsibility and had to do a bit of face saving for rooney when asked about it, one can spin the story the way one wants, but fact of the matter is it is a non story people need to move on.

21 Oct 2016 16:24:41
Mourinho made it crystal clear after the game that pogba was 1st choice. It sound like pogba still asked for Rooneys blessing which is right due to Rooney being the usual penalty taker.

A non argument really. I feel like just another point of bashing rooney a bit when it's not really deserved.

21 Oct 2016 16:28:20
welsh
you sure about that?

21 Oct 2016 16:32:58
It's of no consequence. But we see a lot of copy and pastes of Jose quotes on here but this time on this matter Joses comments were ignored and not copied and pasted because they didn't suit.
I would have thought rooney would have wanted to take it would have helped his confidence and got him a record but the manager had instructed otherwise so he was professional. Good job done by all imo.
Nobody giving him stick but no point in bigging him up for giving pogba the pen when it was the manager that had instructed it.

21 Oct 2016 16:34:56
angel
think your on the money .

its a mindset thing .

martial also asked rooney for the second and pogba wasnt in sight.

21 Oct 2016 16:40:53
Jred I've said it before. You're far too touchy on the rooney topic. You need to learn to just ignore it at this stage.

I think people are saying these kind of things just so you bite.

21 Oct 2016 16:47:38
ken
lol read the above, jose said this jose said that . no mention at all of pogba .

full house this time.

21 Oct 2016 16:56:40
its like having a shadow who could ken be talking about?

"it’s not a problem for me, I always give indication of the one that has the responsibility [Pogba] but leave freedom for the players on the pitch [to make the decision]. "jose.

21 Oct 2016 16:57:44
angle
i agree some are looking for a bite, others for what ever reason have a serious issue with rooney .

21 Oct 2016 17:12:36
Listen jred I'm not the biggest fan of Rooney. You are well aware of my concerns and issues. Last night he played a damn sight better than he has in a long time and I hope it continues.

But this penalty thing is a non issue. Pogba was 1st choice, probably ran it by rooney so that it wasn't awkward. That's what team mates do.

Nobody deserves praise or condemnation because the manager gave the penalty duties to someone else.

21 Oct 2016 17:20:55
Ye are like a bunch of school kids.

21 Oct 2016 17:21:18
angl
its not directed at you pal, i agree with your comment

A non argument really. I feel like just another point of bashing rooney a bit when it's not really deserved.

but someone posted something that could be deemed positive about rooney, a few won't like that .
its not a bite just read the tone of the post, it funny really.

21 Oct 2016 17:22:36
angel

21 Oct 2016 17:23:59

21 Oct 2016 17:29:42

21 Oct 2016 18:26:45

21 Oct 2016 19:17:16

ps are u talking to yourself again i'm sure i'm the only one daft enough to reply to your post.

angry man, dennis wise touchy land? yawn.

21 Oct 2016 21:22:24
Now now children. Lol.

Seriously though what are you all on about, I'm sure I could put you all in seperate rooms compeletly by yourself and within minutes you'd all be arguing with the walls. Lol.

Pogba took one penalty, Martial the other. Both scored, we won comfortably and that's that.
