I'm feeling slightly odd saying this but I agree with Maze. It may be our money but we are splashing it about and as Ed002 has said, we are often the only club stupid enough to pay the price quoted. I'm glad we are rich and successful but we have started to look desperate. £100M for Pogba is insane.

Agree9 Disagree7

13 Jul 2016 18:22:49
Have we been linked with Pogba? Surprised no one mentioned it sooner.

13 Jul 2016 18:50:17
if mourinho and the club really want him and are willing to spend what juventus are demanding we can't really blame them. No other solution i guess.

13 Jul 2016 18:56:30
I agree AJH. There is always a point where you just have to step back. Is pogba the only solution? I hardly think so.

13 Jul 2016 19:28:28
We signed Rooney and Rio for 30m + some 12 to 15 years ago. For record fees.
My house is worth more than 3 times what I paid for it about 10 years ago that's the world we live in.
If a young couple buy the hose next door to me for 4 times what I paid 10 years ago i don't call them crazy or suggest they don't pay the price demanded for the house they want to live in. Nor would i suggest they buy a cheaper house or 3 cheaper houses because they can.
Jose wants pogba. The price seems crazy to me but its the player he wants and it appears the paymasters are willing to pay.
We are not looking our doing any different to what we have always done. We are paying top dollar for top talent that the manager wants.

13 Jul 2016 19:39:30
Good post ken.

13 Jul 2016 19:40:03
Sure let's forget pogba and go for sissiko because he is cheaper.

We are not the only club to spend silly money. Most rich clubs often pay over the odds for players because the selling clubs no they can demands high fee.

13 Jul 2016 19:46:03
Agree Chris.

13 Jul 2016 19:51:35
Also Rio was no different to pogba. He left the club west ham that nurtured him went to Leeds for big money and then left him and found his spiritual home. I'm sure some would have said then ah he moves every couple of years don't sign him. who is to say we won't go through another period of domination and pogba won't love it here and stay for 10 years?
I would also like to point out that pogba is a far superior to Roy Keane at the same age. He will turn out to be the best and that's why the price is as high as it is.

13 Jul 2016 19:59:06
Different player I know but I remember some papers calling the fee we received for Ronaldo as crazy. Point is its a sellers market they set the price since the supply of quality players is low. Marco Verati is about pogbas age same quality psg said they'd want 100mil for him if the papers are to be believed so you see this is the price range of this caliber of midfielder pay it or drop down a level.

13 Jul 2016 20:45:53
Chris, that's not what said, I said we have become mugs who pay way more than anyone else is prepared to. Pogba may be a good player (I remain unconvinced) but is he £20M more than Bale? The price is ridiculous and we should have shook our heads and moved on to other targets. Your Sissoko comment may be tongue in cheek but there are some great midfielders out there we could focus on instead of being held to ransom by a rogue agent.

13 Jul 2016 20:53:33
If Verratti and Pogba were available for the same money I'd take Verratti everyday of the week, and twice on rainy Wednesdays at Stoke. Far more influential player for his team than Pogba is for Juve.

13 Jul 2016 21:01:34
Last year, when the bid came in, I really wanted him to go to Chelsea. It didn’t happen but this year we will see, ’ Raiola said.

Raiola wants the move, any move in fact . He has told us juve don't want to sell and pogba is happy at juve, the ed has told us pogba doesn't really want to go to United .

I rate pogba, I don't think he is anywhere near as good as some do his performance in the euros are typical of how he played for juve imo.
That said I though he played ok at the euro but people expected more due to the hype .

I would like him at United but if you take away the fact he is a player you like or rate the deal starts to look a bit wrong . The same way the do Maria deal did.

13 Jul 2016 21:07:10
Mulam
I agree.

13 Jul 2016 21:07:35
Veratti would be my dream signing.

13 Jul 2016 21:19:59
Sorry Tony, my quips were more to all the posts I've seen and believe it or not I have seen people wanting sissoko.

Yes the deal feels wrong, most things do when it break new ground. For me it comes down to a few things. Can we afford it? Does the manager want him even if it limits money for other areas and will he improve us?

If all three are yes than I see no reason to go out and get him.
We paid 25m for RVP at 30 with a suspect injury record off the back on one top season with no resale value.

13 Jul 2016 21:40:19
AJH
He's 20 million more than bale after every prem league club gets at least 60 million more this season due to the sky deal. If bale was sold now under the same circumstances in today's climate do you really think he we go for 80+ million? The manager wants Pogba and he happens to be the most successfull manager of recent times. You can include red nose fergie aka "I pick moyes and get behind your new manager" then 2 books later "it wasn't me who picked moyes. "
As for ed02 let's not quote bullshit like "United are the only ones stupid enough to pay the money. "
He/ she is a Chelsea fan are they not? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong there. He also said the toxics got rid of LVG.
If they did then all I can say is I'm toxic through and through and have never needed anyone else to tell me how I should be supporting my own team!

13 Jul 2016 21:58:26
Jred and ken agree with each other and that I'm right about something. Go to confession folks, the end is nigh.

Perhaps we could sign Verratti as no.6 and Pogba as no.10 and ship out Rooney?

13 Jul 2016 22:21:52
Now I agree with you mulam😂.

14 Jul 2016 02:27:36
We're setting a worrying precedent. The mug team that will pay silly money every time. Didn't we always use to laugh at the other teams that did that?

{Ed007's Note - Utd have always overpaid for players. That's why they've broke the transfer record so many times. There's nothing wrong with flexing your financial muscle if you can afford it and Utd have done it more than most over the years. You're talking about a club that probably gets more in training kit sponsoship than some teams get from shirt sponsorship, I'm pretty sure if they buy Pogba they can afford it - and probably any other signings they have or will make.
Honestly mate, why does it matter? You should be proud and bragging about how your club can afford it.}

14 Jul 2016 08:58:12
007 your right there imo.
But some people are not in favour of Jose and will question everything that happen under his leadership. If Fergie had been spending the money most of those same puerile would be proud.
We did it with Rio, Rooney, veron etc all way over the odds at the time.
As jred said above people will use whatever it is to suit their argument.
I rate stones but think 50m is crazy
I rate pogba but think 85m is crazy
But if the manager wants them and we can afford them and convince them to come then that's ok
We are doing nothing different to what we always have done
The major difference now is that some people will question everything Jose does because they didn't want him.
Moan when the glazers were not spending big moan when they its the usual story you won't keep all the people happy all the time.
But that is football everybody hads an opinion and they have the right to air it. There is no right or wrong answer but to say we are now the silly boys paying overt the odds for players.
How much did real Madrid pay for Danilo? Kovacic? City for bony mangak a ottamendi? 'llLiverpool for everybody? Chelsea for their flops. All at inflated prices? We are no different from anybody else in that regard and never were imo.

{Ed007's Note - You've hit the nail on the head, Barlow.}

14 Jul 2016 14:44:14
Ken, we've a history of discovering rough diamonds, encouraging youth, and yes, spending top money on a few individuals over the years. There needs to be a balance, imo. We seem to have crossed a line recently.

I'm not overly fussed right now, because I appreciate the difficult circumstances we're in just now. I just hope it doesn't become the norm.

It's not an anti-Jose thing, because it happened under LVG and Moyes as well.

All the teams you mentioned at the end, are all teams we've stood and sneered at over the years for the way they conduct their transfer business. I'm just a bit uncomfortable with how we now so easily justify the very same thing.
