First time poster here love the page and the input from the Eds.
I have seen loads of posts about our attack, midfield and defence but little about our goalie situation.
How do you guys rate our back up in Romero? Obvioulsy nothing to say about Degea that hasn't been said before but I think Romero will never be anything more than a back up.
Do we have any plans to change the keepers at all?
Thanks in advance keep up the good work Eds.

{Ed002's Note - Whilst Manchester United are not looking to change goalkeepers Real MAdrid may well look again to De Gea if they cannot get their preferred choice.}

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree Romero is not good enough, mistake waiting to happen - doesn't induce confidence, I worry personally let alone the defenders.

I've nothing other than my gut to go off, but I think Butland could be the replacement, I certainly think we could do a lot worse. We need homegrown and I reckon would cost £20m ish.

I think DDG will be off in the summer.

I'd love to see DDG's stats for the last few seasons. I'm guessing he has made at least 60% less saves this year than in the last few,

{Ed001's Note - is that because he has less shots to save or do you just think he is not playing well?}

24 Feb 2017 15:19:15
First choice being Courtois?

Romero is good back up but I'd rather see Johnstone there.

If we had to replace De Gea I wouldn't know where to start. I'd go for Begovic and Pickford I think.

Ed - in my opinion he has made more mistakes this year than the past few combined. However he hasn't been tested as much either so the clean sheet tally and lack of action has glossed over a dip in form. I'd love him to stay (only if we sign a leader at the back), because what DDG does in terms of world class saves, he is very quiet and we need a leader back there so the loss won't be as bad as most people think.

Romero is not a good keeper imo, but if you look at the stats he is a world beater because we are a much more solid unit than we have been in front of him!

{Ed001's Note - ok cheers, I just wondered.}

thanks for the quick reply Ed002 - given the fact that a deal was almost done but both sides blamed each other for the admin errors do we still have a kind of relationship with RM that would see them ask quietly about De Geas availability?

{Ed002's Note - The "relationship" between clubs is never really as relevant as folks think.}

I don't think he'll leave. More likely they sign Courtois. He's been very open about moving.

Beast, while I agree that DDG seems to have made more mistakes this year than he has previously I think you need to consider that in the last few years DDG has been exceptional.

All goalkeepers make mistakes, same as all outfield players. Difference being when keepers make mistakes they normally end up with the team conceeding a goal. Neuer, Navas, Courtois, Buffon ect all make a few mistakes every season.

Having watched a lot of football this season I can honestly say even with DDG making a few more mistakes than usual he hasn't really made anymore than any other goalkeeper anywhere else in the world.

I think he would be a massive loss, there are few keepers in the world in the same braket as him. And I don't think any of them would be available.

Consider it like this in the last 30 years we have had three top class keepers, all the other keepers we have signed have come up short. We have signed a lot of keepers in that time, Bartez, Ricardo, Howard, Foster, Lindegaard, Carroll ect ect ect and none of them have been anywhere near good enough and we have won very little with them between the sticks.

I'm not sure who we could sign to replace DDG if he left, but I know for sure he would be an inferior keeper and we will have weaken our team.

I hope DDG stays as he is a great keeper. However if he does go I would be happy with us trying to tempt Schmeichel away from Leicester, he was brilliant last year and they suffered badly without him. He could grow over the next few years into a great like his dad.

Shappy - I am full of praise for DDG and he has been an incredible shot stopper for us. He has been below the high standards he set on several occasions this season though.

Our defence has looked at 6's and 7's very often in recent years whenever we have been attacked (not so much this year) . But we had the ball so much under LVG that it seemed whenever an opponent got it either DDG pulled off a great save or they scored. A calming and organising influence behind the defence may have been very helpful.

Our defence has been poor for a long time, so I'm not excusing them. But having a Buffon, Schmeichel type talker leading them, maybe the keeper wouldn't have had to make so many saves. DDG is arguably the best shot stopper in the world, but is found wanting in several important aspects as well imo.

I'd rather not gamble as DDG is among the best in the world, but if we are forced to sell then I don't think the loss would be as big as the media will build it up. Fine lines with keepers and our team needs a leader at the back more than anything at the minute. Hopefully a CB will be signed that can lead and we keep DDG, Courtouis seems to be the key as noted above.

Ed, my point was he was our player of the season for a few consecutive years which suggested we were having to defend a lot. Right now we are dominating and attacking a lot more leaving him with a lot to less to do. He's a top keeper but he is unlikely to be our player of the season this year, mainly because he hasn't had a lot to do.

{Ed001's Note - ok cheers.}

I think Real will try to sign da gea in the summer and I think he'll go. Hopefully kroos or verane coming in the opposite direction.
The best goalkeeper apart from curtois and Neuer is definitely the Benfica gk, Ederson de Moraes. He's young, extremely agile, very good at shot stopping and not scared to command his area, also very vocal. City are rumoured to be after him but I'll definitely go for him. He's already one of the best and in my opinion will be the best gk in three years time.
Romero is a good backup keeper but nothing else.

I disagree somewhat there Beast, in my playing days I often played at full back and as a member of the defensive unit I was more concerned that the guy between the sticks could make the saves to get us out of jail than if he was hollering at me and telling me where to stand.

There is so much more to commanding your area that just shouting. The main trick is to be a truely great goalkeeper, that way your defenders know that if they do slip up the guy behind them has their back and opposition attackers don't fancy their chances of beating the guy between the sticks. Reputation plays a big part.

There are plently of loud keepers, but only a few top class ones. The two don't always go hand in hand.

Neuer for me is the only keeper as good or possibly slightly better than DDG. For that reason I wouldn't want to replace him with some loud mouth who isn't as good.

With you on this Beast, Dave has made a couple of errors but nothing major but has really developed into a leader in the team and very vocal.

Best keeper in the world.

25 Feb 2017 08:12:23
I'd say down to the fact that he has had less to do ed001. But when he has been called upon he has been top notch.

No idea what beast is on about. 'Glossed over a dip in form'

He'd be a huge loss if he left. Much like when Schmeichel left we took years to find a proper replacement.

25 Feb 2017 12:23:48
Are you all for real?

Romero has been brilliant since he joined us, his saves to goal ratio is very good and aside from the likes or Neuer, Lloris, etc. Who aren't realistic at all he's the best option CURRENTLY if De Gea were to leave Imo.
