LVG sounds pissed off in the press conference. Says that Pedro was the easiest transfer ever because he had a release clause, also reiterated that he is a player that fits the system, but then backtracked by claiming that he never explicitly said he was interested in signing him. Interesting to hear him imply that he can't say everything he wants to say about the transfer. Sounds like he isn't happy with what happened, especially with Barca's behaviour.

Does he sound like a man who "pulled the plug" on the transfer? Not a chance. Sounds like a man who thought he had a new player in the bag, and is embarrassed that the money men f'd it up. Maybe Ed didn't tell him that the process is about maximising profits rather than winning trophies.

I think it's just starting to look even more embarrassing the way we are trying to cover up our mess.

21 Aug 2015 12:26:56
Oh god Danny I've just seen the quotes from the press conference and they don't seem to be anything like what you are suggesting, maybe I need to see it for myself properly but he said his relationship with Woodward is great and he trusts him, see you missed that bit out of this post.

Gds2
That's the diplomatic part

21 Aug 2015 13:44:53
Danny, you should join the Daily Mail.

21 Aug 2015 13:56:49
Sounded nothing like that. LVG was saying if they wanted pedro they would of got him easily.

21 Aug 2015 12:47:22
Just sounds like a man who got fed up by the pedro questions. He clearly said pedro fit the profile but he was not interested in him.

21 Aug 2015 12:54:03
He also said that only the club and the players themselves know and that he trusts Ed. Yes, he has to say this but it sound to me like there may be more signings in the pipeline. These interviews can be interpreted so many ways but it is funny that he told the media that basically they haven't got a clue

21 Aug 2015 13:17:06
I disagree danny. I think he made it very clear, if we wanted pedro then it's the easiest transfer, those were his words. And then proceeded by saying how good Ed is at his job. And how he completely trusts him. LVG is not a man to keep it in when he is disappointed, just take a look back at his career.

21 Aug 2015 13:27:29
I think someone is hearing what they want to hear Danny.

21 Aug 2015 13:28:50
It just goes to show that people see and hear different things because I never had that impression at all.

21 Aug 2015 13:29:14
Maybe you should watch the short clip. A man clearly embarrassed and frustrated, and the Woodword comment was thrown in at the end as a token gesture.

21 Aug 2015 13:15:24
so your just hearing it how you WANT it to sound, i don't think Van Gaal wanted Pedro that much, i think he saw him as a "Nice to Have" not "Must have" he can't sign another attacking midfielder when we have an abundance of midfielders, and i'd much rather see youth players push through, and focus on a 20 goal plus striker, IMO i don't think we need a defender, we can assess that area in January, we may not have the srongest XI in the league but i do beleive we have one of the strongest squads. i question sometimes if you lot are really Man United fans or just glory hunters from the 90's.

21 Aug 2015 14:25:03
Reading it totally wrong if that is what you got from his comments.

21 Aug 2015 14:25:07
I watched the full interview and it didn't seem like that to me at all.

21 Aug 2015 14:42:58
I watched the full interview and it seems to me that the manager basically said we could have had him weeks ago because it was an easy transfer; but ultimately, we didn't want him.

The manager is probably annoyed with the press for building these stories up to a point that even the clubs own fans are bickering among themselves about a player who frankly isn't as good as some are proclaiming him to be.

I would rather go out and buy a genuine top talent than a player who could be hit or miss in the PL.

21 Aug 2015 15:16:46
"Maybe you should watch the short clip"

and clearly take everything out of context.

21 Aug 2015 15:39:17
Ah well, seems like on this occasion the quotes I read were spot on and in the context I read them based on these replies. Does seem like a game of 'find anything we can to make out United board and manager are idiots' at the moment, strange really after the good start.

21 Aug 2015 16:26:11
Gds I think its a case of some fans can't wait to be proved right and are hoping the wheels come off so they can say they was right.

In fairness there was a similar attitude withe regards to moyes as well.

And it will probably happen with the next manager too

You just can't please all of the people all of the time.

21 Aug 2015 13:00:09
Just out of interest with the Pedro transfer LVG says the deal would have been 'no problem as he had a release clause in his contract'.

Now please correctly me if I am wrong but didn't Ed002 say these types of clauses can only be activated by clubs in the same country (and Portugal in regards to the Spanish league) and that they are irrelevant to other clubs such as those in the PL?

So if that is the case then the release clause comment is pretty pointless and irrelevant really.

{Ed002's Note - It is, the club could charge whatever they want - but what they wanted was the price they had set in the clause.}
