Reading maguire out of euro squad hope it gives him extra time to find a new club.
Maybe Southgate will have a lot of making up to do with him and rashford if he joins us after the euros if they are still here.

Ken as much as Maguire isn’t right for United, he’s well suited to international football.

In a World Cup fixture I counted him take 13 touches before passing the ball. Infuriating. But the pace suits him so well in the early rounds.

I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised by Southgate dropping Grealish, as well as 2 CB’s from the squad, and taking 2 strikers for the first time.

Much less impressed with him starting Trent in midfield while we are spoiled in that area, but he’s not going to change from two holding midfielders.

Gives him time to get himself right over summer and ready for next season with us.

I really hope not spenno.
I think he is a good lad. Popular and he is unfortunate to miss out on the euros. All the lads left out must be gutted.
I'd have grealish in but it's hard to argue with the rest.

I can't stand watching Grealish. He does the same thing everytime he gets the ball and it slows the play down.

The result is boring and predictable plus it gives the opposition chance to get back into shape. Then he usually falls over.

I'd love to see you play football mancman ??.

I thought Grealish was a funny signing for City at the time, he certainly isn't as exciting as he was when he was at Villa, a player who really got the fans on their feet. He's come in and fitted into the City way and probably understands the game better and is definitely more of a team player having worked with Guardiola but I think he has massively changed his game which is a shame. One thing defenders hate are players who run at you and dribble into the box.

Southgate’s squad selection is further confirmation of why I’m crossing everything that he extends his England contract and stays away from United.

Whatever about Jack the lad, leaving James Maddison out the squad shows gross incompetence. He’s had his injury issues, but set pieces are far more important in international tournaments. At least 6 members of his squad are likely to see zero minutes. There’s no possible argument that one of them couldn’t have been dropped for Maddison. Because if you’re a goal down with 20 or 10 minutes left, you just might need a player who is deadly from set pieces to get you a goal. I know that TAA and Tripper are in the squad, but Maddison is a true dead ball special-ist. I’d imagine the rest of the coaching staff are scratching their heads at the stupidity.

I agree with dropping Grealish and Maddison. Whilst on their day both have that 'x factor' that's always useful nboth have had woeful second halves of the season.
On the left Gordon has played his way into that position in the past few months while Grealish has largely played second fiddle to Doku. Palmer can also play that role.
Maddison has lost his early season form whilst Eze has been spectacular.

I understand Maddison being dropped.

He’s not as good as he thinks he is, and he and Southgate have history.

In an interview Maddison said “I have to be the main man, even at family dinners”. I’m paraphrasing a little, but he sounds like a bit of a pillock. Not exactly the level of ego you need around a team when you are trying to find balance and harmony.

Palmer, Gordon, Bowen, Bellingham, Foden and Saka have all had better seasons. Set piece delivery is an area where England are probably as good as anyone else with Trent, Trippier and Foden being amongst the very best.

Angel, I don't mind admitting I am/ was a terrible footballer.

However, like everyone else posting on this website I am an arm chair expert and I know everything about how to play the game.

I disagree Wazza, I think Maddison’s delivery into the box from frees and corners is genuinely up there with the best in the world. Far above anything Foden, or the other younger lads you mentioned.

Trent and Trippier are both top class at setpieces. But both are defenders, and with Shaw out and limited experience in the centre of park, could well be starters.

Maddison offers an attacking threat to bring on, who offers something unique on set pieces, especially how he makes the ball move in the air. Going into a big tournament, any good manager would want a player like that to bring on. He has brought a handful of young lads that won’t even get on the pitch instead.

I don’t care tbh because I’m not English, but I think it shows Southgate in a poor light if he left him at home because they don’t get on.

Lol mancman, fair play.

07 Jun 2024 18:07:17
Fair enough Danny.

I remember the Spurs game when Liverpool had 9 men. I found Maddison to be frustrating as he was failing to break Liverpool down while trying the same thing repeatedly. He was then subbed off very late and Spurs went on to score.

What we'd lose if we played Maddison in the place of Foden or Bellingham is made up for in terms of set pieces by Trent and Tripper imo. Foden took corners for City when De Bruyne was on the pitch, his delivery is really good. I get the argument for the last 20 minutes but I don't see what else he brings compared to what any of the others in his position cannot already do better than him.

07 Jun 2024 18:36:30
Oh don’t get me wrong he’s very frustrating and inconsistent, and he basically stopped trying toward the end at Leicester. But I’d definitely have him in the squad.

07 Jun 2024 19:44:34
Ok would not have had Grealish and would not have had Madison, there are plenty of options for both their positiona in this squad. I largely think Southgate got the squad right.
