The truth remains that United is not likely to be the top destination for any top player at this moment in time, so there may yet be a tendency and need to both gamble and perhaps overpay. But the instinct is right. We're replacing Varane, a player who came to us at the end of his career with no residual value, a known propensity for injury and was paid over £17m pa with a young player with potential for 1/ 2 that amount.

If Yoro proves to be the player many are expecting then, if RM want him in 2 years time they will have to pay a lot more than United have just done. So, there is an opportunity to profit, unlike Varane. The risk is that he will not pan out in the EPL, or at least not immediately.

Clearly the new management team is taking a different approach, and it's what we have all wanted: a return to the United philosophy of constantly building for a better future on a foundation of nurturing young talent. Will there be missteps along the way? Of course. With Mainoo, Garnacho, Amad, Hojlund, and now Zirkzee and Yoro we can see a squad building that could be worth far more than is on the books. That's good business. The new management team has been at work for but a couple of weeks. They, along with the manager, seem to have a clear idea of what they're trying to achieve. I have no idea how any player will fare within our set up, but I do sense that a much needed change in direction has taken place.

I get what you’re saying, but since when have United been a buy to sell club? We should be looking to be the club that all players want to be at, not A Real Madrid feeder club! I wouldn’t sell them a canteen lady, never mind one of our players.

I dunno about that Fireman, I'd sell them most of our current players to be honest. Only a few in our current squad I wouldn't want to sell to them.

You are spending way too much time about Real Madrid and him going there in a few years. He may end up being at the club for the next 10 years if he turns out to be what people think. Its a pointless conversation imo and most important thing is how well he settles down and adapts to the Pl and life in Manchester and at United. Winning trophies being happy and in general players mindset come into it when they decide to make a change. We are a massive club and not some transit station mid level team with little history.

Ahmad - think you make a really good point about being settled, adapted and happy in Manchester/ PL. It's not something that is obvious watching games but to get the best out of players they have to have the mental side right. I think we have bought dozens of really talented players who failed to demonstrate what they're truly capable of. I wonder if an area we have struggled as a club is player wellbeing, and we only notice when it looks like players stop trying and the culture is poor. We get on the players backs, but there's so much that goes into being on top of your game, and its not just what happens on the training ground.

For me, the important thing is that he's been open about wanting Madrid. The club knows and can plan accordingly. If RM come in for him in 2-3 years, we'll already have replacements scouted and we'll be ready to get the replacement in before letting Yoro go, and he won't go cheaply.

I don't mind us getting a few years out of him and then selling him at a massive profit and using that money to improve the squad. We are not in the position we once were, and we have to accept that. If an influx of cash from selling Yoro in a few years can help fund the final stage of transition back into being a top team challenging for the title, I'm ok with that.

We also need to remember that RM may lose interest in him over the next few years, or move on to the next "next big thing" which could then see us having Yoro for the next 10-15 years. Just becuse he wants to go to RM and they are interested now, doesn't mean he'll end up there. RMs interest can be fickle, and if another such promising youngster suddenly emerges, RM could forget all about Yoro.

Shappy…. we’re getting there. But you get my point.
