Maybe a shrewd new owner looking to repair their club’s credibility in the transfer market would look interested at an over-inflated player, low-ball, and then walk away. Might get the player, but definitely send a message to other clubs. *cough* Branthwaite *cough*.

I think it's much less about sending a message and more about running the club in a sensible and sustainable way.
The club will have a budget, and they will have a maximum value they are willing to pay for a player.
If the club can't get a deal that suits them then it makes no sense to get a deal that doesn't.
No deal is better than a bad deal.

Even if Everton were interested in Lindelof or AWB, both players earn over double what they pay Branthwaite. They literally couldn’t afford the wages for either of them. Would likely require Utd to pay half of their wages for the final year of their deals.

Fuser, that's a valid point. The wages we pay will make it very difficult to get clubs to accept swap deals.
Lindelof is on 120k per week, and AWB on 90k per week. I can't see either being offered more than 75k per week from any club. Even that would put them near or at the top of many EPL clubs wage structure. While the EPL clubs tend to pay more than most other clubs from other leagues.
In Europe only those clubs that regularly play UCL football would likely be able to pay players 75k per week or more.
I don't see many UCL clubs coming in for our players to be honest.
