So much of winning at sports is about psychology, particularly when it comes to finals. Neither Kane nor Southgate possess that final piece of the puzzle. England had a decent first half but they were not primarily set up to win but not to lose. Spanish teams are set up to win. Negativity.
We have had some great players but not since 1966 have we had a manager who knew how to make a team that was greater than the sum of its individual parts.

Agreed. Southgate will get a new contract and stay on for the World Cup I expect.
If it was me in charge at the FA I’d be going straight after Klopp.

I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place.
On one hand Southgate has done a decent job in terms of results. Certainly better than most England managers. Yet it's obvious that he can't take the team that next step to actually winning something.
Yet if he's replaced this summer then I have a real feeling of dread that if things don't start well next season that EtH will be replaced with Southgate.
So I hope he's given a new 2 year deal and we can rule him out of the United job.

Shapoy,
Give him a 4 year contract just to make sure lol.

Sign him up to england for life!

Too right fallguy.
Klopp could do wonders with this England squad!

I'd love to see Klopp as England manager.
It's a really interesting scenario to see managers in, where they can't buy players to fit their system, it's a real test.

Shappy, yes he's done a decent job, but that's it given the talent pool at his disposal. Meanwhile ETH has shown that he can win trophies. And I for one am not prepared to start out the season believing that ETH will fail, or that Southgate would do any better if the board decided to hire him.

Shawthing, nothing is a given. There have been great managers with as talented groups of players who have achieved less with England.
I'd 1000% prefer EtH as our manager over Southgate.
I don't believe he will fail, but to be blind to the possibility that he could is just plain gullibility. Like it or not I think it's fairly clear that the manager has kept his job because there is no one better available and willing to take the job. Rather than because EtH is the man they want. It is a marriage of convenience, which means that the moment it becomes inconvenient it will end.
That's not what I want, but it's the reality of the situation. Hopefully the manager does well next season and we can all keep moving forward.
I don't think Southgate would do better. Which is why I'm concerned that he could be a genuine option to replace him if EtH is relieved of his duties.

England ranked 23rd out of 24 teams for expected goals per 90 from open play at the Euros. Now I don’t usually pay too much notice to fluffy stats, but anyone watching could see that England hardly had a shot.
And that’s with better players than United has.
Southgate will be a disaster, we’d be bored to tears, and will finish mid-table before he’s eventually sacked. Nothing is certain but there’s more than enough evidence to suggest Southgate would be a huge failure, at any PL club.

Managing an international team where you get the pick of the best there is and if you listen to the pundits and media this england team has generational talent all over the pitch and he can't get a tune of them. At club level you have to play and manage squads that are not necessarily the best players and add injuries to that too and sometimes no options. He will sink imo no matter how good a guy he is.
