An observation so far watching the euros. Whilst people will champion the idea that certain players are a must have and must be signed, what is quite evident is the players with the big reputations and crazy valuations don't stand out against players i have mostly never heard off.
It goes with people like jred's argument that you don't need to go spend stupid money on players because they are the flavour of the season having had a good year in some league.
For me personally the guy who looks like a complete player is the no 4 guy from croatia perisic and expect him to move to a big club if he is not there already ( don't know where he plays)
I hope we buy smart this transfer window and many of the busy touted as targets are not worth the money.

X I agree in part.
A lot of the so called elite players once taken out off their comfort zone and asked to play a different role in their international team don't look nearly as good. Certain players play well in a team that plays to their strengths and once they are removed from that system / team/ club and sometimes even coach they can't replicate that sort of form when they move clubs. That's why all transfers are such high risk.
Often players are signed that are excelling elsewhere but in order to replicate our improve on their form they're are so many mitigating circumstances that can lead to a severe dip in form so much so that they can look like a completely different player.
There are very few that can move and slot in seamlessly and instantly change a team's fortunes. finding those is really difficult imo.

Personally I think it's all about risk. Look at any industry in the world that is carried out on a mass scale, for example say journalism. I bet the actual quality difference between the very elite and the very good is not that much, but over 50 articles you would be able to form an opinion on who is the better journalist. Same thing with football.
I bet it's the same with pilots, traders, F1 drivers, lawyers, doctors etc.
The margins are so small and the variables so vast, that forming an opinion based on a few games when experts in their field play can be very difficult.
You pay for consistency, but the margins are so fine you often feel you are being ripped off. However top teams need to pay big money for those players that are marginally better at certain things to ensure they stay near the top.
I bet if you watch Perisic and Rakitic 20 times, Rakitic would stand out more. Kyle Walker has even looked half decent! Oppoostion, team mates, fitness, manager, botheredness (if that's a word hah), all factors to consider in one off games.

I agree with what's been said here.
We used to have a reasonably good team till LVG seemed to play almost everyone out of their position. However that said, we shouldn't have everyone as squad player but also need at least a strong specialist in every department be it forward, midfielder or defense. The only real specialist role is the goalkeeper. Not to blame LVG but think the manager is the key specialist to get the best of the team. If he can't do that, not sure who can really.

You need a player with the right attributes to play in your system in your league .
Players like kagawa had the skills to play a certain way in a certain system but that doesn't mean he was the right player for united.
I honestly think a lot of people underate our players, we watch very good TEAMS and think all there players are amazing .
Bastian was worldclass in a munich or germany shirt but you saw the limits of his game in a united shirt.
Fergy wasnt perfect, but he was very good at buying the right type of player, that fit the profile.

perisic looks a top player and walker has everything to be a top player.
If walker was playing for barcelona and was brazilian he would look amazing.
