So many great bits of info from Fergie. It is quite interesting and puts things into perspective.

Agree0 Disagree0

I liked his attitude about no player earning more than the manager in particular.

Fergie reckons Messi and Ronaldo are the only two world class players in the game at the moment . He then claims Giggs was one of only four world class players he managed , yet Giggs though a very good player and great servant to the club never got near the levels of Messi and Ronaldo

Very interesting. Few indirect digs at those who didn't make it onto his 'world class' list as you would expect.

I have to agree. The manager is the focal point of the club and the most important piece of it. Fantastic. I really miss Fergie.

Same here he was one a kind and his record speaks for itself. His positives out ways the negatives by a country mile no matter what people say and as they say you sometimes don't appreciate what you have until they are gone.

Unsurprising he left Beckham off of his world class list. I think he could quite easily include Schmeichel and Vidic on his list. But like most people, world class players (e.g. Balon d'Or winners) tend to only be attacking players.

I never really could get my head around how a player can earn more than the man he has to listen too.

In the interests of debate do you think Rory McIlroys manager earns more than the player, Andy Murrays coach earn more than him? Does Hodgson earn more or the England cricket coach.

SAF played a blinder, in business the manager usually earns more than those they manage, the hierarchy. However, football and sport is not usual and hierarchy is not standard. The club pay the going rate for skill, a premium. SAF was part of a culture that reduced contracts when the player got over 30. If we go down that route how much should the Assistant Manager get or the coach or the captain?

Dangerous precedent and SAF played a blinder, when actually they perhaps the club should have recognised the work he was doing with his wages but that the pinnacle player of the team on the pitch should earn the most.

Haha imagine if it was Red Man and all the coaches had to earn more than the players, the club would go bust in a week.

Redman

Individual Sports are very different to team sports and not a fair comparison.

The only thing that is comparable where a player gets paid more than the manager is in American Sports but that is a whole different kettle of fish

Team sports? Like I said does Trevor Bayliss get paid more than every member of the England cricket team, or Hodgson above Rooney and Co? Are you telling me that Pelligrini is paid more than Yaya? A football team is not a standard business model and well done SAF persuading them he was worth that. Like GDS said clubs would start going bust pretty quickly.

Just like with players - a manager's value in terms of wages should be judged on a case by case basis. What is right for one individual at one club isn't right for another at a different club.

SAF was one of the greats (on a par with Ronaldo/Messi in manager's terms if you like) and gave us an incredible amount of his time - meaning his salary was rightly very big. And it suited his approach to be seen as the "top man" too, in terms of maintaining respect etc. Times have changed somewhat over the last 10 years in terms of player power but SAF was a one off (in terms of success) and part of the old school (in terms of earning respect).

It would be a bit of a joke by comparison were the likes of Pellegrini to come in from day one and without SAF's success/experience at that stage - and demand a wage bigger than the likes of Yaya. If he stayed for a decade and had great success then who knows, maybe he would deserve it?

If I remember correctly Wenger was on a bigger wage than SAF at some point, I know who was getting the best value for money there.

Mostly agree with you there, no problem with judging case by case and certainly given what SAF achieved I have no problem with him being treated as a special case in relation to wages. However, for me that judgement should have been against his peers not his players.

I see what you're saying Redman. It would be interesting to know what the other major managers were earning at the time because I was under the impression that Saf wasn't the highest paid for most of his career but you could easily argue he should have been up there in the top 3 of world managers from the late 90's onwards. Would be good to see the figures.

On a side note I seem to remember reading that big Sam was earning something ridiculous at West ham up there among the top managers in Europe. If true, that was a strange one!

Yes the big Sam contract was strange, possibly down to bonuses to keep them up, who knows. No problem with paying SAF in line with his position amongst managers but comparing himself to his players seems merely a way of showing his authority.

and how much you pay to have a young fergy now ?
