Have to say Varela has been very impressive. So positive going forward down the right but was also quick to get back into his position. Think if Darmian is out then he should be his back up.
Smalling at fault for Derby's goal, chasing the ball and left a huge gap in defence though Schneiderlin should have tracked the runner. Smalling has been iffy of late so I hope he picks his form up again.
Overall, I'd say it was a good performance. Looked better in attack. More fluid and creative but yet again a bit dodgy in defence. I don't think Mata, Lingard or Fellaini should be starting games for us again, we have better options imo (Herrera, Januzaj, Pereira, Memphis) .

It goes to show that you should play the young lads in the positions they are learning about rather than shoe horn wingers as fullbacks. Varela is a fine back up for Darmian and Borthwick-Jackson is a decent backup for Shaw too.

Varela was top knotch for a young lad, hope he stays for the season and gets games.

I'm not sure Darmian has done enough lads to be our first choice right back. The jury is most definitely out on him in my opinion.
Very good win though it was much more positive. Into the 5th round and I would be delighted with an fa cup win this season.

Goes to show that playing full backs in the full back position works very well 😉 they both were very good today verela in particular.

fully agree no7, play players in correct position or not at all, and use the young kids when the 1st/ 2nd choice is out.

Every manager seems to be guilty of doing it, even SAF. Remember Rafael in midfield?!
