Just another theory
LvG has confirmed that we will mostly play 4-3-3 so assuming that is true then maybe LvG is already convinced that Herrera and Smalling are good enough to start and maybe is playing others to judge who should start along with Herrera and Smalling?
We'll find out in the Spurs game.

I said I had hoped that's what was happening to Herrera in a post the other day. Pray to God/Allah/LvG/(enter your choice)

I definitely think that's the case with Smalling, as the most trusted and experienced centre back he was played with the youth. I'd like to think the same applies with Herrera.
I think the reason we played 4-2-3-1 on tour was because it best allowed for the youth to get involved.

I think he will go Schneiderlin, Schweinstieger, Carrick midfield 3 and Depay, Rooney, Mata front 3, also think it will be Blind and Smalling at CB.
Not happy with Blind at CB but see how he goes i suppose.
