I know there is a very dividing opinion, what are your thoughts about Mason Greenwood as a footballer. I am not asking you to comment on the issues he has created but purely football sense.

I have been watching since 2007, and I thought he has been the best player to come from the academy.

Some would argue that rashford would be in the mix.

But with greenwood, he was a special special talent. I think we finish 4th under ralf rangnick if he was still a squad player.

On previous performances alone, he's easily a 70-80m player.
So many of his goals were out of nothing. Its just he's made for putting the ball in the back of net.

I know its a horrible thing what he has done, but so many football players have been terrible over the course of their careers.

I am not saying there should be a comeback soon, but I hope we see him again playing in the United Shirt.
If any of those italian clubs lands him, i am certain he will score 20+ league goals.

Greenwood showed real potential and looked to be progressing with the potential to be our future number 9. I think there was a period where he stagnated which could be down to wrong Managers not bringing him on.
The big question for me (ignoring the obvious) is what sort of player will he return as, could come back and perform at a higher level or he could be the next Deli Ali (with the performance drop off) .
No matter what our views on the incident he is going to need 6/ 12 months to get back playing which supports a loan option if not sold.

2.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 12:44:11
Purely footballing wise he was the real deal as a modern day forward, can play up top or on the right and get 30+ goals a season consistently. His ability to finish is really top tier.

A less insecure football club that wasnt so concerned with what their neighbours are doing would have made him the leading striker in the 2021-2022 season instead of signing a past his best 37 year old legend.

3.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 12:47:32
I think under ETH he could become a real force again.
Personally i don't think that we will ever see him playing for United again.

I know it’s a divisive topic, but on purely artistic merits, how do people rate Charles Manson as a folk singer?

5.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 13:20:43
My info is that the decision is being left to the new owners. Also that they are waiting for announcement of sale to bring him back to block out the negative media. EtH wants him to stay, but understands it's not his choice. I think he will play for us again. I wouldn't rule out a loan though if we get our targets, if not, then Greenwood may be all we have. Unless we go and get Weghorst. ?.

6.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 13:46:57
I would hate for us to sell him, and then, in couple of years, one of our rivals bring him in, so he could be a success for them.

Loaning him might be a good option, selling him could be very risky.

He is a great finisher, which is what we missed last season. Good with his left, good with his right, can score in difficult (tight) situations.

I would really hate it if we let him go.

7.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 14:50:44
He isn't that good at heading the ball. Otherwise he is class, in a few years maybe even world class. Exactly what we lacked last season upfront.

8.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 14:51:36
As a footballer alone he was a tremendous prospect who must have been a nightmare for defenders because he could go either way, run in behind and was also technically proficient enough to drop into pockets of space and create.

BUT.

That doesn't matter anymore and I don't want to see him play for us again. If the plan is to loan him to bump his price up, fine, but I don't want to see him with the Utd badge on again.

I hope he stays and plays. but I don't think he will.
Trail by social media is too common place and the cancel culture that exists in todays society disgusts me.
Most of the English media would make me want to puke.
But it seems to be great fun and entertainment watching the destruction of peoples lives for whatever reason.
He is a great prospect in terms of his football, missing the year will have set him back.
I hope a loan materialises if nothing else it will increase his sale value if it goes well.
I hope to see him back in a United shirt scoring goals, im not sure it will happen.

11.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 18:22:47
Had the potential to be one of the best around. Can score with his left or right foot and has a good burst of pace.

He had a trial by social media and in the eyes of the law he isn't guilty. No matter what people's opinions are he is a young lad and the club have a duty of care towards him.

A loan abroad for 6 months would be a good decision, get him playing football and then bring him back in January.

12.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 18:49:58
He’s not been charged. I heard the recording and it wasn’t pretty. But technically he’s innocent, won’t stop the fans giving him dogs abuse,
But he was a good footballer. Now he’s a father.

13.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 18:56:12
Not guilty and innocent are not the same thing.

14.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 19:34:24
There’s more than enough precedent out there (including with our own players) to bring him back no problem.

United can’t win in this situation and I’m glad I’m not involved in such a decision.

15.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 19:54:11
Dropped charges does not equal innocence.

He was, perhaps still is, a very talented footballer, and sure many footballers are probably just as awful, but for those of you who know what happened, would it really be so easy to cheer him on and take pride in him playing for your club?
There's been a speculative shadow over partey, and that's already weird enough, but once you know you can't unknow. I think you will, and probably should, sell him on.

16.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 20:11:25
Of course he can come back, but only if he has actually addressed his behaviour, and we'll probably never know what went on or goes on now.

The other issue with him is that he iss allegedly somewhat up his own arse and just generally not a very nice bloke. Just rumours and hearsay but I've heard it a lot. Not sure how that works in the dressing room in terms of team spirit. It was reported some players were unhappy with how the club have treated him so maybe it was overstated.

Great player, but something of a prat.

17.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 20:51:18
Said it before and I'll say it again. NO ONE cared that CR7 had paid some woman off. that's guilt but he sells shirts!

18.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 21:37:36
Sir Wenger,

Genuine question. What were your thoughts on Partey still playing every week? As he is pretty much in the exact same boat. I like many others saw the messages between him and his ex.

19.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 22:22:18
As a player he had lots of promise that if realised would take him to the world class bracket. Quick, technical, two footed and clinical in front of goal. A player that would grow into a 25-30 goal a season forward whether that was played through the middle or from the right.

However, that was still only potential. He has yet to realise that potential.

He has now had a year out, and whether he can get back on track on the pitch will very much depend on his mental strength and his dedication. He will have to work twice as hard to make up for a lost year of football. While he can expect lots of pressure, and negativity aimed at him in stadiums, in the media and online.

He'll need a lot of resilience to over come all of that and stand a chance of reaching his potential.

However, you cannot separate the player from the man. Maybe he could go on to be a world class striker, but I don't want that to be at our club. I don't want us associated with a player with that sort of reputation.

Physical, emotional, mental and sexual abuse of women is abhorrent, and I cannot stand it.

I don't want him anywhere near our club.

20.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 23:42:12
Tricky one to answer really Caolon. I have not seen any messages, will look for them now, but there has been the notion that some serious charges might be getting brought against him for a while now. For parts of last season he was immense, undroppable (before the injury), but i found it quite sour having him in the team all the same, and I've kinda been hoping they will quietly ship him out this summer. i'm really not a fan of men that abuse women, don't enjoy them walking free and earning millions, and it's quite weird having them associated with 'my' club. But I suppose what troubles me equally is how many of these professional footballers past and present have done exactly the same thing only we haven't yet heard about it.

21.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 23:42:52
And well said, Shappy.

22.) 14 Jul 2023
14 Jul 2023 23:46:22
Cantona kung-fu kicked a fan with a football boot on, nearly went to prison and then gave a random speech about seagulls following a trawler and we all love him. I know it's not exactly the same circumstances but he was found guilty in a court of law. Greenwood wasn't. Everyone deserves a second chance is the point.

23.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 01:23:45
Danny, I fundamentally disagree with the idea that everyone deserves a second chance.

Second chances are earned though owning up to your mistake, taking responsibility for it, showing genuine remorse and not just remorse for getting caught, and by showing a willingness to learn from your errors and to change for the better.

If you're not doing all of that then you aren't worthy of a second chance as really all you're giving them is the chance to do the same thing again and cause more hurt and upset.

24.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 07:05:41
Danny are you comparing what greenwood did to what cantona did? Cantona did what he did because of what a scumbag was saying and for that I applaud him!
Ridiculous comparing the two! I applaud cantona for that, I despise what greenwood did, I want our club to show an example to our young fans like my son whose ten that this is not how you behave and is not acceptable.

25.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 07:19:01
Shappy,

Owning up and taking responsibility in this scenario would purely be viewed as a PR attempt to get back into the fold. We all know it. Like I say United can’t win here.

I’ve heard respected journalists say he should take a leaf out of Kobe Bryant’s book. I may be cynical but he did a damn good job with his PR team to make sure he was remembered for his on court performances, rather than terrible acts.

The same happened with CR7.

I’m saying this now so I’m not being confused with my point. I hate greenwood, I think he’s horrid. However, there are 100s of examples of athletes who recover from allegations of his nature and not a word is said really. We’ve had some at our club, countless in other sports as well.

Any decision made here will be a business decision and nothing else.

26.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 09:27:54
Chris, I won't defend what Cantona did, you can't react like that no matter what someone has said. Especially when you're a role model and there are cameras beaming everything live around the globe.

It was madness and a rush of blood to the head. Stupid and not acceptable and he deserved his ban.

You can't go around assaulting people because they said nasty words to you.

That said there can be no parallel drawn between Cantona and Greenwood.

One had a mad moment of stupidity, the other systematically abused someone over a long period of time. It was cold and calculated.

The two things are very different. Both unacceptable still, but what Greenwood has done is much much worse.

27.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 10:39:57
Caolan, the cynic in me tends to agree. That said maybe the best PR is to just keep everything as quiet as they can and not put the whole situation under the spotlight and invite debate and discussion on what will be a polarising subject. It would cast a shadow over next season and be a massive distraction. The players will be repeatedly put on the spot and asked their opinion on it.

For all we know he may have taken responsibility, owned it, showing genuine remorse and undertaking counselling and getting professional help to deal with everything. It could be a genuine wake up moment for him and could be the moment he makes positive changes. That wouldn't rule out the suffering he has caused, but it would be a step in the right direction. If he has done that then he is entitled to a second chance.

However, I can understand why he and the club wouldn't necessarily want to broadcast that to the world and invite that debate to their door. Ultimately leaving us totally unaware of what has transpired. Which maybe we should be kept in the dark about a persons private life. Modern society seems to feel it has a right to know the inner most working of any famous persons life. We don't.

The best solution is probably a loan this year, and allow the takeover to take place. Then a year down the line the club can make a decision on whether to reintegrate him into the squad or move him on. Although I'm torn on whether a loan abroad is a good idea. I worry about his partner being far away from her support network with a new born child. While if Greenwood is receiving help that will be harder to give him that support abroad. That said a year focusing on his football without the UK media spotlight might be what he needs.

Ultimately its a very complex situation with no easy answers where every option will be divisive. Due to my life experiences I don't want him at the club and it will leave a very sour taste in my mouth if he ends up staying. But that's personal to me, everyone has different experiences and different opinions.

28.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 11:16:49
The uncomfortable truth is that he is an outstanding talent that would fetch £100 million plus in today's market easily .
On a personal note I hope to never see him in a united shirt again, however the club won't just throw away that kind of money and I fully expect him to be re-intergrated into the squad.

Cant lie, it will leave a nasty taste in my mouth.

29.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 12:36:00
I agree Deano, but I don’t think he will be able to cope with the pressure either. His actions show that he is incapable of keeping temper in check, and is capable of committing acts of horrific violence. Having every set of supporters in the country, and every opposition team targeting you week in week out is monumental pressure. Especially when a proportion of your own club’s support want you out of the club too. I can’t see him coping and honestly hope his career never recovers.

Comparing it to Cantona is nonsense. Cantona reacted once in a hostile environment against someone shouting abuse at him. It was a mistake and he was appropriately punished. Greenwood abused the person he claims to love the most in the world over a long period, physically, sexually and emotionally. The evidence was laid out for the world to see, but he has received no appropriate punishment. The club should have nothing to do with a man like that.

30.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 12:46:41
I have a 19 year old son and he is still immature. I didn't grow up until my late 20s. Greenwood thought he was a gangster, hanging around with similar types and thinks he's a big man. Like Ravel Morrison. Truth is he's an immature kid trying to act the big man. He's a dumbass and has made some dumb mistakes. But he is a kid and United should back him and rehabilitate him. His personal life seems to have recovered. They have had a baby, married or soon to be. The club needs to stay close to him, if he does anything even close to this again. GONE!

31.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 14:51:20
I'm not having that Syd. I was an immature kid once. He wasn't showing off to his mates, he was treating another human being with utter contempt and disregard. He abused a young woman. That's not being immature that's being a vile, pitiful excuse for a man.

It shows how he thinks and who he is on a base level. He shouldn't ever be near the club again. Whether he does get to represent the club again though isn't in my hands.

32.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 16:16:38
I work within the area of where he may or may not be guilty of an offence. So many people say they heard the evidence and he is guilty. I have to work on pure evidence and can any of you lot say for definite it was him on the audio? Can any of you say and prove he committed any crime? There is no evidence he committed a crime apart from his partner, could she be lying?

33.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 16:24:59
Think it's fair to say this is a divisive one :D
I really don't think Utd would have hung onto him this long unless they felt they could keep him.
You'd think it is Erik's call, and I guess he wants him around.

34.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 16:37:49
The Mason Greenwood situation is both difficult and easy. In footballing terms easy but in human terms not. Innocent and not charged with any crime, yet anyone who heard what happened would and should feel very uncomfortable, not least our female supporters and the women’s team. The club have to consider its reputation, it’s standing and how women feel about this. Adding to the complexity is the baby and clear continuity with his partner.

What about forgiveness, be kind? Recent revelations in the media, not relating to football, have brought strong reactions, yet it seems to show that suggestions of forgiveness is only for certain people, often politically based. On footballing terms, Greenwood would not be forgiven quickly because he plays for United, that extra spite, it would bring more hatred on him, more focus. Other clubs have had players who have been offensive in different ways shall we say. If he was at another club, particularly outside the UK it maybe easier to restart his career. Why should he be denied a career, earn a living? Like it or not he is innocent, never been charged and therefore some are playing the morality card, yet like I said before many only apply this to suit their own views.

Overall I think this season is too early to consider him in the shirt, a year on loan somewhere abroad would likely be best. Maybe it puts off the decision but also gives time to see whether he is worth readmitting, whether we all can accept him, because if he pulls the shirt on again we all need to accept the likely noise and get behind him. That needs more time, at least.

I wanted to write a long post about this, but Taffy summarized it quite nicely.

People saying "dropped charges does not equal innocence", but what does it equal then? Guilt?

Basically, we don't know anything, what was happening in the background of it all, but everyone seem to jump to conclusions.

Officially, charges were dropped because key witness withdrew AND new evidence came to light.
We can now guess if the witness was paid off to step down or wasn't that strong of a witness to begin with.
We can also guess what new evidence came to light, but the way it was said, the evidence would obviously clear him.
But hey, let's just jump to conclusion.

I'm not saying he is or isn't guilty, the point is that officially he isn't guilty, and not just that, the "victim" decided to jump to bed with the "abuser" not so long after the "incident", make a baby and marry him. If she thinks he is good enough for her, who am I to comment on her decisions? If she accepted him back (if the incident occured), why wouldn't fans accept him back?

Nah, I guess its better to call him names, and pretend to be in the know of what actually happened, to say he was doing it for a long time, being cold and calculated and all, though it might happened one time or didn't happen at all.

And how about a different angle? What if he was a victim of a long mental abuse, and being a kid, didn't know how to cope with it and did what he did? Would you look at the "victim" with the same eyes? What if she is a golddigger? A lot of what if, what if.

Also, I bet 99% posters did morally wrong things in their life (maybe not of the same magnitude), but still choose to preach about other people lifes. I know I loved to preach what is right and what is wrong, until I did a morally bad thing. Then I realised not everything is black and white. It shouldn't be for Greenwood either.

In the end, it actually became a long post :)

Anyway, if in the eyes of the law and her eyes he isn't guilty, why would he be guilty in my eyes?

15 Jul 2023 21:15:23
Danny, facts mate, I said to my lad earlier we still hear Adam Johnson chants at games! He will be slaughtered.

Also think we will only see if his rehabilitation is helping once he starts to play again.

I just think as a club we don't need any of this atm, may seem harsh to some but I just hope he goes and takes the darkness with him tbh.

38.) 15 Jul 2023
15 Jul 2023 21:43:47
Best thing for him is to go on loan to be playing regular football and to hopefully bump his value up so we can sell him for a decent fee.

Can’t see him ever playing for the club again - so many reasons, not to mention objections by the women’s team and be slaughtered by the crowds in every match.

Many past reports also of him being a really unpleasant person to have around the club, being nasty and demeaning to club staff and being overly arrogant and aloof, even at a young age.

Best for all parties to break ties now and move on.
