Ole did his job at the start by bringing joy back to the players and the fans. In the last 4 games however reality has hit in. Trying to play progressive pressing football with Smalling playing out from the back and a squad that's used to playing a low intensity low block has hit in. The most important issue when Mourinho was sacked hasn't been resolved and we will keep coming back to this damning reality if it is not sorted.

The recruitment of a Director of Football. When Ole was made caretaker I was happy enough with that but I was ecstatic to see that a Director of Football would be installed. To take the running of the football team off Ed Woodward could finally see our team challenging for real honours again. It hasn't happened.

If it doesn't happen soon we will keep coming back to this place of wanting more and receiving Jones, Smalling and Young. We could get lucky and win the Champions League or scrap into the top 4 but until the appointment happens we won't be anywhere near Man City or Liverpool.

Another thing to keep in mind is our players have not been conditioned to play high press attacking football. We saw it when Ole joined, we could keep the tempo up for about an hour and then recoil. And since we kept doing it with games coming thick and fast, even the 60 minutes became a problem, the exhaustion started to tell on the layers especially since some key injuries hit us.
With a proper preseason and smart buys, Ole's Utd. will start to reflect his actual team and not an inherited team which he is patching to the best of his abilities.
I do believe a DoF will be appointed and I hope that move will benefit us immensely.

2.) 09 Apr 2019 13:24:53
MBD

For sure that is the ideal. That a Director of Football comes in and sorts the squad to the way Ole wants to play. However there is just over a month left in the season and still no sign of a Director of Football. Most deals are getting done now and not in the summer. If a Director of Football doesn't come in ASAP and at least try to shape the squad the way Ole wants we are going to be left with a Superstar Ed fancies to improve the commercial end and Smalling trying to control and pass the ball. History will repeat itself if it doesn't change.

{Ed002's Note - I have explained about the Director of Football already.}

3.) 09 Apr 2019 17:16:01
Y'all getting too hung up on a director of football. Expecting someone to come in and wave a magic wand. Ain't happening. Never expected to happen this season. We couldn't get it done in 3 years so no chance in 6 months.

4.) 10 Apr 2019 07:46:41
Mort

Well then let's keep our hopes low and expect much of the same from the last 6 years.

I know it's only the Sunday Times but they're reporting that we are back in for Pepe from Lille. I think with offloading Lukaku and bringing in Pepe is a fantastic piece of business. He suits the teams new style of play brilliantly. Ole is trying to play a fluid system a little like Liverpool where there is no designated out-and-out number 9. He wants the front 3 to interchange. If that front 3 is Martial, Rashford and Pepe I think that is something to get excited about. To have Pogba and Bruno Fernandes supplying them would be outrageous! There's ifs, buts and maybes in there but I'm a football fan and ye got to dream. Greenwood is looking so good but you don't want to be banking on a 17 year to be a starter from the word go and not have top players to rotate him with. We'll wait and see but if we were to finish the window with Pepe, Bruno and Diop (prefer to get him than Maguire) that would be a fairly realistic dream window! 😎.

{Ed002's Note - Or maybe Pepe will go to Napoli.}

At least let me believe the rumours for a few hour Ed002.😅.

2.) 21 Jul 2019 12:51:38
I remember a poster on here saying Utd were going to sign 5 players.
Two Portuguese players were done deals
And Utd were well advanced in the other 3.
2 in. And nothing “on the horizon” just tabloid bs
Now, if that lawyer would like to revise his statement, as things stand, Utd are not going to add to the squad. and If lulu and pogs do go.
We are going to be in deep do dah mid season.

Plastic,

Get a grip.

4.) 21 Jul 2019 13:37:15
OH MY GOD, WE’RE DOOMED. I can’t believe we’ve only signed 2 players and the season is nearly upon us. It’s a disgrace, I for one am incredibly nervous and have had to be medicated to stop me having a full on breakdown. What is Ed, the Board, Ole, the cleaner playing at? Nobody wants to come to us any more, we’ll be lucky to get 6th, might even be fighting relegation the way things are going. Aaaaarrrrggggghhhhhhh.

5.) 21 Jul 2019 14:44:46
Just for the record "plasticjock" is a great name. Especially for dyslexics like me.

Who read the "plastic" part, then flip the "cj" to "jc" then read the second part🤣🤣🤣.

So it's looking more and more that our transfer window signings will be, Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Longstaff (maybe), Bruno, James and maybe another striker if Lukaku leaves (likely) . If you were to tell me that they would be the signings along with Rashford, Tuanzebe and possibly De Gea signing new contracts I would be delighted. Delighted! I know things might not 100% work out that way but it's looking more and more like it. I'd still love to get rid of a lot of the players we don't need but find impossible to shift (Darmian, Jones, Rojo, Young and Sanchez) but by and large I'm very happy with the way things are going this transfer window. We need to be positive. There was been so much negativity, especially in this forum. We're not a top 2 or even top 3 club at the monent. We need to taper our expectations. We want a hard working team, playing youth, trying to play progressive attacking football to get the fans excited next season. There will be a few downs next season as we don't have an outstanding or complete squad (yet) . Challenging for top 4 while changing the playing style and personel is the maximum of my expectations and I'd hope most supporters will follow suit. It will create less heartache and something to build on for the season after, instead of jumping from season to season with the same high expectations.

The two players we have signed look decent. AWB, in particular, solves a big problem in our defence.

If Maguire comes in, he'll be an improvement in defence. Not an £80m improvement, but better than what we have. Bruno looks an excellent player too.

My biggest concern is that we haven’t moved on Pogba and Lukaku. When players make it clear that they don’t want to be at a club, there’s no point dragging it out. Especially players like Pogba who have influence in the dressing room. If these players are still in the squad when the window closes, the start of our season is going to be massively disrupted. The club needs to move them on while they can be replaced.

2.) 15 Jul 2019 14:18:14
I can see some players leaving on deadline day when buying clubs get desperate to recruit and we get desperate to ship them out.

What are your thoughts on right wing?

A balance is needed as we've been so one dimensional for a long time - the left side. It's generally Lingard or Mata who drift into the middle or are tracking back. We need someone to hold that side and attack. Not many are jumping out that are plausible. Sancho isn't coming, Pepe looks like he's Bayern bound and not many outside of that excite. I know he has his injury problems and we have enough overpaid underperforming players but a loan move for Bale could be very beneficial for all parties. The figures quoted atm is £30m plus pay all his wages. If a deal could be struck for literally half that then I think it's a risk worth taking. He's a big game player, someone who has stood up to criticism and can take the flak and scoring burden off our young and underperforming forwards. A front 3 of Martial, Rashford and Bale would excite me for one. If Bale has Bruno in midfield and Wan-Bissaka behind him putting in the defensive work. Bale can be left to wreck havoc from the right hand side. Would like to know everyone's thoughts on this because every other position that needs to be filled has clear candidates. The right side of our attack, not so much.

Bale would be a disaster.

Despite not being in his manager’s plans, he wants to stay in Madrid for lifestyle reasons.
Despite his form being terrible for the last two seasons, he still expects massive wages.
Despite his appalling injury record, he still disobeys doctor’s orders and continues playing golf when he’s out.

We would be spending millions on a player who doesn’t want to be here, and hasn’t played consistently well for years. And if he did have a great season for us, we’d have to pay a huge amount of money to sign him. It’d be like we learned nothing from the Sanchez debacle.

2.) 10 Jun 2019 14:32:40
I think there are differing views on who we should sign. i think it does depend on which formation we choose. it seems 4-2-2-2 is a favourite of ole, as shappy has alluded to before. I think sancho is the main option, but as you've said, he isn't coming this season. so the question is do we go for an experienced short-term fix, or do we look further down our list of options to see who is a good fit.

Lets start at the experienced options. The obvious one is Bale. The man divides fans completely on this site. I can see arguments for both sides. The negatives being the guy has hardly managed to stay fit for the last few years, he is likely to cost a bomb and there are worries that he may end up another sanchez esque signing. The positives are that if he stays fit he is a genuine world class talent. That is a big if though. I think if it is a loan for a year or two, like James at Bayern, or a small fee (unlikely), then i would most certainly take a punt on him. He could even play centrally or as a striker if Lukaku leaves. If he can stay fit he would transform us. I don't recall Ed saying we have any interest though.

The next option is Zaha. I am actually a big fan of his, I love his directness and trickery. He has also added goals and assists to him game, and he loves to beat a man. If we are to sign Wan Bissaka then he would be an obvious signing imo. They have a chemistry and understanding already and could slot in seamlessly on our right flank. I think he is ready for the step back up. It did not work out the first time, but he is more mature and developed than when he joined. The fee will likely be very big but he is premier league proven. He is my pick.

The younger or potential options now. Kluivert seems to be a favourite of ole. Thought he was great at Ajax and the move to Roma has been a bit of a disaster for him. Mind you, a lot of Monchi's buys there have not worked out. I think he is a talented player but is not ready to hold down the RW position. It would be a risk and I would only bring him in if we signed say Bale.

Pepe is the next one. Price is extortionate and Ed has said there are doubts over his attitude and whether he can step up. I like him and think he would be a good buy. Lozano is an interesting one. Everytime I have watched him i have been very impressed. He is quick, skilful and has an end product. I know he usually plays on the left but i am sure i have seen him operate on the right before. Seems Napoli have him all but tied up. Seems Insigne may be on his way. Finally, could we see James there? He has already signed and although he can play on the left, could we see him used on the right? Interested to see what happens.

I would most likely go for Zaha. I think he can make an instant impact, premier league proven and has just come off his best season goals wise (I believe) . If not, I would take a punt on a loan for Bale. If it works out, then he propels us up the table. If it does not, we shake hands at the end of the deal and part ways. Hopefully Sancho comes in after that.

3.) 10 Jun 2019 14:34:22
With the fees being quoted along with his wages and his worrying injury record recently, I would stay clear of him. Also, there was a rumour that we rejected a cash plus Perisic for Lukaku, if that's true it establishes the fact we are going after young hungry players and building for the future rather than any quick short term fixes.

4.) 10 Jun 2019 14:46:03
I would love us to get Sancho but as per the Eds it's not happening. Bale is following a path I think Olly wants to get away from so would sooner the place be split between Lingard and Chong if we can't get the right person in. Or switch to 2 up front with attack midfielder behind avoiding need for RW.
I am not averse to a Zaha if the manager sees it as who he wants. But as per Liverpool recently. If Sancho is your man long term and no one else then work the rest of the team, get top 4 and come in for him again next year.

5.) 10 Jun 2019 15:47:37
If we can't get Zaha I'd just put Lukaku on the Right Wing. In my opinion he's better than anyone else in the squad currently for the right hand side (apart from James who we are yet to see on the right) as he can bully most fullbacks, actually has the space on the wing to get up to speed, can put in a surprisingly good cross and will actually win headers on the wing that the striker can run on. I'd then have martial in his position upfront as martial's hold up play, finishing and heading accuracy is better. Then I'd have rashford on the left as he can cut in and shoot, as well as beat a man. I'm actually surprised Lukaku hasn't been utilised more on the right, I remember him ruining kolasinac in the FA cup, providing two very nice assists and working hard with his tracking back. Bale should be avoided, we need to continue with the philosophy of buying young talent and building rather than short term fixes like Zlatan, Matic, Sanchez, who haven't really worked out. If lukaku can be sold I'd invest in zaha rather than striker and just chuck martial upfront as I don't think there are many strikers much better than martial out there for the money. Can anyone give me their two cents on Sebastien Haller?

6.) 10 Jun 2019 16:24:37
Personally I'm torn. In my opinion we don't have any wingers in our squad, left or right wing. Martial and Rashford are strikers. Mata Sanchez, Lingard are all No.10's. Valencia, Young and Dalot are full backs.

We have just signed Daniel James who is an out and out winger, although he is better on the left.

We could do with a true RW, but then that depends on whether we intend to play a system that uses wingers. The fact we only have one and a young unproven one at this level might suggest we aren't going to play with traditional wingers as a first choice plan.

7.) 10 Jun 2019 16:27:49
I'm more centre-left to be honest.

8.) 10 Jun 2019 19:14:06
Maybe we go more with split strikers and Jessesillio Lingardinho through the middle.

9.) 10 Jun 2019 19:15:05
Please OGS, stay clear of Bale. Our scouts must have tracked a right winger other than Bale! Sancho is the obvious one, but if he's not coming, then we need to find an alternative that will do the job other than Bale. Also, it depends if we want to play with two wingers.
Failing finding a right winger, we can try something radical and give Chong a run. He's better than Lingard, Mata in that position.

10.) 10 Jun 2019 22:20:24
Sancho ain't happening so was just wondering if a cheapish one year loan deal for Bale could be struck would be people be excited. Most say no! I can see why for sure. Not sure what tactic Ole will play this year but liked the way he used a variety last season. Mason Greenwood would be a wicked wildcard out on the right. Had a fantastic game there on the last day of the season versus Cardiff. He's so unpredictable with being ambidextrous and agile. Would like to see him given plenty of chances out there if someone isn't brought in. If no one steps up this year then go all out for Sancho next summer. IF we qualify for the Champions League!

22 Mar 2019 00:09:35
With all the injuries we've had - 12 first team players at one stage. Now again Rashford, Martial and Matic have had to pull out of their international commitments. It's just a thought but I wonder is the adaptation to the new style (pressing and quicker transitions) under Ole taking it's toll on the players physically? That they are not used to playing this way and not usually trained to do it. I'm delighted we have changed to this style but it just looks like it's taking it's toll on the players. I would be over the moon if we could stumble into the Champions League next season anyway, shape or form. Get a few strong signings in key positions (CB, RB, CM, RW) to suit the style and a full preseason under our belts then have a proper go at it next year!

Yes Killerscones, after Jose's reign, we are starting to outrun our opponents.
It will take time to build the endurance in our players.
Next season, I feel, the players will be better equipped to adjust to this play style.

Dybala signing sounds like a wet dream. But so did Di Maria and Falcao. If he wants to fight for a struggling team then great signing. If not, I'd rather him not get in the way of a player developing like Greenwood.

Love the positivity lads. Geeesshh. Ole is our manager. He will not be leaving in the immediate future. Why not get behind our manager who has his first transfer window to sort out this mess of a squad. Ole isn't on his own here either. Do you not think players with the right attitude would like to work with Mike Phelan and Michael Carrick? The high profile manager (Van Gaal and Mourinho) hasn't worked. How about trying a club man with the right management team around him?! Getting sick of the negativity.

Great signing if completed. Just shows the shift at the club that started last summer. People forget but the signings of Fred (didn't have an exceptional season but the right idea) and Dalot along with James this summer and AWB shows what direction the club is taking with its' signings. Young and ambitious players who want to play for the club. More of the same please. It's not July yet and already two exciting signings. A centre half and two central midfielders then we're laughing. The signings from the past 12 months shows that Ed isn't in charge of what players to get and long may it last 🙌.

From looking at Diop he looks like the player you wish Smalling was. He has all the defensive attributes but is good on the ball. Not elite on the ball yet but very solid. I think Tuanzebe needs the year long loan to a Premier League team like Villa to see if he's able to cut it then can be an exciting addition to our backline next season. Would be a lot happier with the club spending £60m on Diop than £80-90m on Maguire. Hard to pick between the two right now ability wise, then think of where Maguire was at when he was Diop's age (22yo) . A backline of Shaw, Diop, Lindelof (Capt, hopefully) and AWB is alright a little inexperienced but hella exciting! All very good at actual defending while being confident and comfortable on the ball. We live in hope.

If Pogba goes and he is replaced with let's say Bruno Fernandes, Rabiot and AWB for the same money then I think it's good business. Look what Liverpool have done, especially with the Coutinho money. It's about building a team, not having a couple of superstars. Pogba is the icing on the cake we don't need right now, that will hopefully come in a couple of years when we have a hard working settled team. Hopefully.

Little fantasy here.

Ole seems to be making the right types of signings and directing the club in at least the right direction.

How about.

Ole becomes Director of Football and Poch becomes Manager

Won't happen. But sounds good!

Just looking at this thread shows how devisive a player Pogba is. You look at him being 6 foot 3' and think he should be a commanding midfielder like a Viera. He is far from it however. What he is is a luxury player. If the team is set up around him with hard working talented players like at Juve and France then he is a fantastic luxury player. Brilliant touch, dribbling, shooting and passing. Manchester United however are not in a position to have luxury players. 10 years ago for sure but not now. He is fantastically talented but a luxury player and not a leader we need right now to pull up this struggling team. It's a pity because I was so excited when he came first but it hasn't worked out and won't unless we pull these hard working talented players out of somewhere.

Be great to get an experienced striker in that our younger strikers Rashford, Greenwood and Martial (hard to even class as young now, should really be doing the business regularly) could learn from while also taking the burden off them. Maybe a Cavani or someone along them lines.

Mate get your head out of the fire. Better than Fred? He's been one of maybe only 3 players to have played decent the last 10 games of the season. TFM couldn't get a look in at Fulham.
