According to Sky Sports news, Spurs deal to sign Moussa Dembele from Fulham is off. I really think we should move for this lad, he could be a real superstar. He actually reminds me a great deal of Louis Saha, and look where he came from.

1.) 31 Jan 2016 22:31:25
Seems like a relatively risk free and small outlay for someone with so much potential.

2.) 31 Jan 2016 22:49:27
Yes - £5 million and they want him till the summer so they stay up. No brainer for me.

3.) 31 Jan 2016 23:57:37
I think the fact Spurs have allegedly pulled out of this transfer combined with WBA signing a player on loan from them hints strongly at Berahino getting his move to Spurs. This makes them a real threat to get a champions league spot instead of us as they will have a decent striker for squad rotation.

28 Jan 2016 22:53:12
Finally a rumour! Musa - 23 year old Nigerian striker with electric pace. Did well against us in the CL, can play left too.

Anything in it?

1.) 28 Jan 2016 23:51:13
Last I saw Leicester were haggling with cska over him, country captain at 23 I think I read as well.

2.) 29 Jan 2016 08:23:46
Similar player to Mane, but would be much cheaper. Small, lightening quick, and will stretch the pitch with the speed and timing of his runs.

Not world class, but a very good player. Probably about the best you can expect to sign in January. Which tends to be a time very very few world class players are available.

If we could bring in Garay as well then it would be a decent January.

3.) 29 Jan 2016 08:51:07
Was really impressive vs us in the Champions league, believe he was their main threat. I would love to see someone as fast as him on our wings, we've missed that explosive pace which just catches everyone off guard.

4.) 29 Jan 2016 10:02:34
A bit of pace would be very welcome. Is Garay still an option Shappy. Was almost a certainty one time then the rumour faded away.

5.) 29 Jan 2016 10:02:46
Ideally it would mean tht Martial could move up top and then Musa left if it happened. I doubt our interest is serious though - we don't like bargains.

6.) 29 Jan 2016 10:40:58
Pace is certainly what we need, Inaki Williams is worth a look too. Williams has 8 goals in 12 games playing On the right he can play ST and left too.

7.) 29 Jan 2016 10:51:48
Darren, I don't know if Garay is still a target. But for me he is strong in the air, great in the tackle, a very good passer and has experience. In january its always difficult to sign the big name players. But Garay ticks all the boxes and I would imagine would be much easier to sign than someone like Stones.

No.7, I wouldn't say we don't like bargins. I would say a combination of clubs charging us more because of our world wide image and our current cheif executives obsession with proving himself by signing a big name signing. But on the flip side both Darmian and Blind could be considered bargins in todays market.

Rewz, I like the look of Williams. I think he could become a great little player. But I don't think he is ready to step up just yet and Bilbao are not known for being an easy team to negotiate with.

8.) 29 Jan 2016 11:11:44
Williams has just signed a sizeable new contract too with a big release clause. Athletic aren't the best of clubs to deal with.

Garay would be a decent signing. Bit similar to Smalling and Rojo though.

9.) 29 Jan 2016 12:47:25
No.7,

Similar to Smalling and Rojo in what way? I would say them 2 players aren't that similar.

10.) 29 Jan 2016 13:11:30
I saw earlier he was 25.

Also given they want 23 million hardly cheap.

11.) 29 Jan 2016 13:34:59
Similar in that they aren't particularly hard, mouthy centre backs. Smalling and Rojo both try to play out from the back, sometimes run forwards but neither are a great organiser like a Vidic was. That is what we are missing.

12.) 29 Jan 2016 13:39:24
I agree that is what we are missing, I must have missed Rojo playing it out from the back though, he just hoofs it forward more often than not!

13.) 29 Jan 2016 13:57:06
In fairness, who knows what Rojo does - he's always injured anyway.

14.) 29 Jan 2016 16:47:08
He's 23 Mort, 24 in October. Any deal is apparently expected to be in the 18m region.

Like I said he is very similar to Mane, just without the premier league experience.

No.7, I wouldn't liken Garay to Smalling or Rojo at all. Garay is an excellent passer and a great reader of the game. Both of Smalling and Rojo are weak in their passing ability as well as their positioning and reading. Garay isn't world class, but he has the experience we currently lack. He is also more vocal and is an organiser at the back.

I haven't heard of any recent interest in him, but I do think he ticks a lot of the boxes, and could be brought in during January.

15.) 29 Jan 2016 16:59:14
He is African he could be 60 and we'd never know?

16.) 29 Jan 2016 17:14:20
Shappy, my point is that Smalling, Garay or Rojo are all not particularly combative. Our best partnership was Ferdinand and Vidic. Vidic got stuck in and was the typical aggressive centre back, Ferdinand was the more serene player. Smalling, Garay and Rojo 'try' to be the serene player but aren't, and they are definitely not the combative type.

17.) 29 Jan 2016 18:30:45
No.7, people tend to over simplify things. There are two types of CB.

The first type is the one who steps forward and engages the opposition. Quite often at least in the past known as the aggressor or tough tackling CB. The other is the sweeper, the one who sits back directs and organises the defence and cleans up if the first defensive action isn't successful.

I would say that both Smalling and Rojo tend to fall in the later catagory. There reading of the game isn't strong enough to sit back, nor are they solid enough passer. And neither are great organisers.

They are both big strong lads, with plenty of pace. There for they are better suited to being the agressor, the one who steps in and engages the opposition first. Smalling isn't an aggressive player and Rojo is abit of a loose cannon and jumps in too soon or when the ball isn't there to be won.

Thats why LvG has partnered Smalling with Blind who is probably one of our best passers, and has great reading of the game. He is also vocal and organises the defence. The problem is he lack strength and pace and get exposed in the EPL.

Garay is a stronger quicker version of Blind.

18.) 29 Jan 2016 19:10:35
I have to disagree Shappy. To say people over simplify centre backs and then say there are two types is a contradiction in terms. Smalling is your standard centre back, Rojo is a more attacking centre back and tries more on the ball. Blind isn't a centre back at all.

19.) 29 Jan 2016 19:10:35

20.) 29 Jan 2016 23:22:34
Or to put it another way, Smalling is told to attack the ball whilst the ball playing centre half, who gives his colleague no help at all, is allowed to not do his primary job (defend) and let Mike take all the shit when it goes wrong!

I'd just like to make a point about football these days in general, about us indirectly but mostly about Spurs.

I cannot believe that Pochettino has left Alli, Lamela, Dier and Kane out of this first leg. Dortmund is an hour away, it is no more exhausting to get to Dortmund than it is to Sunderland from London. Their team is also incredibly youthful so should have bags of energy and most importantly they could play blindfolded on the weekend and still beat Villa.

If I was a Spurs fan I would be fuming at what I would say is the raising of the white flag in this leg.

1.) 10 Mar 2016 19:29:19
Going for the league, Europa was a back up and probably objective at the start of the season. I bet they never anticipated a shot at the title this season and CL football is almost guaranteed. So why bother with the Mickey Mouse cup like we have to?

They have played a lot of games this season so it kind of makes sense to me, but still it is a bit feeble.

2.) 10 Mar 2016 22:15:37
At the end of the day a trophy is a trophy, even if it is a 'Mickey Mouse' cup as you call it Beast. Would rather win the Europa League than go out by playing a weakened team and then not win the Prem, which is very possible at the moment. Should compete for everything as much as possible in my opinion.

3.) 10 Mar 2016 22:17:42
Not to dispel your argument, but to be fair, Alli was suspended and Dier complained of cramp after the Arsenal game, so I assume he was feeling the amount of games played recently. On one hand I agree, this is a chance for a European cup and that should be grabbed with both hands, however, I know that I would much rather win the league this year than the Europa and I don't doubt that if Spurs go on and do it, this will all be forgotten. I just feel for the travelling fans who presumably paid a lot of money to attend that game.

4.) 10 Mar 2016 22:42:28
They've got champions league football in the bag and are 100% in the running for the league, why risk the injuries?

5.) 10 Mar 2016 23:04:35
Why not win both? Football is about winning as many trophies as you can.

6.) 10 Mar 2016 23:06:45
Without doubt the worst utd squad I have seen in my lifetime. The most boring also. Not fit to wear the shirt.

7.) 11 Mar 2016 07:56:26
No7 I agree. If United were in Spurs' position I'd be fuming if we gave up a trophy just to focus on the league, especially if they don't win it. Also, winning any trophy is a sign of how good your squad is, surely managers want to prove they've built the best possible squad?

8.) 11 Mar 2016 09:26:12
That is the united mentality of SAF era which was why not win all of them, most teams including spurs are delighted to be in the running to win the league which is a rarity and hence will dump competitions like Europa for the sake of winning the league.

10 Mar 2016 15:13:44
Just read that Fosu-Mensah is unable to play tonight as he was not originally registered in the squad and is not considered to be home grown.

Seems a shame, we need bodies.

Any thoughts on the team this evening?

No.7

1.) 10 Mar 2016 15:33:46
That is a shame No7. Personally I think we need a lot of energy in the central areas as Liverpool do have decent movement up top. I'd have Blind at LB tonight with Rojo central. No Carrick please, waste of space for the game this evening in all likelihood, Coutinho, Firmino, Llalana will glide past him.

Really looking forward to it. If we go and attack I fancy us against their defence.

2.) 10 Mar 2016 15:51:39
it was always lvg plan to have a small squad and play the kids?

3.) 10 Mar 2016 16:09:32
We could have put him on at right back when we needed a goal in the last 10 minutes, shame.

4.) 10 Mar 2016 16:15:05
Exactly Jred - If Rashford was not HG he wouldn't be able to play as well, the guy is a joke.

5.) 10 Mar 2016 16:21:50
Where's that stick gone? Beat Beat Beat.

6.) 10 Mar 2016 16:26:50
Exactly right jred. I have always believed that he is doing this out of necessity than because he wants to.

7.) 10 Mar 2016 17:22:35
Rashford didn't score last time, we should drop him.

09 Mar 2016 14:44:38
Like someone else said earlier, I don't want to do a Ronnie, but I wanted to ask any of the ed's or any poster in here why no top club (in particular Manchester United) has moved for Yarmolenko? He seems a consistent performer and a dangerous player who, at 25 has not hit his peak yet.

Could be a smart move for a right sided player around £25m with a strong left foot like a Robben.

No.7

1.) 09 Mar 2016 15:28:26
I think it is a combination of a a lack of experience in a top league, his club wanting a very large fee and he has been happy to remain in his home country so has never really pushed for a move.

I think he could be a gem of a player and would suit the EPL, but you wouldn't want to spend too much as he has never played week in week out at that level.

2.) 09 Mar 2016 16:40:55
Given the amount of money that we need to spend on a striker, central midfielder and at least one centre back, I think he would be really worth a punt at the right price. A good player, but not a huge name that would totally rule out the likes of Lingard from progressing.

06 Mar 2016 11:15:50
Very quick question guys. Do you remember a few months ago, Tuanzebe was named on the bench. Given the amount of youngster we have played recently, where has he disappeared to?

06 Mar 2016 10:51:46
I'd like to add to this Jose Mourinho youth debate and show that him not giving chances is nonsense.

Did you know that he brought 20 youth team players into the first team setup at Real Madrid at one point? That does not include Raphael Varane and does include names like Morata. He has handed less young players starts in the BPL, but who says they are good enough. He has used Loftus-Cheek and a few others.

The point is, young players should only be played if they are deemed to be good enough - not every youth player has a divine right to play in the firs team - but the better ones should. If he took over I'd see no reason why Varela, Mensah, Rashford etc. would be given a chance.

Largely agree Shane. I too think Shane will be closely looked at. i'd like another young eh get, Bernardeshi is popular at the moment and I like the fact that he is very creative and cuts inside like Robben. Saúl I think might've the midfield target, rumoured to have rejected a contract too.

I also think that we need another striker despite the emergence of Rashford. Someone young like Morata or Icardi who can be rotated I and out the side. Last point, I'd love to see Memphis tried on the right also, think he could do well.

All I know is what I've read. SAF tried to sign him as a 17 year old but failed. He plays off the right but is left footed like Robben. So he would be a right sided option.

I watched the Dortmund game first yesterday and the difference in ability between them and Spurs (a weakened Spurs) was huge. They would wipe the floor with us, and Liverpool for that matter - and under Klopp, I can see Liverpool getting to their level and beyond.

They don't have massive names with massive ego's. The biggest is probably Aubemeyang, Reus and Hummels. They have bough smart, Mikhitaryan is their biggest signing and is still under £30 million and is a million times the player Mata is.

We need a complete overhaul, and we are kidding ourselves if we think otherwise.

Starting in the boardroom, we need someone to come in that will allow Woodward to step back from the footballing side of things and focus on the business. Our recruitment has been pretty terrible - is this the scouts fault? The managers? Fellaini, Rojo, Schweinsteiger : (, Di Maria because he never wanted to join etc. have all been very poor signings. I'd include Mata in that too. Similarly, what are the coaching staff coaching? We brought in a fitness team that injured everyone last season, we have no direction, seemingly no game plan and no passion or leadership from the sidelines.

Looking at that team yesterday, I think only two or three of them starting the game will be here next year under the new manager (hopefully Mourinho) . We would be lost without De Gea. Martial has great potential but I think Scholes is right, he should be second choice striker and play wide while he develops. Memphis has potential but is no where near ready as the ed said - but we shouldn't have to put all our eggs in one young basket. In previous years the likes of Ronaldo have been eased into the side with cameo appearances here and there. Schneiderlin I maintain is a good player, but is not creative, nor is Fellaini. Schneiderlin needs to play alongside a creative midfielder, something to buy I think and use Herrera more. Other than De Gea, Martial, Schneiderlin and probably Varela can you really say that anyone in that team is good enough to be starting for Manchester United?

I'd say not. Memphis as I said needs time, Blind is a utility man that you have on the bench to do specific jobs. Carrick is way past his best now, Schweinsteiger also but I wouldn't want the dressing room to lose both figures. Smalling is proving how poor he actually is. Rojo is terrible and doesn't have a best position. Mata is so slow it's like he is running in treacle, compare his performance to Mikhitaryan for Dortmund, the difference is scary. Elsewhere the likes of Lingard aren't Manchester United quality starters. Jones is a permanent sick note, McNair I don't think has enough quality.

It really is sad, after three years of 'rebuilding' we only have De Gea, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Martial and arguably Rooney (depending on your opinion of him) that are good enough to start. I don't honestly see how Blind is a better centre back than Evans, Darmian is no better than Rafael, and can you say that right now Memphis or Lingard offer more than Nani used to? We still don't have a Scholes-esque player, we have no right winger of any significance and no striker to lead the line - an look how much we have spent.

This may sound like a bad reaction to a bad performance. But I don't think anything that I have said is unfair, or untrue. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
