Hello all, I have been a long time reader but never previously posted to the group.
It seems to me that Ole is wedded to a 4-3-3 formation and to make that work we fall into 2 groups.
Group A want a high energy disrupter with a keen football intelligence to cover in front of the back four, ie a Bissouma or Ndidi
Group B want a footballing quarterback to launch attacks with precision delivery and generally keep the play moving ie Neves
I would suggest we have a player in the squad who offers both roles in one. Bruno
What are your collective thoughts on playing him in that deeper role with Pogba and DVB ahead.

Welcome. I don't see it myself he is too good in front of goal, its all opinions of course and others might agree with you.

Rice at 100 million plus might not be the answer, Ndidi is a great option but I think Leicester will see him as an 80 mill player even if they were open to selling him.

If we were to have a clearout 12 months from now of Mata, Matic, Fred, Perreria (permanently), and 3 possibles (Pogba, DVDB, Lingard) then at the risk of jumping on the flavour of the month bandwagon I would say Bissouma if he continues his great form and Neves would give us everything we need with PL experience . and for around 100 million .

If Pogba were to stay then along with McTom Bissouma and Neves you have all the combinations you will ever need. Quality over quantity.

I think we may need both depending on who we play. We aren’t good or mature enough to impose our style of play on teams yet.

If we are playing Man City and see less of the ball then a bissouma will be more effective than Neves. There is a reason Fred looks good when he doesn’t have the ball and is only chasing down spaces.

If we are playing teams who sit back then Neves is best as he can do what Fabinho does albeit not as well, but well enough.

There is also a third type of midfielder we lack - the ball carrier. Once who can dribble with the ball when the long ball isn’t on and create space for the attack. Pogba tries but his frame makes him susceptible to being tackled easily. Someone like Bellingham would be ideal.

In an ideal world we would have a midfield squad of neves bissouma mctominay bruno and Bellingham. Three of which start every game based on what’s needed.

If Garner develops well we may not need Neves. If Mctominay is coached better ( not sure how) we could have a decent Bissouma alternative.

So I would suggest we go all out for Bellingham, maybe send donny the other way as for some reason Ole doesn’t fancy him.

I'm not sure you get the best from Bruno by playing him deeper. He does for Portugal and his performances for his country tend to be less impactful than they are for United. So much so that it was the basis for the idea that Bruno and Ronaldo couldn't play well together in the same team.

Personally I'd go all in for Ruben Neves, he would enable us to play someone more defensive and dynamic like McTominay alongside side him in the games against sides that will try and outplay us, or at least match us. Or maybe someone like Donny against the sides that will just sit deep and allow us to have possession.

In a dream world we then sign Bellingham in a couple of years time.

Bruno loses the ball a lot, doing that right in front of your own area is not a good idea. He is also the creator in chief so he needs to play up the field. We have some great players but they do not gel as well as we double like and we clearly have a yawning gap in midfield.

Buy a top CM or DM, agree a formation, play people in their best position, ensure everyone knows their role, it’s not rocket science.

Maybe Bruno drops deeper in the twilight of his career.

Welcome KB.
Not sure Bruno would be good there he doesn't always do the simple things well. He would not be ideal as losing the ball in those areas causes real damage and he is a bit of a diver doesn't like the rough and tumble not very strong in the air or challenge plus taking Europe's statistically best no10 and moving him to no6 makes no sense to me. Ask klopp about weakening his midfield to cover defence. Never weaken your strongest area in order to strengthen another imo.

For me personally, someone like bissouma or ndidi alongside pogba (if he stays dvb if not) or mctominay would be a good platform. Bruno has got to play furthest forward. No question of that.

8.) 22 Sep 2021 02:37:32
Good question, Keano. I like Bissouma in the deeper role, Neves as well. If we get Bellingham down the road, he seems more like a #8, someone who drives forward. Bruno's game at United seems built on risk taking, making the final pass or looking to shoot from distance, so much better playing further forward.

I think VDB or Garner could become a trustworthy deep lying playmaker. Neither look likely to be the defensive force that Bissouma could be in that position.

9.) 22 Sep 2021 03:00:24
Bruno loses the ball
As he plays risky, attacking balls. Ex army what we need.

I’d got Neves out of the above options - can pas, shoot and tackle.

10.) 22 Sep 2021 13:27:05
Bruno is one of the best no 10 in the world.
Instead I would recruit a 'special-ist' top class CDM like Bissouma, Neves, Rice, Ndidi or Casemiro.

11.) 22 Sep 2021 13:32:07
Bruno in front of back 4! so you take 20 goals a season out of team, who is going to add them 20 goals! Not only that you take away our most creative and probably best player in final third of pitch. Next your be saying put VDB in his place maybe he would get 3 -5 of them goals a season! That if he could even move or pass forward….

I would rather Carrick comes out of retirement then that idea or in fact just keep Fred there, I can’t think of a more crazy idea in my opinion then move Bruno to sitting in front of back 4…. Even if you could convince him and everyone else to give it a try, he got zero discipline to sit there and would just go wandering.
