My take on the ETH era:

- ETH came with a clear idea of how he wanted the team to play.
- realised that the squad couldn't play how he wanted, and reverted to compact counterattacking style in season 1.
- that worked, so he started second guessing what he wanted.
- but persisted with bringing in players that fit his initial plan.
- ended up with a style of play that was cobbled together from various things that work in a unified system but were a complete mess when put together for a full 90 minutes.
- players were confused.
- ETH is not a good communicator and that made players angry.
- the players that did well were the ones with the simplest instructions - i. e. Garnacho = run at defence, in behind defence, shoot.
- ultimately, he lost sight of who he is as a manager, and tried to cherry pick from various successful systems thinking that he could tie them together.

Nice post Danny.

He will have learned a lot from the experience and will be successful elsewhere IMO.

Thanks angel. I think he needs to take time to reassess who he is as a manager. It feels like the first few games into his tenure shook his confidence in what he was doing at Ajax, and since then he has been looking at what works for other managers, and trying to fit different parts together.

I also think he needs to improve man management because, like it or not, you need to be able to cater to egos at the top level.

I always felt like he was second guessing himself all the time rather than being true to himself.

I was excited about his style of play at Ajax and how he could bring it to united. But we never saw it.

Like most of our ex employees I hope he rediscovers his mojo in a league and club more inkeeping with his skillset and talent.
It would be nice to see him so well elsewhere.
Hopefully he will have learnt plenty and will be able apply those learnings elsewhere and kick-start his career again.

Good post Danny, I think he found the water a little too deep for him. If it is Amorim, will he turn out to be another ETH, or a Mourinho?

That’s the big question AJH.

He’s a young manager with an exciting style of play that has worked in a less competitive league. You’d suspect him to come in full of confidence, but it’s difficult to see how he can fully transplant what he’s doing at Sporting with this squad. In particular, our lack of fullbacks will be a problem. There’s also a question of Bruno’s role in a 3-4-3. You need a strong and mobile midfield two.

For me the biggest issue will be keeping the squad happy and unified. It’s very difficult to implement a new system without antagonising players who don’t fit with what you want to do. He needs to have a strong personality, but one of ETH’s issues was being too autocratic and not listening to players.

On paper he’s a massive coup. I’m just wary of every new dawn at the club after the last decade.

Danny, I agree that one of the big issues with EtH is that every year he seemed to change how he wanted the team to play.

What is harder to understand is whether that was because of his own self-reflection, or because that was asked of him. Or maybe a bit of both.

Either way it seemed to just muddy the water and the players seemed either unsure or unconvinced about what they should be doing.

I like the fact that Amorim has a very clear structure and idea about how his team should play. That doesn't mean he isn't adaptable with his tactics, but that they tend to all be based around the same core ideas and principles, and they tend to be little tweaks rather than sweeping changes. Hopefully that makes it easier for the players to understand, and more convinced about the strategy.

I do have a certain amount of sympathy with EtH, he took over a Frankenstein squad that didn't look well suited to playing any specific style. He had to deal with so many off the pitch issues, most not of his making. While the club also had a "soft" takeover and a change in identity and direction.

So it's understandable that he maybe tried many different tactics and ideas to try and get something out of this squad and meet the changing demands put on him by a changing hierarchy.

Fortunately I think this squad seems fairly well suited to how Amorim like to set up, and needs a little tweaking and improving. But on the whole the majority should be able to adapt to his demands fairly well. He also has a history of overachieving with his team. Which makes me hopeful that he can make a team out of our squad that is greater than the sum of its parts.
