Sunday was a disgrace yet there doesn't seem to be any discussion on one terrible decision made.

How on earth was Rashford given the Number 9 shirt?

This is a major mistake by Carrick. Not just putting Rashford in the squad but giving him an iconic shirt number. This is going to cause squad harmony issues if Rashford stays, keeps that shirt and plays. Yea yea someone will say the shirt number doesn't matter. Sorry but being given a number between 1 and 11 has connotations.

Another day, another Red Man rant. Do you have hobbies? Do you get out and about? This seems to be consuming you, mate.

Maybe I'm just not as committed as others.

May I confirm this is the Man Utd Banter site?
Would you prefer silence, Ajh?

I'm yet to hear any player come out and say anything about Marcus Rashford or how he has caused any disharmony at any club or team he played at. I've only ever heard positives.

angel

Messaging will be carefully managed, you wouldn't find out if there is any dissent until much later.

Simple point is, it is totally wrong for Rashford to be given the No9, in my opinion.

Think this has been done to death now. As it stands, he is back. Like it or not, the club has decided to bring him back and there is nothing we can do about it.

Many of us agree it sends out completely the wrong message, but it is well above our pay grade. They will stand or fall by their decision.

Move on.

More things to worry about with that performance, and many other players' performances, than worrying about what shirt number Rashford is wearing.

He was initially given the No.14 shirt, and that number hasn't (as yet) been given to anyone else (Baleba is expected to get the No.20).

It was a surprise to see Rashford given the No.9, but maybe he has shown good dedication and work rate while back at the club, and he is seen as having earned it.

Hell, maybe the manager set him a challenge to earn it. Who knows.

But, in truth, nitpicking over his shirt number seems a very sad way to try and find more negatives around the club right now.

I think he was offered 14, and Sesko was offered 9, but Sesko said he's happy with 30, so the 9 became available.

A lot of players now have other shirt numbers they want. 1 to 11 matter to fans, for players have their own reasons.

Sesko wanted 30 at Salzburg as it was Haaland's number. He kept it at Leipzig, then United; it's something of a brand for him now.

A lot of people want 23 due to Michael Jordan. Jordan always wore 45, as his older brother (and idol), Larry, wore 45.

When they played together at varsity level, they both couldn't wear it, so as Larry had seniority, Michael chose another number. 23 was half of 45, and he stated that he would be happy to be half as good as Larry. It then became a thing, and he stayed with 23.

Squad numbers mean something different to players now. I would not put too much meaning on it for these guys; they don't care.
