Great to see Dave the save playing at old Trafford again tomorrow.
For many seasons he was fantastic here and pulled off so many outrageous saves.
Despite some rocky periods and mad head in your hands moments i'd wager he saved us more points than he cost us in practically every season he was our no 1.
Even now is swap him in a heartbeat for any keeper in our books.
The sin was not letting him go at the time the sin or call it crime if you will was replacing hime with a keeper luke onana.

The bigger sin was the way ETH got rid of him, no place for sentiment in football I agree but sometimes with the level of service and time he gave he warranted some, but the aloof ETH decided against!

This was perfect example of the grass not always greener, I seem to remember quite a few on here calling for him to be dumped, some even saying he was finished as a keeper and costing us too many goals, some even said Onana was the missing link and a far superior keeper the DeGea…how did that work out!

Sometimes shiny new names and potential plus the red tints are not the answer! This is perfect example.

DDG wanted far too much money. He wouldn't reduce his demands. He spent a year without a football club.

Is Luke Onana André's brother? Is he any good in goal? ?

At the time it did seem like it was the right time for DDG to leave, his contract was massive and we would have had to offer him a lower wage to make keeping him make sense. Which in fairness, given his career with us, would have been a slap in the face.

Still a top class shot stopper, but lacking in many other areas of the game that have become increasingly Important in the modern game.

That said the way he was moved on was a disgrace and didn't sit well with me. Made even worse by his good grace about the whole thing. He deserved a proper send off and a testimonial at the very least.

At the time given the way the modern game is played, his form at Inter, and his history of success with our manager, André Onana made a lot of sense. We overpaid for him, but then we overpaid for pretty much every player at the time.

Unfortunately it just hasn't worked out with Onana, he isn't a bad keeper, but he does appear to be a bad fit for the EPL. Good players have struggled in the EPL, it's a very different kettle of fish compared to leagues on the continent.

I think we will be stuck with Onana for this season. Hopefully with a better team around him, hopefully playing better as well then maybe Onana's form will improve.

Today though should all be about showing our love and appreciation to David De Gea, a club legend who deserved to win more with us than he did.

Just because Onana wasnt the answer, it doesn't mean we should have kept DDG. He was declining, and it was very obvious. Also, its no wonder not a single top team went for him.

Wasn’t that to do with his £350k per week salary?

09 Aug 2025 12:25:48
Your wrong there Trololo DeGea offered to take a wage cut, ETH just wanted rid at any cost, imo he wanted his own stamp on the team, hence the terrible way he was discarded, yes he was on decline from his own standards, but even that is still much better than many, especially Onana, Bandy, and old boy Heaton, Even 2/ 3 years further on he is still better keeper than our 3….

It’s been made pretty clear in all media outlets that that’s not the case De Gea literally had no club for a year because he wouldn’t lower his demands, he was very poor in this final season with us as well, we were right to let him go when we did, we just should have replaced with someone who can save some shots.

lol…. heres the facts GDS
David de Gea signed a contract extension with Manchester United only for the club to back out of the agreed proposal. De Gea, 32, agreed to a drastic reduction on his current £375,000 per week wages, but the club did not sign the contract. …….

Lots of people wanted De Gea sayibg he was error prone and a liabiliry in his last season.

What we didn't know was the alternative was going to be 50 million and a bigger liability.

It would have to be somewhere in between gents.
At first DDG refused to take a cut, hence UTD looked elsewhere.
When apparent they were moving on DDG offered to take a cut.
He has himself to blame for his exit.
I loved him as a player but the greed got the better of him.
But yes, still better than Onana, Altay and Heaton and that is taking the best attributes of all three and combining into one super crap keeper.
