I get slaughtered for it and will again, but the defence is so poor, if this goes into the EPL with that back 5 that started today or even finished we got to start scoring many goals to out do the goals against
On the plus side Mbuemo looked far and away our best buy, even though struggled for fitness
Cunha did not look very good, couple of flicks here and there, but vast improvement needed
Amad at RWB poor, will not start there against Arsenal
Again very slow through spine of team
Probably the starting 11 today was near as damn it the team against Arsenal, barring maybe 2 or 3 at most
I guess there be the usual suspects saying we will be challenging because they see great things today!

I thought pre season didn’t mean anything? It didn’t when we won.
I thought Cunha looked really good, the way he goes past players is great to watch, looking forward to seeing him thrive in games that mean something.
Exciting season ahead, ups and down but should be a lot better than last season.

You should be slaughtered for it German. We have some very good defenders. We need to upgrade on Maguire next year but De Ligt is really good. Yoro and Heaven are excellent young talents but obviously need to develop. Lisandro Martinez can be rash but is a top player. Shaw and Mazraoui are options beyond what most other teams have. Dorgu leaves gaps when defending set pieces but his promise is obvious. And Amad is an amazing option at RWB, especially as that side is expected to be the more attacking side. If you don't agree with this then fine but your standards are unreasonable imo if so.

Glad it’s another week though, because by then I will stop laughing at Martinez is a top player, DeLigt really good and Shaw and Maz beyond what other teams have! And Amad amazing…. the only bit I agree with in that is Amad is very good, but not at RWB as again showed yesterday.

Fair enough German. For clarity my point on Shaw and Mazraoui is them being better bench options than other teams have. Let's go by facts: last year we were middle of the pack for goals conceded but only Everton and the relegated teams scored fewer. In xG and xGA we were mid. Undoubtedly we have better attackers for this season. We have several young defenders, several that were in their first year here last year and a change to a back 3 that took time to understand. Conceding just a few fewer goals brings us to top 8 defensively. I also expect fewer concessions because our attack will be much better at retaining possession. So yes we'll see but my position isn't based on blind optimism but on the numbers.

I really don’t see us not letting in boatloads, yes we have better attackers and hopefully get the ball forward quicker to them, but if they don’t score and lose possession we will leave gaps everywhere and no pace to cover it, last season we were decent defensively because we had 5 back majority of time and 2 holding midfielders and hardly got our our own half, with our new attackers that’s going to change, imo our back 5 plus GK is as poor as it gets for any team hoping for top 4 (which I just don’t see)
I would love to hear the EDs non United supporters of course unbiased views on our defence as a whole in it’s individuals?

{Ed001's Note - the youngsters are very good but the rest need replacing. So long as it is well drilled, they should have enough to get through the season. The issue is behind them with the keeper being a liability.}
