Ronaldo must have an offer on the table, for this to break now. Who can afford him, lm unsure, but Jorges Mendez must have found something that appeals to him.

It's unfortunate for Ronaldo that when he came back last year he both underestimated the depths to which the team had sunk and overestimated his ability to change for the positive the prevailing dynamic created by 10 years of EW mismanagement, resulting in too many overpaid uncommitted and mediocre players and a poor manager. Now he may be stuck between a rock and a hard place. We'll see.

I, for one, hope he finds the level of team his ego requires, because at this stage in his career he's probably more of a distraction than a useful part of the overall rebuilding process. The man is a star, he's accomplished everything, he's extremely wealthy, but we have to face facts, the internal drive that's led to all these accomplishments means that when push comes to shove his personal glory is his sine qua non. He may say he loves United, but he loves himself far more. That's okay. I don't resent him at all. He would not be the player he is if that were not so. I just hope that if United get a decent offer they'll let him move on rather than bind him to a project to which he's not committed.

If he wants to leave we should let him leave. Just not to Chelsea. I’d love to see him at PSG alongside Messi for a season if I’m honest.

Why not Chelsea.

Im not a fan of this not selling to rivals. We want rid of players because they weaken us, so why not have the view it will weaken them.

Because I don’t think Ronaldo weakens us. I only say that he should be allowed to leave because he wants to and I don’t think we should be forcing players to stay at the club if they don’t want to be here. Ronaldo would absolutely strengthen Chelsea and would eradicate whatever slim chances we might have had to finish above them (right now their defense is a mess and they lack a top goal scorer, so I don’t think us finishing above them is entirely beyond the realms of possibility) .

Redseven why look at Chelsea as a united fan at all?
If ronaldo wants to go he should be sold imo too.
But why not look at it like we might be better without him?
What's in it for united. There will be upsides to him moving on that's the only thing any united supporter should be focusing on imo.
Way too much time spent looking over the fence into the neighbours garden with envy.
Our new manager will be focusing on united I think all our players and supporters should be concentrating on united being as good as we can be.
I doubt we will be in the shake up this coming season but see no reason why we can make big strides into last season deficit.

If we get a "suitable offer" from Chelsea we should take it. Of course suitable from Chelsea may be more than suitable from some team outside England.

I love Ronaldo i wouldve sold him if Nunez was signed but i just don't trust our forwards to score enough goals.

If he wants to go then sell him and try get Antony in but I don't think we would score enough and that is the big issue!

Anyways not the end of the world as he is 37 and soon to be 38.

Ken 100% spot on.

I’d prefer it if we could do the Italian way where they pass players around. Imagine being able to buy Salah or Mane when he was at Liverpool and them buy Rashford or Ronaldo etc as examples, it would be far more interesting imo.

There's a big obsession that we "won't score enough goals without Ronaldo".

Last season with Ronaldo we scored 57 league goals.

The season before he joined (i. e. without him) we scored 73 goals. The year before that we scored 66 goals, the year before that we scored 65 goals.

The fact is that with Ronaldo in the side we have scored less goals than in any other recent season.

So if we scored 73 league goals without Ronaldo then why can't we do that again this season?

Maybe, just maybe Ronaldo is a distraction and a chance vacuum drawing all chances to him, making us predictable and easier to defend against.

shappy- There's a big obsession that we "won't score enough goals without Ronaldo". we here that all the timeand another "where would you be without his goals? " but the ones that spout it don't realize that we don't play with 10 men if he isn't picked!
btw I'm totally in agreement with your post.
Also we could just unearth a gem who fits better, scores as many or more and brings more to the game. If cr7 wants to go get a few quid send him away and invest his wages in someone who is a longer teerm prospect. we may even see the other players whose form dwindled step up, Bruno, rashford and sancho?

If Ronaldo wants to go we should let him, however, it's a legitimate question around where the goals come from based on our performances last season.

We didn't win a single game without Ronaldo after he signed last season. That's pretty damning.

Shappy, I made the point the other day that when SAF sold RVN and purchased Carrick everyone asked where would the goals come from. As it turned out the following season we scored more goals, had more goal scorers and won the title back. Football is a team game. If one's tactics are too oriented to a single source of goals they are just as likely to be less effective overall. Last year was our lowest EPL position and worst scoring season. Ronaldo's personal success could easily be seen as coming at the cost of the team as a whole.

We scored plenty of goals before Ronaldo joined, fewer when we changed tactics to accommodate him. As Shawthing highlights, Ronaldo's personal success / goalscoring ultimately came at the cost of the overall team. I understand Ronaldo is a legend. Without doubt one of the greatest players to grace the game. But there is no evidence from last season that keeping him would make us any better. Ten Hag is the best signing we could have had this summer. Can he get an attacking team with Ronaldo up front - of course he can. But I bet he would be relieved if he went. Its a tactical headache he can do without. Likewise we shave £25m off the wage bill too and can't see us investing anywhere near that wage-wise if indeed we do a direct replacement.

Woodward has gone. Of course we need to improve the quality of the team and squad overall. But we don't need another 'galactico'.
