We need to keep a sense of perspective. Let's judge how good we are when we face the top teams. On any given day we could win against everybody if we play well and /or get the rub of the green. If after playing the likes of Chelsea, City, Arsenal home and away and done well and eon the majority of matches then we will know we are on the right track.

Well LVGs record against the top 6 last season was P:10 W:5 D:3 L:2, so far this season we have beaten both liverpool and Tottenham. He has already proved he is a good big game manager.

If you can not see that we are already on the right track then I don't know what will convince you.

But how true is that? Do you think we did well last season?

Last season if we look at the results between the top six sides(Chelsea. City, Arsenal, United, Spurs and Liverpool) then actually we played the best.

With 5 wins and 3 draws we collected 18 points against our nearest rivals.
Chelsea had the second best record of 4 wins and 5 draws making 17 points.
Then City with 4 wins and 3 draws making 15 points.
Arsenal( 2 wins, 5 draws) and Liverpool( 3 wins, 2 draws) tied with 11 points.
With Spurs collecting 8 points from 2 wins and 2 draws.

Which is funny as three of the teams finished higher than us, one of them picking up 7 points less than we did against the best teams in the league. So it appears it is how you play over an entire season that really counts rather than the results against your nearest rival( although they certainly do help).

Very true and i have always said the team that wins the most on the road in the PL is the one who generally wins the thing. I believe we had the best or second best record in the PL last year at home but still finished way off the pace.

So far this year we are doing well with 2 wins and a loss. I will take wins and the occasional loss compared to drawing a lot of games away which is what we did last year.

Winning titles is all about grinding out results, turning those losses into draws, and those draws into wins.

If last season all the games we lost by the odd goal we drew instead, and half the games we drew we nicked a winner then we would have won the league.

We lost 6 games by the odd goal, if we drew those games that would have been an extra 6 points.

We drew 10 games last season, if in half of those we nicked a winner then that would have been an extra 15 points.

That would have given us an extra 21 points taking our total up to 91 points four more than Chelsea's 87. If we only managed to change half the 6 we lost into draws we would still have won the league by one point.

The team that wins the league is the team who just gets that extra goal when needed to change a loss into a draw or a draw into a win even just half of the time.

Now I'm not saying we will or even can win the league this year but already I see results that last year I don't think we would have got. Spurs and Southampton wins spring to mind, could have easily been draws, but we have an extra 4 points by finding that goal. The only result I'm disappointed with is the draw with Newcastle, if we managed to grab a winner then we would be joint top of the league. But it is a long season.

Lets just try and enjoy it.

I think a lot of people are missing one major point in all the talk about our new players and team in general. Bottom line is this. Can we realistically compete for trophies against Barack Bayern Madrid City and Chelsea.? Honestly I do not think we are very close to these teams. After spending a fortune we are still not close enough to really worry these teams. That's not being defeatist but honest and it bloody well hurts

Obama?

2.) 02 Sep 2015 00:37:16
Listen Gabi the team is fine. It's not perfect but there is ability within the ranks to get results. The buck now stops with the manager to show he is not inept and that the players he has invested in were for a reason.

3.) 02 Sep 2015 06:40:59
We surely have quality players especially after this transfer window. Imagine a team with Mata, SchMidfields, Depay, Luke Shaw, Darmian, Smalling and Young, plus Martial, you were to say "it's good".

Though after 4 bpl games we've played, we were really not that good. But you know the results were not due to poor quality of any single player(maybe 1 or 2, yes). The team couldn't produce synergy of total quality because the restrains to players from some mysterious "philosophy", I still can't exactly get it, which has been argued for a while.

I'm afraid, if we keep on maintain that "philosophy" or if the "process" for it to produce takes too long, that Martial new talent will be also drown in this system with all other quality players.

Spot on john, 1 or 2 players are letting us down, Rooney most notably but then we've very good players who haven't just become bad. I think someone above said, buck stops with LVG now, it's his squad entirely.

Jed

Good post and i agree. Our build up play is so slow and tailor-made for frustration and gives every team with average players a decent chance as most are quite organised and can defend in numbers. Depay and Martial will be nullified if we play this way as both need space to make runs.

Just watching second leg highlights of 2008/09 Champions League semi final against Arsenal. We are a million miles away from that team. Really solid defence then and we attacked with such pace.

One of my fav games that one together with 3-5 at Spurs and Big Ron's Barca Win (showing my age) 😆😆

2.) 13 Aug 2015 14:16:45
Totally agree Gabriella. We are a shadow of that team. But the fault is not all of Moyes and LVG, Fergie let the team slide and handed an aging team with hardly any future in it and now, the manager and the club are trying to re-build, it could take another 3 years before we can aspire to be top dogs again.

3.) 13 Aug 2015 14:38:16
Schmid

Agree on that

4.) 13 Aug 2015 15:30:41
Agree with that also, Schmid. Saf, Moyes, lvG and Woody all need to shoulder part of the blame for where we are now.

Wonder if this is to sweeten them for a deal for one of their players?

Toddy the papers and radio and TV have basically been talking about only one Club this transfer window. And guess what it ain't Looserpool. Man Utd will probably not win the premier league title this year nor the champions league but even if your lot could (which as we know is an impossibility seeing as you are not in the champions league) we would still be the biggest club in the UK if not the world. Honestly hand on heart I believe we will return to the top of the pile here in the UK within a few years. It won't necessarily be with this exact team or manager but the foundations are being built for another sustained period of success. I don't think that can be said of your team. I like Brendan Rodgers think he is a decent man but feel he will fall short getting you back to the top. He reminds me of a cross between Wenger and Rangers ie stubborn persistence in his ideas contrary to all the evidence in front of him mixed with tinkering for no apparent reason

I think Madrid will get De Gea They will have too much clout and a degree of realism will prevail. Missing the deadline by one minute is different to missing it by say an hour.
