Ruben Amorim has revealed Manchester United will not have money to spend in the January transfer window despite the need for new signings.
Speaking candidly to reporters on Monday night about the possibility of January transfers, Amorim stated, "We don't have that possibility in January. You know the situation better than I [do]. It's not the case I am not arriving here and I can spend a lot of money, changing all the team. You know the situation so it's not a point to talk about it. "

While I enjoy Amorim's press conferences as I find him intelligent, honest, charming and engaging, I still take everything said with a pinch of salt.
Maybe he's being very candid, the financials do suggest that we need to balance the books, so a purchase would need to be funded by a sale (or at least a saving in some form) .
January is rarely a time clubs look to spend big. Clubs don't want to lose their best players midway through the season, which pushes the prices up. While well run clubs won't buy players on a whim, and only look to sign long term targets if they become available.
Most of the players who are available in January who you don't have to pay a premium for tend to be players who have either:
1. Fallen out with their club and the relationship is unrepairable, so the club just needs to cut ties.
2. A player is entering the final 6 months of their deal and could leave for free in the summer. Although by this point the player can sign a pre-agreement with a club from a different governing body (FA) . Meaning that a club that signs him will likely have to pay higher wages to make up for the loss of a signing bonus he would receive if he just waits 6 months, on top of paying a fee for him.
3. They are not seen as good enough at their club and considered expendable, so the club is happy to sell and bring some cash in for a player who doesn't really contribute much to their team. Why would we want to sign a player who isn't deemed good enough for another club, we have enough of those in our squad already.
4. Finally the very very rare occasion where a player has some kind of clause in their contract that allows them to be bought for a specific amount. This would be the case with someone like Alvaro Fernandez for example. However, most release type clauses are only active during the summer window. Which means it tends to be buy back clauses that might be applicable during January.
Which kind of means that in January the only two viable options (if we want to actually improve and not just waste money on a temporary fix) are using contract clauses if they exist, or spending over the odds on long term targets.
Given that we have very little to spend, even less than originally planned for after paying the settlements and release fees for EtH, Ashworth and Amorim. Then the only logical way that we could buy a player is through selling.
Of course there is also the other train of thought. Given our limited budget, it doesn't make sense to weaken any potential bargaining position by saying we have money to spend.
I expect to see us sign one or two players in January, but that will be offset by departures.
Rumours suggest that Nuno Mendes is a top target, but he won't be cheap and only available if we sell someone like Rashford. Which might explain the clubs recent stance with Rashford.
If we can't sell Rashford in January then maybe we could look at Alvaro Fernandez as an alternative option. His signing could be covered by saving wages on players like Eriksen, Lindelof and maybe loaning out Rashford.
It will have to be a wheeler dealer January I'm afraid. But that shouldn't surprise people. The clubs financial position has clearly been weakening for some time. I pointed out that under EtH we made more loan signings than we did under SAF. The clues that the money was drying up have been there for a few years now.

I am not sure that the money is drying up, there is plenty of money, you can literally see the accounts if you want to, it’s not like we are going bust, it is more to do with remaining within the rules with regards to losses over a certain period and how we manage that without getting point deductions like other teams have done. I’m sure we could spend 400 million in January and take a point deduction but I’d rather we remained within the rules even if it means it takes a bit longer to improve.

That's it GDS, it's a rules issue, not a money issue.

Either way it makes spending all that money completely heedless. Despite eth being useless they left themselves zero wiggle room?

That back 5 cost around £300 mill yet the team can't keep a clean sheet.

He doesn't have any system in place @Banjoe. fans are pretending he has one.

According to some the club is in the right direction.
