We're going to win the league!

Lads, I'm excited. Top of the league half way through should be celebrated if we manage it!

Can't imagine many fan-bases not cheering being top after so many games, so we should get on board with that too, whether you want Ole in or out or something in between.

1.) 12 Jan 2021 20:53:06
It would be class alty! Strange strange season but to be top at any time is great.

04 Jan 2021 22:06:43
Well that was a great result.

I wonder if United's 16th highest ever goal scorer will have us sat top after half the season. That would be something to be excited by and time to ease off on the whole in/ out tedium, surely?

Alty Jim

1.) 04 Jan 2021 22:23:49
Ohh my days. We could be top by the time we play them.

2.) 04 Jan 2021 22:30:09
2nd in the league with a game in hand is yet again being heralded as the catalyst to shut up any discussion of Ole's ability?

So what's the expectations for this season Jim? Can we assume anything other than the title is now a failure?

3.) 04 Jan 2021 22:53:38
I think most if not all would agree that the target for the season was to close the gap on the scouse and Liverpool.
Mumbles are you looking for a failure?

4.) 04 Jan 2021 22:55:28
No mate, just suggesting we enjoy it. 99.9% of following football is not winning a trophy, so chill out and get excited that it’s looking up. Forget any silly in/ out campaigns and lighten up a bit.

5.) 04 Jan 2021 23:29:14
Not at all Jred. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If our upturn in results has resulted in a cease and desist on anything anti-Ole, then the bar must be raised?

Jim. That's just where we disagree. I enjoy watching football but as a fan of United, trophies are the be all and end all. There's no point in competitive sports if you're not in it to win it.

6.) 04 Jan 2021 23:36:34
Mumbles
I judge a team over a season not a few games .
My target last season was top 4 this season it was to close the gap on Liverpool and City.

7.) 04 Jan 2021 23:59:35
Quantify close the gap though. losing by 20 points is closing the gap would you be happy with that?
my target was plus 20 points i think you agreed with that as reasonable and attainable.

8.) 05 Jan 2021 02:56:28
Ken, look at points this year for everyone. They are all lower. So surely closer to the top by 20 points is a better measure.

In the title race is a good step forward.

9.) 05 Jan 2021 06:23:57
Ken this season will be a very different season to last i'm not sure you can compare the 2 like that .
We finished 33 points of top that's miles off we need to do better than that .
Its going to be a tough slog this year imo infact I think we are already seeing that .
But is there really any point having this discussion you and others set a target of top 4 last year until we finished 3rd .
There is a lot to take into account imo.

10.) 05 Jan 2021 06:44:55
Should also say last January we kicked on and never lost a league game . It will be difficult to improve on that imo.

11.) 05 Jan 2021 07:49:12
Mumbles, I think you’ve missed my point. You can’t win a trophy every time you play, so enjoy it when form is good and you look in a good position to do so. The joy of sport is all in the drama and the ups and downs, otherwise what’s the point?

12.) 05 Jan 2021 08:24:01
The joy in sport is winning a trophy.

I think given where we are now, we have to win a trophy and challenge for the league this season and that doesn’t mean finishing adrift in 3rd. We can enjoy the ride but winning is what it is about.

13.) 05 Jan 2021 09:30:21
Good job you don’t support a lower league team that never wins anything Red Man, or many other teams who never win a thing, sure they still get plenty of enjoyment out of football.

14.) 05 Jan 2021 11:53:44
Mumbles, I think this highlights the argument that took place a couple of days ago. Discussion is fine but sometimes you just have to enjoy the highs whilst we have them, Ole may provide to be a complete disaster but right now it’s getting interesting. Let’s just enjoy it for now, if it falls off a cliff there I’ll be plenty of time for that conversation,

15.) 05 Jan 2021 12:08:20
Redman, you’ve proven my point with your post about Ronaldo above this one. It’s tricky to see how something that gave you goosebumps and made you excited enough to call your mate wasn’t enjoyable. Also, if it’s only trophies you’re after, why not tune in for just the last day of each season? Or just flick through stats pages on Wikipedia? Most fans enjoy the up and down, and the excitement lies in the fact it’s a so-called rollercoaster.

One of Pogba's best games for United. Very tricky seeing VdB squeezing into this team at the moment, although his cute passing may be a trick to use against Bielsa ball this weekend.

1.) 17 Dec 2020 23:00:32
Not sure I agree Jim, some nice touches and cross field balls for the highlight reel as always but also pretty sloppy in possession at times, seems to get the ball and think he can beat the man without having to run.

2.) 17 Dec 2020 23:13:38
VDB was never a back up for bruno, but was meant to be the backup for pogba. He would be so much better with a proper DM and Bruno. don't know why Ole is playing him out of position.

3.) 18 Dec 2020 06:56:08
Pogba was infuriating, brilliant 1 minute and then losing the ball in a dangerous, position the next. However, you can’t question his effort or commitment, he put a shift in.

4.) 18 Dec 2020 07:13:54
When his agent is running his mouth constantly, when he turns up 1 in 10 games of course you can question his effort and commitment. One game does not change the fact he is an arse.

Poor stuff. Really felt we were going to knick it at the end. Very surprised to see Telles replaced and not Shaw. Lack of attacking options and ideas, but that defending was just awful.

Alty Jim

1.) 08 Dec 2020 22:19:30
Painful to watch AJ. The defending for all 3 goals was so bad.

Forget whether or not our defenders as individuals are of the required standard. It’s the positioning, communication and will that we are lacking at the back. And all this things point to poor coaching.

2.) 08 Dec 2020 22:26:02
The players aren’t good enough for sure but you’re right that with proper coaching surely they’d be more organised, be positionally better and maybe look like an actual unit. This lot play nearly every week but look like they’ve never met 🤷‍♂️.

No to Bale.

If I had to sign 4 players it would probably be KDB, VVD, Messi and Mbappe.

Sorry, I’ve been outside enjoying the sunshine.

I’m surprised nobody has talked about the possibility of cancelling NEXT season instead. It would take the pressure off needing to finish this season quickly, allow players to rest before the euros, allow all competitions to conclude properly, and could even be a good opportunity to align with the unusual break in the 2022 season for the WC. Nulling a season where a ball hasn’t been kicked seems much easier than one where all is technically still to play for.

Herrera, I think that’s a weird way to view sport. They aren’t children, they are paid elite athletes. Did you also dislike beating Arsenal 8-2?

Probably worth a reply on my part.

I stand by what I said on the original reply to Shan further down the page. It might not be what some classify as racist these days but just the terminology used sticks in the craw and, as I said in my initial post, was pretty clumsy.

Couple of points:

1. It’s been assumed that I am white. Interesting conclusion to draw. Also interesting to note that ‘a brown boy’ can’t be racist.

2. The terms ‘haters’, ‘them/ us’, etc. is overly-partisan for my liking, and I never realised there were such divides in the fan base until I visited this page many years ago. The overriding feeling I have about all that is that it’s a shame people are so angry about it sometimes. It’s just sport. I love Ronnie O’Sullivan and absolutely love it when he plays and wins. I don’t get stroppy and insulting when he loses though - I recognise the glory of sport for the drama it throws up.

3. It was just my opinion. Remember that when someone (arguably successfully) picks you up on a point and probably proves it wrong, it’s up to you to be humble and hold your hands up. I think Shan made a comment in the heat of the moment that portrayed him in a light that may be considered racist. Clumsily racist, perhaps, but not something I think he may look back on with some regret. As has been pointed out, I don’t know the guy personally, but I certainly know his views when it comes to United, and can deduce from that what he meant to say.

For the record, I am neither Ole In or Out - I think the modern idea of supporting a manager rather than a club a strange one, and I am currently enjoying United being in with a shout for the league. It was a stinker of a result but clearly/ hopefully an anomaly.

Also Shan, if it helps, sir, you shouldn’t leave this forum just because of me. Come on, I’ve got lots more things to pick you up on ha!

Your hyperbole is laughable. I agree with your points about tactical mistakes, but I disagree with your points about Rashford’s ability.

Also, I would say your comments about him going to Africa are right on the cusp of being racist. With the current news story from last night and the issues surrounding that, it seems a little bit insensitive (or at least a bit careless) to make crass comments like that. Come on Shan, you’ve clearly got your own opinion - as you are entitled to - but just try to express it like a grown up.

BR that’s football from another era. Fluidity and versatility is what a modern attacking player looks like.

Rashford is a good example of that and and stand by my statement of him playing well on the left. I can’t understand the criticism directed at him - he’s as good as Mane, Salah, Sterling and Mahrez this season but plays with an inferior squad. That’s without even considering his age.

Also, stop reducing all other points-of-view in a debate to things like ‘rose-tinted’ or ‘pathetic’. That’s not a constructive way to get your opinion across and encourages the sort of name-calling and partisan behaviour that plagues websites like these.
