With the Manchester derby tomorrow and the talk around managers, I was wondering what makes a great manager. Pep is often talked about as one of the greatest of all time, but Zidane is not.
If you look at their records, during Pep's first 249 games he won the league three times and the CL twice. Zidane has taken charge in 245 games and has won two leagues and three CL, it seems a comparable record, both had the fortunate of a Ronaldo or Messi playing for their team, but Zidane is never spoken of in the same breath, why?

Because Pep was born from God and Jesus and nobody can criticise a man who is like that. ZIDANE IS GOD, but he manages Madrid. EVERYONE knows Barcelona and Citeh are the best ever.

{Ed077's Note - so do you rate Zidane as one of the best managers or don't rate Pep?

Also Real Madrid are so so poor and havent been that good under Zidane. But his trophy haul means it's hard to dispute his coaching abilities

ED077,

Do you think it was more to do with the CR7 effect as opposed to ZZ managerial abilities?

{Ed077's Note - I think it was a really good Real Madrid squad that had a genuinely great great player in CR7 that led them to so much success. I dont see anything in Zidane's managerial skills that makes him great, which his records on terms of trophies might suggest. Zidane was a good manager made better by the team not the other way round IMO}

ED077,

I agree. This is why second time round he has struggled. Also he hasn't any experience of building or rebuilding a team, something that he will have to do if he remains as RM manager.

{Ed077's Note - well Zidane is still young in managerial terms so has a lot of time to prove a keyboard warrior like me wrong:)

The comparison between Pep and Zidane is not even close when you talk about great managers, however Zidane does prove that success can be achieved without being a great manager.
Zidane steadied the shop are RM and had top players and allowed them to play and you can't argue that was not successful first time around. I see aspects of Olly and how he is with us and to a degree we have had success in steadying the ship and progressing to a point.
However, neither Zidane or Olly to I see elevating players the way that Pep has been able to do at all his teams, so appreciate he has had some top players but he absolutely improved them.
Pick your poison and both ways can have success.

{Ed077's Note - Zidane is good but his record is great, up there with greatest

So what people are suggesting is an average manager can achieve unbelievable success if they have a great squad of players.

Hmmm, so if Ole is average then obviously we don't have a great squad of players? 😂.

{Ed014's Note - you have neither so it’s a little irrelevant

Don't get me wrong he won the CL 3 times. That in itself is an incredible feat.

Once Ronaldo left, the RM team was never the same.

Shappy, Zidane has only managed Madrid, he is clearly a talented manager but whether he's going to be a great is up for debate.

Oles record as a manager is incredibly weak. I wouldn't even call him average.

Pep is doing it with it dodgy doctors in Barcelona and blood money in the EPL.

Pep has never beaten Ole in league match, average manager.

{Ed077's Note - yes I think City should sack Pep and appoint Ole as manager. After Pep didn't score an injury time goal to win the CL.
