I've heard Eric Ten Hag is very keen on bringing in Christian Eriksen and Stefan De Vrij. Both are available on a free and won't eat much in to the transfer budget. Any truth in this?

IM7

{Ed002's Note - Not that I am aware. There have been other clubs who have been talking to CE's agent. De Vrij is being replaced this summer but I am not aware of any Manchester United interest - and both players are the wrong side of 30.}

1.) 01 May 2022 14:48:05
I’d have Eriksen at OT in a heartbeat.
A DM with Eriksen and Bruno ahead would be exciting.

2.) 01 May 2022 19:18:07
Really like Eriksen and it would be great to have someone in the team who can orchestrate and deliver consistent setpieces too. Makes sense on a free but I think personally we'll be pushing for much younger players a little looser around the edges. Neves in this case maybe.

{Ed002's Note - Neves and Ericksen play in different positions.}

3.) 02 May 2022 09:26:31
With Pogba and Matic leaving the CM area, we need two or three additions. A ‘no.6’ is vital, but if ETH doesn’t fancy one of Garner, vdBeek, Fred or McTominay, then we’ll need another midfielder.

No 6: New signing / Garner
No 8: Fred / McTominay
No 10: Bruno / vdBeek

Is what I think will happen, though I’d really like Eriksen and Bruno playing ahead of a Sangare/ Ndidi type midfield destroyer.

Listening on one of these independent fan channels and an "in the know" mentioned the offer for Angel Gomes is still on the table? I'd find it bit embarrassing for a club of uniteds stature to do that. But apparently he would sign if certain players are shipped out. Any truth in this?

IM7

1.) 11 Jul 2020 07:31:21
I can't say if anyone knows that for sure, but it does make a certain amount of sense.

Angel Gomes wants to play football, he plays on either wing or at No.10, so currently his competition for places are Rashford and James for LW, Greenwood and Mata for RW and Bruno, Lingard and Andreas Pereira for No.10.

7 players ahead of him fighting it out for 3 places. His pathway if pretty blocked. If Mata, Lingard and Andreas Pereira were to leave then Gomes chances of starting some matches increases dramatically.

Personally I think the best position for Gomes to play in the EPL especially early in his career while he is learning and developing would be LW. He is small in stature and going up against a full back rather than a CB will be easier for him. He is right footed but isn't a great crosser so playing on the left then cutting in and shooting or playing a through ball or a cut back would be the best way to play him.

Unfortunately we have Rashford as first choice on the LW, with James as back up. So I don't see many chances for a game for him at our club in that position.

Bruno will be first choice at No.10 and he will play more or less every game he is fit for. While the club are looking at players like Grealish who would not only jump ahead of Gomes at No.10 but on the left too.

Which leaves RW, Greenwood is doing an excellent job of thing that position down. While James has done a good job there particularly at the start of the season. While the club are looking to bring in Sancho or someone else for RW and have made that their number one priority.

So for Gomes I don't see a way into the team for him unless the club fails to sign player for the two primary positions they are looking for AND the club moves on Mata, Lingard and Pereira. That's a lot of things that need to fall in place to give Gomes an opening.

While from the club's perspective it makes a lot of sense to keep the contract offer open, Gomes on a three year deal would be a club asset worth millions. Gomes joining another club on a free will only get the club a small compensation fee.

2.) 11 Jul 2020 08:37:18
Why is it embarrassing, the kid has been at the club since he was 6 and there have never been any questions about his attitude or ability in the academy years.

He didn't sign the contract because there is no clear pathway for him to develop in the first team, if that situation changes it makes sense for a possible reconciliation.

3.) 11 Jul 2020 09:11:06
If there is then that contract needs to be removed ASAP. Under 18 year old trying to pull the strings? He’s nothing but a disappointment in my opinion and he hasn’t taken his chance. Simple. Get rid.

4.) 11 Jul 2020 11:56:03
If he was that good and was ready ole would have given him games,

If he wants first team football he will need to get it elsewhere.

5.) 11 Jul 2020 12:43:10
I don't know what other people see in him, to me He is not good enough, plain and simple and same goes for Chong too, they are not good enough in my opinion, now Laird, the right back yes I do like him a lot and He is almost ready, thing is we have Bissaka there already but everytime I have seen Him play in the first team he has done well, can't say the same about Gomes.

6.) 11 Jul 2020 18:22:14
Who's he training with now?

7.) 11 Jul 2020 19:49:51
You also didn't know what people saw in Bruno Fernandes Reman 😉.

8.) 11 Jul 2020 22:32:18
We have no idea how good he or Chong are at the next step up - We have hardly seen them. We don’t train or play with them so cannot judge. Plus we are not qualified coaches. If the club think he’s good enough for a contract and he wants to sign it then cool. If not, no need for any bad feeling, snipey comments or histrionics; he’ll go somewhere else and play. His life, he can do what he wants with it.

9.) 12 Jul 2020 13:20:48
Agree Eric. He has done great at youth levels. He has had very few opportunities really. He does not feel he has a future here despite the huge contract offer the club made.
He will assess his options i'm sure he will have plenty and pick the one he believes is best for him.
I respect him for not just taking the 30k a week offer if he feels he won't play enough.

24 Dec 2018 00:25:01
hearing a few grumblings United are interested in re-signing Memphis Depay. Any truth in this?

IM7

1.) 24 Dec 2018 08:02:13
I doubt it. Jose was supposedly the one interested. With him gone I doubt the club will go back for him unless the next manager specifically wants him.

2.) 24 Dec 2018 11:47:31
Just what the club needs to be honest. A left sided winger with a big social media personality!

3.) 24 Dec 2018 17:37:54
Haven't heard any rumblings from his collection of expensive cars arriving. He seems to have settled let's just be pleased for him. And leave him where he is.

4.) 26 Dec 2018 01:41:46
I can see both Ole and Poch wanting to try their hand at bringing the best out of 'Memphis', we do have a buy back clause don't we? Or is it just the first refusal nonsense that still means we'll probably have our pants pulled down?

5.) 28 Dec 2018 13:29:12
I’m sure I read the buy back clause was only for a season or two maybe ED can clear it up .

{Ed002's Note - Try the search engine.}

30 Nov 2017 20:47:29
some of my work colleagues based in France believe PSG will not take up the offer to sign Kylian Mbappe but are confident in signing Alexis Sanchez instead. they think he's off to Manchester united or city and i think this must be why united or whoever leaked a comment that united need to sell before they buy as £160M will be a large pay out for a single player. sounds fantasy football but it was what we were waffling about this afternoon.

IM7

1.) 01 Dec 2017 12:46:45
As far as I'm aware, they don't have an option on the player, PSG have made a commitment to purchase Mbappe next summer.

{Ed001's Note - that was what held up the deal happening is that Monaco wanted a guarantee they would sign him for the agreed price at the end of the loan or they would not agree to loan him.}

20 Jan 2017 00:18:07
both manchester clubs are very keen on signing Eric Dier? i've heard this from a few people this week. any substance to this? would anyone know more?

IM7

1.) 20 Jan 2017 10:29:54
Have a word fella. Why would he leave? Very settled, paid well, part of the project and a regular starter not to mention his partner in crime is also at the club.

2.) 20 Jan 2017 10:53:19
He's not as regular a starter as he would like to be, plus his prefered position is at CB not midfield.

I suspect he would seriously consider a move if it ment playing every week at CB, especially if it comes with a nice big pay rise.

Thats not to say he will move or even if there is any interest in him. But I'm sure he would be prepared to entertain any offers.

3.) 20 Jan 2017 11:21:36
Ok well he's been playing centre back most of the season, played most of the games bar the ones he looked jaded in at the beginning of the season. And to be perfectly honest I don't think he would entertain any offers and I certainly don't believe the club will. He's certainly our next captain in the making

4.) 20 Jan 2017 12:08:28
Let's be serious Chiswick, if Utd were seriously after him, they would probably get him.

5.) 20 Jan 2017 12:41:30
Let's also be honest mate. It doesn't work like that at all. I'm sure ed1 will recall the famous Bale post on YouTube that was quickly removed where he claimed he'd never play for Liverpool or man utd and allegedly said some unpleasant things about both cities. And it's probably why he has allegedly turned down utd twice. And to be fair the way your gaffer is treating rashford I wouldn't be surprised if it's him that may change clubs?

{Ed001's Note - Bale has turned down Citeh a couple of times as well.}

6.) 20 Jan 2017 12:47:46
Is it me or the spurs fans have started speaking Liverpool language all of a sudden. You would notice the word "project" in most of their posts. Probably next year would be your year

7.) 20 Jan 2017 13:11:22
It's good that clubs have projects instead of throwing money for a quick fix?

8.) 20 Jan 2017 14:06:55
The spurs project has been going on for 50 years

9.) 20 Jan 2017 15:48:07
your project will last only until one of chelsea city or utd come with a big offer for kane and one of them will in future, your ceo then is going to dump your project and try and get as much cash as he can for his star player and then spend a little of it one some nobody just like he did with bale, not to mention you manager will jump ship without thinking twice if one of the big boys come calling, just like he did when he was at southampton. So much for the project chiswick.

10.) 20 Jan 2017 21:17:37
Chiswick,

Do you search the rumour pages until someone mentions a Spurs player then pretend you know all about them and that they definitely won't leave. You take it so personally when someone is linked with your player. I wouldn't want Dier as not sure he would improve us, also don't want Danny Rose but both of them you have come on here to tell us we have no chance when actually you have no idea at all. Probably saying the same when we signed carrick or when modric, bale etc left.

11.) 21 Jan 2017 06:30:49
This chiswick fella's a bloody joke, really. Used to come on our site pretending to be a Liverpool fan.
Ed002 eventually called him out.

Frankly naive speaking about projects. Diet, like most footballers, will most certainly have his head turned by a) a massive pay rise and b) a step up. which any of City, United or Chelsea would be. regardless of the past seasons league positions and any "project".

It is a class issue and just the way football is, to be honest.

Any idea what has happened to Phil Jones? He wasn’t with the squad in Spain, barely gets a mention. I’m not sure what injury he even picked up during the lockdown few years ago that has kept him out for so long.

IM7

1.) 12 Dec 2022 12:28:08
I’m jumping to conclusions here but he may be injured.

2.) 12 Dec 2022 13:04:47
He wasn't registered in the 25 man squad at the start of the season. The manager sees no future for him so why involve him?

3.) 12 Dec 2022 19:24:04
We signed him 10 years ago and I think he is near ready to fulfill his potential.

4.) 12 Dec 2022 19:30:58
Probably counting his millions.

5.) 12 Dec 2022 20:57:31
One of the most bizarre contract extentions of all time.

6.) 13 Dec 2022 00:25:16
C'mon guys. I hear City were trying to sign him and there's no way we could let him go and then have to watch him be the next Duncan Edwards at the Etihad.

7.) 13 Dec 2022 10:15:27
Kind of want the club to do an Amazon Prime or Netflix series just to work out what Phil Jones does day to day.

The Phil Jones Files or something like that.

8.) 13 Dec 2022 12:05:15
Interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is delighted to have Phil Jones for at least another 4 years. That statement alone is nightmare fuel.

Obviously these sums could be wide of the mark but supposedly he earns £110,000 a week. That over 4 years is £22,880,000.

9.) 13 Dec 2022 19:03:05
I think his basic wage is around 75k per week, the rest is tied into performance related bonuses, which given he doesn't even get on the bench for mid-season friendlies, means he's going to get naff all above his basic wage.

Still, seems a daft way to burn 75k per week, we'd have been better off buying lottery tickets with it.

10.) 14 Dec 2022 06:52:22
Phil Jones is a better player than Lindelof. Discuss.

11.) 14 Dec 2022 07:26:40
Not in a million years Red Man. You have to be available to play for you to be better than another player. Phil Jones is fit for like 3 games a year.

12.) 14 Dec 2022 07:28:59
Totally irrelevant if he is never fit for selection.

13.) 14 Dec 2022 09:12:35
What would you guys have done? Not signed?

14.) 14 Dec 2022 10:06:07
Interesting point Ref Man, I'd say they both have flaws to their game. However, Lindelof's tend to get exposed more in the EPL while Jones is more suited to our league.

However, like Ken says, it's totally irrelevant if Jones is never fit enough to play consistently.

15.) 14 Dec 2022 12:09:38
Patrick I don't think anybody would not have signed I don't think anybody is blaming Jones for signing more a case of asking what were the club thinking by giving a player that never played such a lucrative long term extension. Bonkers.

16.) 14 Dec 2022 13:24:07
Club at fault Ken. Agreed. But many on here taking the p*** out of the player. Not his fault But to give him a long contract . ? Bonkers.

17.) 14 Dec 2022 13:32:44
You all know I said at the time, bonkers move to give a big new contract to Jones but we are still paying for decisions like that by the Norwegian dunce. How much will we lose on AWB? Still when fit Jones v Lindelof is interesting to discuss. Neither good enough mind you.

18.) 14 Dec 2022 16:26:29
Redman. I assure you Ole had nothing to do with Jones's extension contract. Managers may contribute may have their input but they do not make these decisions. There's only one person to blame and that's Ed Woodward.

14 Mar 2021 18:32:49
Any update or anything on Phil Jones? Has literally disappeared got himself so badly injured during the first lockdown.

IM7

1.) 14 Mar 2021 19:31:28
Just needs a few more years until he reaches his full potential.

Jheez people are so impatient these days.

24 Feb 2019 15:41:35
if OGS knew Lingard was no where near match fit why bring him on after 20 or so minutes. someone from the medical team has some explaining to do.

IM7

1.) 24 Feb 2019 16:04:27
Lack of other options. Might create chances for Chong an Gomes next few games.

2.) 24 Feb 2019 16:28:28
IM7

OGS took a big risk bringing on Lingard, especially so early in the game. He had seen one injury needing a substitution and it was his decision so don’t blame medics. It was for me a sign of his inexperience, he was trying to be positive but it wasn’t the right moment.

The team showed real guts to hang in there, especially Rashford and that was a real positive. I am more concerned about the quality back up, McTominay and Pereira in central midfield are concerning. I hope we see a couple of the youngsters.

Feels a better point than it would have been with a full team.

3.) 24 Feb 2019 16:49:47
He wouldn't have been in the squad if the medics thought he wasn't fit. You're passed fit to play, then you can play.

4.) 24 Feb 2019 17:48:56
Redman - Your always banging on about Ole being inexperienced but bringing on Lingard had nothing to do with that. The man isn't stupid he'll have spoken his medical staff, the player and he was passed fit. He probably didn't start because he was lacking match sharpness having not played for a couple of weeks. Lingard is fundamental to how we want to play and suggesting Ole is somehow naive or to question his judgement is not productive on an afternoon where he squeezed every ounce of effort out of a depleted squad.

You bang on about wanting to use the academy and giving youth a chance then moan about a lack of quality. Mctominay had a fine game. He was brilliant defensively. Worked hard, tracked runners, was positionally disciplined. Yes he lacks quality on the ball at times but that's not his job. He was brave, took the ball off the CB's and used it simply and intelligently.

I thought Ole learnt from the PSG game, he ensured that our full backs didn't get isolated and it was another disciplined and well organised defensive display. Liverpool's lauded attack didn't create a single opportunity today.

Lukaku deputised admirably on the right. He worked hard and defended well. He also kept Liverpool honest and posed a threat on the counter. Unfortunately his touch can be poor at times and his movement is questionable but our two best moments were created by him.

Under the circumstances it was an organised, disciplined and very hard working display. Ole has players wanting to run through brick walls for him. We're not the finished article, everybody knows that, but with the injuries, disruptions and missing some of our best players I'm not sure we could have expected much more. Personally I'm delighted with the effort and application of every player today on a difficult afternoon.

5.) 24 Feb 2019 19:31:49
Great post DLIB.

6.) 24 Feb 2019 20:42:55
DLIB

I have to disagree on your point Re bringing on Lingard when he did. It was an obvious error and sending him on when we had already made one substitution plus Rashford was already struggling was illogical. It did show his lack of experience. Lingard was on the bench for a reason. Ole is very popular so saying he made a mistake is frowned upon but this was a mistake, luckily it didn’t cost us completely.

In terms of the team performance, huge plaudits for their resilience, we stayed compact and defensively didn’t lose concentration. I don’t think McTominay and Pereira, who both played well in the pattern we had to play, are good enough and we will be under extreme pressure at Palace with that combination.

7.) 24 Feb 2019 21:05:49
Agree with a lot of what has been said but want to add a mention to Pogba, who I thought showed a lot of graft today. He wasn't at his creative best, but with the injuries he played a little deeper and without Rashford's movement there was less for him to aim for - but despite this he got back and put in tackles and supported Shaw on the left side. It's something he's often criticised for not doing, but I thought he put a shift in today and deserves recognition.

8.) 24 Feb 2019 21:43:37
Mata signaled he wanted to come off. Who was he supposed to put on for him? Romero? Rashford was already limping and presumably he wanted to save Sanchez for if Rashford had to come off. Lingard was really the only option. It was a gamble but there wasn't much else.

10 Feb 2019 01:10:00
Something certainly looks wrong with Lukaku. he has regressed badly. He was never this bad, surely?

IM7

1.) 10 Feb 2019 09:05:02
We’re not playing to his strengths. Same reason he couldn’t get into that Chelsea team at the time.

Everton played off him and it worked well.

Our attacks have bypassed him before he’s even turned around.

But he has had some good moments under Ole, highlight being against Arsenal. He’s just not suited to fast attacking football, he needs to be the target man.

2.) 10 Feb 2019 09:36:35
He’s a good player but not sure he’s for us. We are starting to have an identity again and it is about pace and quickness, not 2 of his strengths.

3.) 10 Feb 2019 12:42:38
He is actually best suited to the inside right forward role in this team. He has done some of his best work running wide right and stretching the defense. His crossing from there is pretty good.

The only redeeming feature he has as a target man is that even the defenders don't know which way the ball will bounce off him. For his size, he is awful with his back to goal.

I think his role is an impact sub now.

4.) 10 Feb 2019 10:02:46
He has had a dip in form and is low on confidence . it happens its not the end of the world.

5.) 10 Feb 2019 13:05:19
Tony is spot on.
Lukaku does score goals and in the right set up he can be very effective.
So can he adapt his game? Can ole and the coaches find a way to fit him in using his strengths?
Does he want to adapt?
He is prepared to move to be a no1 in a more suitable set up?
Its one of the big issues ole will have to address in the summer if he gets the job.

6.) 10 Feb 2019 14:06:11
He's not and never has been a target man. He's awful with his back to the goal but better running onto things.

7.) 10 Feb 2019 16:25:27
I think ole has shown us the way he intends to play.

Lukaku will not be a starter anymore IMO. Either he's happy to be an alternative option or moves on. I'd imagine we will concentrate on getting fast forwards who can interchange between positions in the next transfer window, allowing us to be much more fluid in transition from defence to attack.

Lukaku does not suit that style of play. But he is a good alternative when we need to change tact.

I don't think he will want to be that at this stage of his career.

04 Aug 2018 13:22:25
what are peoples opinions on Joel Pereira? find it slightly odd someone highly rated at this stage in their career chooses to go to a club in the Portugese league?

IM7

1.) 04 Aug 2018 13:27:34
It's only a loan he will be back.

2.) 04 Aug 2018 14:31:44
I’m pretty sure Jose said he picked the loan and it’s also his hometown club.

3.) 04 Aug 2018 17:15:44
Im7 also he's only a baby in terms of a gk this spell away will do him the world of good. He's is highly rated and if ddg shall leave in the next few years we have quite possibly got the ready made replacement in him, but for that to happen he needs regular game time and not to just sit on a bench with the odd cup game his only real possibility of playing for us this season.

4.) 04 Aug 2018 17:41:50
You’ve seen Jose’s comments about him. He’s highly rated. However we have DDG, and Joel needs precious game time. Maybe he fancies going home for a year or two as well to play some football and be close to family.

5.) 04 Aug 2018 18:02:06
For me I think next year Pereira will be loaned again to either championship or lower end of Premier League with following year him coming in as number 2 dependent on what happens with DDG. Jose does rate him.

They need to take a leaf out of the DRS from cricket. Such as umpires call. This is where the clear an obvious crap would end. So VAR is not the issue. It’s the lack of transparent guidance around it. So best take it away from the premier league work on it and then re -implement it once all those teething issues are ironed out.

Our preseason preparations for past two seasons have been woeful. We just weren’t ready yesterday. Last year we got smashed by Brighton and then Brentford, so not expecting a decent performance till we play forest. But we need to look at our preseason preparations.
