The Fred debate rumbles on. Alan Smith gave him MOTM yesterday which has apparently absolved him of all his sins.

Reminds me a lot of many conversations on here regarding Lingard and Ole. People get so used to mediocrity that when someone who is poor does the bare minimum, its lauded.

Jesse went 18 months without a goal or an assist but because he scored a goal in a cup final, some of you would have kept him around. We forgot what it was like to have a proper player playing in his position. In walks Bruno. Does more in his first month than Lingard did in 2 years.

Same with Ole. He had a fair few cheerleaders in here. Patting him on the back for getting us to a few semi-finals. He even had People praising him after losing a European final. In walks Ten Hag and shows he has more about him in a month than Ole did in 3 years.

Casemiro and Eriksen have shined a light on how poor Fred and McTominay really are. The drop off in quality is huge when one of these two have to deputise.

Nothing against Fred as a man. Seems like his team mates like him. As a footballer, he would struggle to get into any midfield in top 10.

The two games against just show the problem with Fred, his performance range is too wide.

One game he puts in a 7/ 8 and the next one is a 2/ 3 out of ten. Add to that he has many more games like the latter than the former.

Fred is a good player if you don't prioritise things like passing, close control and awareness from your central midfielders.

Otherwise he's below average for a premier league centre mid standard.

Below average PL CM and yet head to head he has been key vs City, Tottenham, Newcastle, and consistently a part of winning midfield battles against top teams.

Where do you think Fred's been so bad this year? He's mostly had consistent 7/ 10s, he had 1 bad game, where many players also did. What's always with the extremism. Against Palace was our best performance of the year til the red card, frankly.

I’d say this season he has had a lot more of the former than the latter. He was extremely poor in the home game against Leeds playing a different role to what he’s played all season and without Casemiro next to him. Yesterday he won the ball back more than any player in any premier league game in the last 2 years so not exactly the ‘bare minimum’.

It's always extremes, it feels like people made up their minds 3 years back. Fred was probably our top 3 players under Rangnick, one of the only performers, this year since the team has settled, he's put in consistent 7/ 10 games and solid sub appearances, with a very very rare bad game, i. e. the Leeds one. Outside of that? He's been exactly what you'd want from a rotation player, who can help you win some games and stay strong when you need him to start. Fred is probably as good a depth player as we're going to get or have. I'd certainly take him over any Arsenal midfielders that aren't starters.

Fred gives his all in every game has a great attitude and is popular with his team mates. He appears to be a very likeable character
He can do a decent job coming on for 20 mins when the game is broken up.
His energy can be infectious.
However I think he is possibly the worst passer of the ball that's ever played 100 games in midfield for united.
Eth only starts him when he has to.
I think once cas is back he'll be out of the team and back on the bench.
I hope he is sold this summer if he doesn't move he will fall further down the pecking order and we'll see a lot less of him.
He is awful in possession and creates very little.
He'll huff and puff but won't blow your house down.
Giggs to Sheringham maybe 85% of his recoveries last night were after he gave the ball away himself??
I hope his role for the rest of the season is confined to those 20 min cameos where he does OK because the less he starts will mean we have a better chance of winning and playing well offensively. A further hope is that we get much better options for next season so that Fred never had to start.

Ken saying it how it is and not pussyfooting about the bush.

Bang on it ken.

{Ed014's Note - he could have simply said, “he’s shite” ?‍♂️

But that's the thing ed014 he is a likeable guy. Most fans want to see all players put in the effort he does. He never hides and does do the odd good thing or pop up with a goal. He does disrupt things for the opposition at times when he comes on.

The issue is he has to start too often and the longer or more He plays the more he becomes exposed.

Ideally he would be behind casimero ericksen Bruno and sabitzer but with 2 out he has to start. He is better alongside casimero but to be fair casimero made Madrid and kroos look decent for years.

{Ed014's Note - I guess it could be worse Ken you could have Jorginho!? and he’s not even likeable ?‍♂️

If Fred only had to start 10-15 in all comps then he’s not a major issue. But the main issue is he can give you an 8 out of 10 (city at home) or a 1/ 10 (Leeds at home and the first hour of Leeds away)

I appease myself with the thought that once Ten Hag has better options Fred will leave. I just hope it's not too far away!

Good post mumbles and Ken.

Does anyone have the stats on hand v Leeds at Old Trafford? How many times did Fred give the ball away?

All action, no brain, prefers when he's scrapping for the ball and not when he actually has it . Definitely a decent squad member for certain games, ala ji sung park, but by no means should he be starting 90% of games where we want our players to keep the ball . Ironically the Barcelona game might suit him, trying unsettle the ne xavi n iniesta.

All I can say is he’s played under several managers for Man Utd is a pretty regular starter for Brazil…the pros must see something we don’t.

{Ed014's Note - nice hair cut? Cleverly and Welbeck have England caps and both are bang average players too.

Angel,

I believe he had a 62% pass success from 59 passes so gave the ball away 22 times! There was a spell in the 2nd half where he gave it away about 7 times in a row. It was by far his worst performance of the season and goes to show even more the affect Casemiro has on this team and the players around him.

Fred is squad player at best and plays his best when casimero keeps him right, would you guys rather keep Fred next season or mc tominay?
