I don't think it work like this at all. When the RM deal is completed, the contract between Mike and Sunderland is terminated and Sunderland is no longer liable to pay his wages. The only time this might not be the case is when the buying club can't afford the contractual wages and the selling club agrees to subsidize them in part. But this is not likely with a young player on the rise.

It is also highly unlikely that the media would have any influence whatsoever on the minds of the player or either club. And who's to say whether the deal was a good one or not? In the example you give Sunderland made £7m on the deal, got £40k a week off their wage bill, and the player didn't achieve much at RM.

If MUFC decided to buy the player 3 years later they would presumably negotiate a wage deal and RM would be off the hook. In simple terms RM paid £7m for him on a 5 year contract so after 3 years the unamortized balance would be £2.8m and the difference between that and what they sell Mike for would be profit. But as I said this is a very simple way of looking at it. Transfers are much more complicated than this - there's agents fees, possible sell-on fees, taxes, registration fees etc etc all of which factor into the finances and are completely beyond my realm of knowledge.

The principle to grasp is that once a contract is terminated by mutual consent, as it would be in a transfer situation, all the terms cease to apply.

Totally agree with your last paragraph, so why did we supposedly pay Di Marias wages. Surely he wanted to go and it was mutual concent.

Material

Jred made a factual statement on here that we did pay up DiMaria's contract however I would question that until the club confirms it. There was significant manoeuvring when it appeared he was leaving and it appears he clearly wanted to leave so I have yet to be convinced we paid his remaining contract up.
