I keep hearing voices in my head saying 442, 442 ;).
It's an outdated formation to an extent. An attacking 433 would be good. I get the feeling that LVG is playing, players to suit a formation and not a formation to suit the players.

Perhaps accommodating players?

I'd like LVG to unleash the rains and play with more creativity and freedom. The players are at times like soldiers. Well drilled, running machines ready to salute the man in command.

There's no doubt we are great at keeping the ball. It's a shame we can't do anything with it. By that I mean play at a high tempo with players looking for spaces to run into, thus creating more opportunities for goal scoring chances.

Depay and Martial seem to have an understanding. Put Rooney upfront to provide experience and this could be very beneficial.

The team doesn't require significant changes, more of a tweak here and there.

Its not quite that simple, you come up with formations and tactics to suit not just your players but also the opposition and the match itself.
For example you might play differently in a knockout competition situation to how you might in the league. You'll also have a different approach depending on who your playing and where.

As for playing to get the best out of your players that is easier said than done, some players require very specific set up to play at their best.

My thoughts exactly mad hatter. I'm not concerned about the squad not being complete as you do have to be wary of how many new faces can be integrated in one window, so long as I can see signs where heading in right direction. I remember fans questioning fergie when Chelsea first won 2 titles on the bounce saying we're finish etc but with a bit of patience Rooney & Ronaldo flourished & the rest is history. Now hopefully the same will happen with Delay & Martial in next couple of seasons. No one knows for certain but let's just enjoy the ride. The football could be more exciting but let's see where season takes us & so long as I see improvements by end of season I'll be relatively satisfied. Rome wasn't built in a day.
