Dest rumours are picking up pace again. don't know much about him, know he was decent at ajax but that's about it. Any knowledgeable people on here think he'd be worth a punt and is he an upgrade on awb to challenge dalot?

I have watched him at Barcelona quite a bit. he was better season before last. Good going forward but defensively nothing to rave about. Will be good with anthony in terms of link up play. Good passing and crossing the ball.

Rapid, good going forward, great technique, still has to lots to learn in terms of defending.

Would be an upgrade on AWB, particularly in the view that his skillset is more suited to how EtH likes to play.

Personally I'd prefer us to sign a midfielder who can progress the ball better than what we have than sign a RB. But appreciate that both positions need addressing. Anymore signings now while needed would probably be a bonus.

Thanks for that. Definitely sounds like someone eth would want to work with, hopefully we can get a move for awb and get this thru even on loan. We definitely need depth at rb as the options after dalot aren't very appealing.

I don't think AWB can be worked and improved. He has a lot of flaws that probably never can be fixed.
With Dest maybe he's more workable than AWB is.
A lot of players after leaving Barcelona tend to have decent careers.

Rohanarora8,

The problem with AWB is that he hasn't been coached correctly at UTD. That probably goes for the rest of the squad aswell. Particularly under OGS, the squad looked unorganised and fairly clueless.

Dest would be an upgrade on both of our current RB options, quite considerably.

Our best right back is playing for QPR, I can’t understand why we loaned him out and will be disappointed if we don’t bring anyone in whilst he’s playing elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure any player can be improved to an extent. Maybe the Barcelona fans are saying exactly the same things about Dest. Bizarrely many are saying Dest's pace and athleticism are there but the first touch and crossing need work. Funny, sounds just like someone else.

AWB is the same as Maguire, they can be coached to a certain extent but the fundamentals are not going to change……. both not of the required standard. ETH hasn’t got a magic wand where he turns average players into world beaters.

The problem with AWB is that we apparently scouted every right back in football and then decided to pay 50 million for one who's not great going forward and not great positionally from a defensive point of view but does have a good recovery tackle.

Our best right back is not playing for QPR ?. Seen nothing in this kid to say he's going to be a starter for us. At 21, he should have made some form of mark by now.

You can’t coach a player to make a simple pass or simple cross

Awb is gash all he has was a tackle and he’s lost the ability to do that

Why we have kept hold of him I don’t know, should have sold him at the start and either got a replacement in or used laird.

Red,

How many times have you seen him play? It’s not saying a great deal to be our best right back, the 2 we have kept are dreadful. Laird has had very good loan spells so far but injuries have slowed his development. He will have a great season for QPR and will be one of their best players if he stays fit. Dalot will cost us a lot of points and AWB will hardly play, I’d rather Laird was given the chance.

How many eyes have been cast over Ethan Laird Loads. Surely if he was ready to challenge for the first team someone will have seen something by now!

Dalston is not dreadful ans has played well so far, and ETH obviously sees something in him more than Laird.

Laird looks good, but our best RB? I he was, he would still be here.

I think Dalot has looked pretty good so far. I'm not including the Brighton and Brentford games as everyone to a man was pretty poor.

I thought he was excellent against Liverpool, kept Diaz quiet all game bar one moment when Diaz got away from him.

Against Southampton he was solid and got an assist for the winning goal.

I think with Antony coming in on the right it gives a chance for them to strike up a good partnership down that side. Both Portuguese speakers will probably help them build a relationship down that flank a little quicker and communication shouldn't be an issue.

I think Dalot looks quite well suited to playing as an inverted full back which is ideal for a player like Antony who likes to stay wider more often.

He was highly rated as a youngster and is only 23 years old and has plenty of room for growth. While under EtH he'll have a coach who excels at making players better.

I don't know if he'll ultimately be good enough, to be honest there are too many factors to make any certain predictions. He'll be the first choice RB until at least January by the sounds of it. Let's see how he does.

GDS, I've probably watched him no more than you have. Manager after manager has sent him out on loan. He's clearly not ready and I don't imagine he ever will be at 21. By 21 he should have given atleast one manager something to think about.

Just because you like him, doesn't make him good. Tired of this sentiment amongst our fans and club, this is why we are stuck with players like Jones on massive wages.

31 Aug 2022 22:47:13
Yes you’re right we keep players like Jones because someone you don’t know on a forum has a different opinion about a player than you, weird thing to say it’s sentimental, I’ve seen AWB enough times to know he isn’t very good and that Laird is better than him if a little green. Dalot has had 2 good games and I have the improvement continues but I’d be surprised if he’s out first choice right back in 12 months.

Yeah laird is better than AWB, hence all those prem clubs scrambling to sign him. ? Yet another one who states their opinion as fact.

RW,

I literally just said it’s my opinion. Where are all the premier league clubs scrambling for AWB then? We are desperate to sell him and nobody wants him. Are you honestly saying you think he’s good?

Where did I say he's good? Don't put words in my mouth, he is clearly better than Laird right now. And most probably will be in the future. Ethan Laird will never make it at Manchester United.
