Any truth in this guys?

Antony to Man United is very much still on. The deal is one to keep an eye on during the remainder of the transfer window. United haven't got a specific price yet, but the price discussed in Holland is around €70m

Would you sign Antony for €70 million?

Agree0 Disagree0

I am never concerned or Interested in the money aspect of the game as the numbers are simply unfathomable and it’s not my cash.

Footballing wise, I’ve always preferred us with a fluid front 3 rather than a traditional No9 like Ronaldo now, and signing this guy is a move towards that fluidity and is a good replacement for Greenwood.

He seems to be eth's guy. So very good sign if the club brings him in. Same with other signings, if eth is happy with ins and outs then we are in much better shape than setting him up to fail with players he doesn't really fancy while also trying to establish a new system and way of playing.

Seems like Martinez over pau Torres was heavily influenced by EtH. So that is another good sign.

Especially this season I think we need to back EtH and give him as much of his asks as we can, then it is over to him to get his squad playing how he wants them to.

Is Anthony worth that money, or good enough? No idea. But I am very happy if EtH is getting his players.

I prefer a fluid front 3 too! I think keeping Ronaldo is a setback and will prevent this from happening. I think he's gone the wrong way about things and now has done too much damage to come back.

Do Utd need a wide right player? Sancho has played there in preseason with Rashford only effective on the left, plus we have Elanga and arguably Eriksen. I think there is scope for another attacking player and Antony is certainly different to any of them.
Is he worth it? Ajax hold the cards, they don’t need to sell (even though they generally do in the end) and they know we want him. So it’s another 25% inflated fee that Utd always end up paying.
Overall I’m not convinced though he is an exciting player to watch. Personally I’d prefer a central player.

Not a chance. I’d much rather we went for Depay or Dembele instead. Both are available, would cost about a third of what Ajax would want for Anthony (maybe less) and have proven themselves over multiple seasons and in multiple teams and leagues.

21 Jul 2022 00:56:41
What exactly has Dembele proven?

21 Jul 2022 06:40:45
Depay or dembele? Come on!
I agree with dodgy, if it’s a player ETH wants then that’s good enough for me and good to see club backing him!
Whether it happens or not god knows but I expect another 2 or 3 in and quite a few out!

21 Jul 2022 07:52:19
Anthony is a great player to watch very skillful rough around the edges but can be a wordie with the right guidance and with eth i think he'd be a superstar of the future along side sancho.

21 Jul 2022 09:32:15
Depay - seriously?

Dembele has been at Barcelona since 2017 and has done absolutely nothing but constantly get injured.

21 Jul 2022 10:06:35
What sim0 said.

21 Jul 2022 10:26:16
Assumed Redseven meant the Moussa flavour of Dembele, as didn't the Ousmane variety sign a new contract last week making him much more expensive than 1/ 3 Antony's valuation. May be mistaken!

21 Jul 2022 11:25:51
I think that this could be a late one (unless someone else goes for him) and will possibly be dependent on whether Ronaldo leaves. If he does I think we will go for Antony rather than a traditional number 9 and flex the front 3 between Rashford, Antony, Martial, Elanga and bring through some of the youngsters.
Could even flex to a 352 and have the full backs providing the width with 2 of the abve names in attack.

21 Jul 2022 13:47:52
Spenno is correct, I did mean Moussa. As for what Dembele and Depay have done, the former has banged in 75 goals in 167 league appearances since leaving Old Trafford and also has an international goals per game ratio that’s higher than England’s record scorer. As for Dembele, he’s notched 10 league goals or more in six of the past seven seasons, netting 79 league goals in his last 166 games. Both are proven goal scorers, both are consistent and both would hit the ground running. Most importantly though, both would cost around a third of the price of Anthony:

I’m not saying that Anthony is a bad player, but he’s only really had one good season and that was in the Dutch league. For some of the prices being quoted for him, we could have signed a CB, a CDM and a forward player in Nathan Colins, Bissouma, and either Depay or Dembele. All of those players would likely settle in much faster than Anthony too given that Colins and Bissouma are already based in the UK and Depay and Dembele have lived/ played here before.

21 Jul 2022 17:19:34
Bissouma was a non starter.

All 3 of ten Haag's signings look very promising. We are going in the right direction and I'm sure ten haag is considering options for midfield, which he clearly believes is critically important to his style of play.

Think we’d only sign Antony if De Jong deal was definitely dead. We just have the money otherwise to spend on another RW. Sancho RW / Rashford LW looks to be first choice line up based on pre season. Of course we need cover and if Ronaldo were to leave that puts Martial as striker and cover options are only then Elanga / Garnacho / Amad / Pellestri - though the latter two surely more loan options this season?

Rashford could play as a forward to and Sancho switch to LW which would accommodate a new RW. Not seeing it though.

22 Jul 2022 07:06:08
I agree with Eric, I definitely prefer a more fluid front three. Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez was probably my favourite forwards line we have had in my lifetime. At the time none were what you'd call a traditional No.9.

All three could and would play in any of the three forward positions and would frequently switch roles.

Still gutted that we didn't get to see those three play together for longer.

22 Jul 2022 08:42:26
There was no chance those three ego’s were going to hang around together for long!

22 Jul 2022 10:19:35
FiremanC, Tevez left because United weren't prepared to pay the huge fee to his agent/ third party owner.

Ronaldo left a couple of years later to join Real Madrid which was his dream club.

When they were here there was a lack of ego from them, mostly because they were young and has Sir Alex as their manager.

22 Jul 2022 18:43:22
Ronaldo / Rooney / Tevez was a dream front 3 and as noted none of them a traditional No.9 at that time. Oh to relive the heady days of 2008 again.

Antony rumours look to be gathering pace. Ajax playing hardball over the fee as well they should but he's another player, like Martinez, who seemingly very much wants the move to United. Pre-season we look a different team sure but Rashford, Martial and to a lesser extent Sancho all have much to improve on based on last and previous years. Will Elanga make it at first team level? Will Garnacho breakthrough into the first XI next season? Is there a longer term plan for Amad and Pellestri other than just loaning them out? Lots of questions which to me means a move for Antony looks far more likely than not IF we can afford him. I am still not convinced we would get Antony and De Jong though in addition to Martinez, Malacia and Eriksen joining.

I suspect we are negotiating with Ajax to reduce the transfer fee for Antony and perhaps just as crucially gain the most favourable payment terms so we can stretch our buying power as much as possible this season. Suspect it only gets the green light though once Ronaldo confirmed to be leaving.
