David Ornstein suggesting Kyle Walker-Peters may be of interest to United if looking to strengthen at right-back. £20m estimated value per Transfermarkt. Everton interested too.

Would much prefer Tino Livramento if we are signing a Southampton RB.

10 Jul 2022 22:30:05
Shappy i agree livermento has far more potential for me plus he's abit taller!

10 Jul 2022 23:15:18
Livramento has just done his ACL hasn’t he?

11 Jul 2022 00:33:17
Yes, and isn't expected back until 2023.

11 Jul 2022 00:47:30
Would rather see Ethan laird than was pending on KWP.

11 Jul 2022 02:35:18
If we are going for a RB I can't see past Dumfries who has been mentioned previously.

11 Jul 2022 03:25:32
+1 Dumfries

Walker Peters no better than what we have. Livramento as mentioned, did his ACL against Brighton, unlikely to be the same player.

Good point FiremanC, Keane, Van Nistelrooy, Shearer, Xavi and Ibrahimovic all struggled with their careers after they done their ACL!

To be honest I'd forgotten about his injury. No reason in the modern era for a player not to be able to come back just as good and strong as before with modern medical practices.

That said, you can't sign a player who will continue to be injured for the next 6 months. I'd imagine no one would look to sign him before next summer at the earliest to see how he comes back. While it's more likely a move in the summer of 2024 after he's had 18 months back.

However, on to the points about KWP, can we really see Southampton selling him while Livramento is still out injured? I doubt it.

They are keen on Brandon Williams possible we could see 1 go either way from each club.
Williams is right footed so can easily cover both sides.
I would like to see if laird can force his way in he was always a youth I hoped could make it to the 1st team.
He had done well in his loans albeit at lower levels. As back up to dalot he may be good enough maybe he will impress pre season.

Ports, it is a good point yeah, because the lad is only 19 and all the players you mentioned were established pro’s at a decent age. Sometimes youngsters can find it difficult to get back and establish that elite level after major injuries.

Lots of examples of that fireman.
Couple of examples at united even.

FiremanC, it's always difficult to tell whether it was an injury with a young player that disrupted their development or whether it was something else entirely.

Just as many young players show great promise as youngsters breaking into a team who then for one reason or another never fulfil their potential.

Some probably get a bit too much too young and it goes to their heads, some have the talent but not the mentality to make it to the top, some are over hyped and were never going to be able to live up to the expectations of them, while some also pick up bad injuries at key moments in their development.

So it's not quite as simple as blaming an injury for why a young talent doesn't reach their perceived potential.

Ok Shappy, as always you know best mate.

FiremanC, just common sense really. Was it injury that stopped Januzaj becoming a top player? Or Ravel Morrison?

Not all young talented players fulfill their potential for a wide variety of reasons.

While on the other hand with modern medicine there are very few injuries that a player cannot fully recover from and return to their previous physical capabilities.

ACL injuries are no longer the career ending injury they used to be. In fact many players are back fully training with the squad within 6-8 months.

Whether a player ever fully recovers mentally is a different question. Do they fully trust the joint afterwards, or are they scared to take a knock again. But that relates more to mental resilience rather than physically being able to heal.

Young players can have their careers derailed by injury, although for me that's more often the case when they repeatedly miss long periods of playing time due to injury. Missing out on developing and growing as a player.

We saw this with Will Keane, who just couldn't stay fit for 4 games in a row and as such only played a dozen or so games over a 3 year period.
