De Gea to sign a new 5 year deal apparently. Taking a pay cut too.

What's everyone's thoughts if this is true?

He has been one of the only players that have earned their paychecks. He has one episode of the fax machine but has always given his all (according to me) and deserves more credit. Sure, he is limited in some ways but so is every player and just the fact he plays behind lindelof and Maguire is worthy of more credit . I am not sure about the length of the contract but can't complain if he stays with us for a few more years. Keepers age differently of course.

5 years seems excessive imo.

Delighted. has been a great servant and is a top keeper.

Nothing against him getting a new deal on a lower wage. While his form has been good this season he isn't currently worth being the 3rd highest paid player in the league only behind Ronaldo and KDB.

I think 5 years is probably a bit much given his age, his dip in form (even though he has recovered somewhat) and the fact we have a new manager who over the next season or two may look to phase him out.

A three year deal with an optional 4th year seems fair. That would take him up to 34 or 35 if the option was activated.

A little surprised its a 5 year deal, I was expecting United to look for a replacement in a couple of years simply because I am not convinced he would suit what ETH wants in a keeper.

Still of all the players in the squad, De Gea is the least concern for me.

Unlike Brunos renewal which I think may come back to bite us, Ten Hag must have had a say in this. People read into him wanting Henderson at Ajax meaning he likes him more than De Gea which if he signs, is obviously not true.

De Gea has done everything right. Even after being treated poorly by Ole he's been the consummate professional and we need more players like him in the squad.

Great news. He is an outstanding keeper imo. For every mistake he has 10 saves that has won us points where we did not deserve it.

MEN had an article implying that Maguire thinks United's defensive woes are partly as a result of de Gea's lack of command in the air, poor distribution and lack of mobility.

03 Jun 2022 16:48:23
I think maguire needs to look in the mirror.

03 Jun 2022 17:14:49
Maguire cannot critize anybody and needs to take a good long look in the mirror or YouTube footage of his games If he is. dea gea is a good keeper and is actually one of the ones I like from this squad, he has saved us from embarrassing scorelines numerous times over the past few years.

Without DeGea for the past 6 years or so we would have been mid table and below for the majority of it. Maguire needs to f*ck off the useless lump.

Love a bit of straight talking Bren. ??.

03 Jun 2022 22:08:31
Keeper is the least of our worries. Glad he’s staying on.

04 Jun 2022 00:29:22
It's true, in that if our keeper had a better command of the air, better mobility and better distribution our defence would be stronger.

However, we would also be better defensively if our back 4 were all better, we had a DM who could play the position, our front players tracked back better and the Midfield weren't complete toilet.

We would also have been better defensively if we had a decent manager for the last 3 years and coaches who could sort out the mess.

DDG 2 seasons ago looked a bit off. DDG last season looked great. There were games when it was like it was keeper training with zero defense in front of him.

Been said 1000 times, but everything is good so long as EtH has endorsed it. Give him the tools he wants and let him have a real shot at establishing a new look team.

Looks like a long summer of rumours in and out. Buckle up!

I read that it was an extension to 2025, which is only 1 year more after the mandatory 1 year extension we tend to do.
Its the position we least need to focus on, so seems to make sense.
