Afternoon Ed,
Zakaria noise coming out of Germany seems to be being generated by the players agent.

Is Haidara the no1 choice for the defensive midfielder this window, IF the club look to sign someone?

{Ed002's Note - I don't know what you mean about the agent. Zakaria and Haidera are unrelated - they play in different positions.}

Agree0 Disagree0

@Ed002 Aren't Haidara and Zakaria both central midfielders? Both seem box-to-box to me, though I guess Zakaria is more defensive. Seems a very fine-grained distinction.

{Ed002's Note - Zakaria would eb a Matic replacement as a DM.}

Zakaria often plays as DM and at times covers at CB.

There is an option for both players to be a viable option to us depending on what we want to do this window. Zakaria I view as a low risk, low cost option with medium to high upside. As Ed002 says he would offer a Matic replacement and I feel would free up McTominy to be able to be more box to box which is more his strength than HM. Haidara would be part of the attacking 2 players if RR sticks withhis 4222 but would come at a greater cost so would need to be seen as more in line with what the future of the club would be.
For me, both of these would add to the team this year and allow the club to move on some of the players that are obvioulsy not part of our future. Matic/ Mata/ Donny.

Haidara most definitely won't be playing as one of the attacking two midfielders if we sign him, where on Earth do you get this stuff from? ?.

Zakaria is available for free in the summer, Kessie is available for free in the summer, and they are both very good players that could play in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-2-2. Given the cost involved they would both be fantastic options to play alongside McTominay in the midfield. Kessie is a more progressive player on and off the ball whereas Zakaria is a more genuine defensive midfielder so they could easily play together. If we persist with the current system, options of Zakaria, Kessie, McTominay, and Donny would be miles better than what we currently have.

{Ed002's Note - It is rather more complicated than “free”.}
