Morning Ed, there were some reports came out yesterday saying we are in talks to try and sign Julian Alvarez from River Plate. Do you know anything about him and whether or not we hold any interest.

If it's true my guess would be that Cavani is off and he would be the replacement.

{Ed002's Note - Julian Alvarez (S/RW/F) was looked at by Aston Villa but they opted for Buendia. Milan at one point thought that they would lose Alexis Saelemaekers and declared an interest but that has likely passed. Spurs have several versatile forwards they have shown an interest in and see value in Alvarez. Bayer Leverkusen are looking to the player as a potential Bellarabi replacement. There are significant changes coming at Inter Milan in the summer of 2022 and they will make an attractive offer. Fiorentina see him as an option to replace Vlahovic. Joaquin Correa arrived on loan but they continue to look for options who can provide more width and Alvarez is very much on their list. Juventus and Barcelona are keen although he is not the preferred choice for either. Will be available in January which may give Barcelona an edge as they have a pressing need.}

On one hand we are likely to lose Cavani, Mata, Lingard and Martial from our forward options by the start of next season.

Leaving just Ronaldo, Rashford, Greenwood, Sancho and Bruno.

Yet we have Amad, Pellistri, Elanga, Shoretire and Hannibal in our youth set up all looking like being close to ready for more game time.

Personally if we are to continue with the 4222 type shape then Ronaldo, Rashford, Greenwood and Elanga for the striker roles should be sufficient. Do we need to splash out on another option who would either be 4th choice or 3rd choice pushing Greenwood to 4th choice?

While Cavani is a great player to lose, his impact has been limited due to his injuries.

Looking at the wing/ creative midfield options we have Bruno and Sancho as clear first choice, while Amad and Hannibal look ready to get a few more minutes. I think an argument could be made that we could do with another more experienced 3rd choice option in this area of the pitch. Wild card could be Donny stepping up in this role, although personally I don't think he is well suited to how Rangnick plays.

shappy rashford doesn't score enough or do enough and elenga is yet to prove himself he is still a kid as is greenwood ( although he has proven he can score but can go missing) but you can't expect them to lead the line at there age.

we need a proven goal scorer to play along side ronaldo next year although it will be ronaldo's last season i think the club would activate the added year into the deal.

amad and hannibal are a few years away from breaking into the first team,

if we can get haaland that would be amazing although i think he is real madrid bound along with mbappe, they will have some side in a few years.

Bolger, Rashford has 91 goals and 57 assists for us already despite playing mostly on the wing, and suffering injuries over the past couple of seasons.

He has been poor this season after coming back from injury, but I wouldn't write him off yet.

He got 21 goals and 15 assists last season and 22 goals and 12 assists the season before.

Achieved in a team that was playing poorly and struggled to create chances.

I really don't get the Rashford bashing that happens on here. He's been one of our better players over the past few years, with only Bruno doing more, he's young and comes from our academy, and from his charity work seems a decent caring guy. Plus he is prepared to play through the pain for the club and not cry off because he has a sore toe.

If we are to sign a striker we can go down one of two routes.

We either sign a top player such as Mbappe, Haaland, Lautaro Martinez or Vlahovic who would cost 100m and/ or insane wages. A player who would demand to be first choice pushing Rashford and Greenwood out of the side most of the time.

Or we go for a solid squad player such as Andre Silva, Emmanuel Dennis etc. Players who will be happy to be part of the squad and wouldn't block Greenwood.

Personally I think Greenwood has the potential to challenge Mbappe and Haaland for the Balon d'Or in a few years time if he can reach his potential.

Why block him? Ronaldo will start when fit, which leaves one spot for Rashford and Greenwood. Those three playing most of the minutes is more than good enough. With someone like Elanga playing a few games here and there or McNeil or Hugill from the academy.

I really don't see the point in blowing most of the budget for a player to fight with Rashford and Greenwood to start along side Ronaldo most games.

We spent 77m signing Sancho who struggled to get in ahead of Greenwood before the change in shape.

Don't underestimate the players we have, especially not for a shiny new toy.

I actually like rashford it wasnt a bashing.

If we are not going to get a striker we need to spend monwy on getting a midfield in that can control and dictate and provide more chances.
