Southgate isn't looking such a bad Manager now, is he?

{Ed077's Note - I wonder if there were people saying "Tuchel isn't that great" a while ago ?

Dan Ashworth was onto something but the board were “uninspired” apparently.

Southgate was a brilliant England manager. Better than all others bar one. Horrible job for a pretty unrealistic set of fans. Only ever won 1 comp 60 years ago and the fans were unhappy with him for broomhill to finals and semi finals which is great going for underdogs imo.
But it's very difficult to keep people happy in that job.

Ken

You were one of those shouting no to Southgate, is the new string setting a new tune.

11 Jun 2025 12:52:44
I think Southgate created an awesome 'mood' in the camp, something that had been sadly lacking for a long time, and something we seem to struggle with.

He seemed tactically naive and afraid to take chances, so I am not suggesting he is an amazing Manager, but Tuchel is apparently a master technician, but seems to rub players up the wrong way. Each could perhaps learn from the other.

Rdf. I would not want him at united i think he did a great job for England and that's a very different job to club management. If you read my posts on this I've always maintained he did a great job for England. Which he did. Awful nation to manage. but he did great.

11 Jun 2025 13:14:42
He'll make an awesome customer services manager somewhere. :D
To be fair he came so close to winning something which hasn't been done for yonks with this team. And from what I saw last night doubt I will any time soon!

No one can say the football or Southgate tactics are inspiring……. Decent enough man manager, but too scared of he’s own shadow in, In game management, which was the Achilles heel of him, would never want him being manager of United.
TBF a decent manager would have won one of the finals he got to, because the stars aligned in getting to the final and was there for the taking, but along with the players he bottled it….
Bobby Robson, glen Hoddle Terry Venables were all better England managers in my view, ok suppose the stat bores will come up with some tosh, but I know which teams I would rather watch.

11 Jun 2025 19:11:23
Did SouthGates england beat anyone decent?

11 Jun 2025 20:34:00
When did England ever beat anyone decent when it mattered except for 1966.

12 Jun 2025 00:51:26
He didn't beat anyone he wasn't supposed to. Every time his england team came up against any difficulty, they lost.

12 Jun 2025 07:46:21
Who's didn't?

12 Jun 2025 08:33:59
Jeez Southgate
Did well to get us to finals later stages but did have favourable draws. When it really mattered he didn’t try to win, just tried not to lose and edge a game. That was the total antithesis of SAF. Fortune favours the brave, old saying, but Southgate could have won if he had been at least a bit more adventurous.
I lost a lot of enthusiasm for watching the England team under him.

Looks to me like people who decided early about Amorim have already shown the same trait with Tuchel.

Southgate at United could have discouraged me from watching United, that bad.

Lastly, watching England and a lot of Prem teams now is like watching a bunch of robots. Little individuality and outstanding audacity so smaller teams like Andorra can stick 11 behind the ball and cause frustration. The players are knackered and just want to be on holiday, so it wasn’t a shock to just scrape by.
Tuchel is an interesting England choice and we can judge in tournaments. Thank heaven Southgate is no longer manager and isn’t with us either.

12 Jun 2025 11:18:31
Seems from around the time billy big bolloks bellingham came into the england side they have all parted ways and all the hard work Southgate did keeping them all together has evaporated again.

I didn’t want Southgate either. Let’s see how Tuchel does at a tournament before we start flip flopping our thoughts as usual.

12 Jun 2025 11:30:37
It will be a very long time maybe another 60 years before anybody does Better with England imo.
I'll ask again who was the last England manager to beat a top team in knockouts of a major tournament. I think they beat Spain in Europe 96 on pens that was long before spain were a super power at intl level.
England are not good at football. Minnows at intl level.

12 Jun 2025 16:50:22
Southgate was a good manager for international football, I don't think he's suited to club football. At least not at the highest end.

He's good a building a team atmosphere, and his tactics suit being the underdog.

Those pragmatic tactics suit both knockout football, and as they are simple to follow, they suit teams that don't get much time to train together to build up a rapport.

Perfect for international football.

12 Jun 2025 18:24:14
Bellamy looks good at international level, you all need to settle down.

12 Jun 2025 21:32:38
They are 2 different jobs. Intl suits some and they can't do it at club level.
Capello was the opposite.
You can excel in 1 arena but not the other. Very different jobs that can't be compared imo.
It will be interesting to see how tuchel adapts. I have a feeling he'll be bored and it won't suit him.

13 Jun 2025 06:17:26
Let’s be fair, Tuchel can’t lose, utterly ridiculous giving him 18 month contract, doubt he wins a tournament or gets even deep into, so can just say same ol England, defies all odds and wins, he is hero in meantime gets nicely paid with no incentive to try anything new why would he…. if he was looking to make changes why on earth does Kane start both, what’s he learn from that… why does Pickford start, why on earth Jordan Henderson get anywhere near team… all utterly ridiculous and all pointless excercise.
