I've just watched Gyökeres' goals from last season and there's no doubt the lad knows where the net is. If his asking price is £58m then he's worth a shot considering what some other no.9s will be going for this window.

What really stood out to me though, was the defending in Portugal is really really bad.

That’s what worries me a little. Will he be any good in a poor United team against much better defender with far less space.

Lots of the goals I’ve seen at sporting, the defenders are nowhere to be seen half the time. Won’t get that space in the prem.

He may well be, but it’s still a gamble.

Hopefully a gamble that pays off, guess there aren’t any guarantees when buying a player.

What you need above all to succeed in the Premier League is strength and pace, and Gyökeres has both in abundance. His shot accuracy sits around 70%, while our entire team managed only 50% last season.

He converts roughly 35% of his chances, placing him among the league’s most clinical finishers. Although the defenders in Portugal may not be as tough as those in the Premier League, most of his goals come from receiving the ball with his back to goal, handling tight marking, turning defenders, and finding the net. That’s exactly the kind of striker I think would do well in England.

Gyökeres did well when he was playing in England in what is a tough league. Granted, it wasn't the PL, but it was a tough league. Also, he has done well in European competitions, so all in all, he must surely be way better than we have at present. So, whilst I understand the concerns re Gyökeres, I think given the price, our situation and requirements, and the paucity of striker availability, he has to be well worth a punt.

He won't be in a poor United teamm.

10 Jun 2025 08:56:07
He managed to score pretty consistently in the Championship I'm sure he'll be fine. I doubt he'll get 50+ goals a season playing in the EPL, but the guy is a finisher and know where to be and when to get chances.

If we sign him I'm very confident that he'll get 20+ league goals for us next season, as long as he stays fit obviously. That is also if course if we get him.

10 Jun 2025 09:12:26
Big shout shappy, 20 plus goals in the league. i'd go 25 goals all comps, given our recent woes in front of goal. Its not like a switch. But I think with him, Mbuemo and Cunha, it changes us dramatically.

Sporting being reported to have gone back on their "gentlemen's agreement" and applied a bit of Utd tax.

10 Jun 2025 12:35:49
I don’t understand why any player would think that club owners are gentlemen.

10 Jun 2025 12:48:29
Add to the mix, reports that Sesko is wanted by Saudi. Which could push Arsenal back in for Gyokeres.

10 Jun 2025 12:56:44
A report in Portuguese outlet Record claims Sporting president Federico Varandas has increased the asking price to £68m following enquiries, leaving Gyokeres "furious".

10 Jun 2025 13:19:14
Fallguy, Cesko has said he doesn't want to go to Saudi so I don't think it'll make much of a difference.

Angel, as a team last season we had the 7th most shots in the league, but scored the 16th most goals.

We massively underperformed in terms of turning chances into goals. Gyökeres is very clinical, his rubbish conversion rate is higher than Salah's.

If he can keep his shot conversion rate around the same and he can get 3 shots a game then then he'll practically score in every game.

Add Cunha and Mbeumo, along with Amad being a year older and more experienced, you'd hope that we become a better team next season. So you'd expect us to be higher than the 7th most shots in the league.

Increased chances and with a striker who is fat more clinical, then you'd expect him to get a good amount of goals. I don't think 20+ in the league is unrealistic at all.

10 Jun 2025 14:53:22
I feel the standard of goalkeeping in the Portuguese league will be contributing to his conversion rate, but still confident he’d score a hatful especially with Cunha et al supplying the chances.

10 Jun 2025 15:43:20
Gyökeres also bagged a hat-trick v Man City in the UCL.

10 Jun 2025 16:57:15
Is he fat though Shappy?

We have that many shots because we take bad shots. We score so few goals because we take so many nad shots and also make the wrong decisions of where/ when to cross.

New front line and bruno mainly from deeper is certainly more exciting than trying the same thing again.

10 Jun 2025 18:48:34
I think it is a bit unrealistic shappy. You're talking about 3 shots a game, it's all pie in the sky stuff until he is actually having 3 shots a game. Yes, I
If he gets 3/ 4 chances a game, I'd expect him to hit 25 but come on man, there's that and then there are facts. Look at our stats over the last couple of years. It's a massive jump to go from that to 25 goals in a season, his first season too ?

Get off football manager ?.

10 Jun 2025 19:31:43
Total waste of time stats trying to transfer them stats to EPL, maybe he gets 5 seconds to get a shot off before a defender wakes up, if he getting 3 shots a game in Portugal he probably gets 1 or 2 per game here.

Total pointless stats they are.

10 Jun 2025 20:41:37
Angel, Gyökeres manages 4.2 shots a game in Portugal, one of only 3 players to have more than 3 shots a game.

In the EPL this season Haaland, Salah, Palmer, Semenyo, Cunha and Eze all managed 3 or more shots a game. While Isak, Bruno Fernandes, Saka and Wissa all averaged over 2.6 shots per game.

Statistically speaking it looks like players get far more shots per game in the EPL compared to Liga Nos.

Even Bruno managed 2.7 shots a game in our side last season. I'd be very confident of Gyökeres getting around 3 shots per game. Given that he typically scores 1 out of every 3 shots, that'd put him on for around 38 goals in the league next season. Obviously there is a difference in quality between the EPL and Liga Nos and we can expect to see his conversion rate drop a little. But it'd have to drop by over 50% for him to not score 20 goals in the EPL if he's still managing 3 shots per game.

I really wouldn't be worried about whether the guy can score in this league, the goals are the same size after all.

11 Jun 2025 06:36:01
Absolute tosh I don’t know if you can even believe yourself, in reality Salah would probably get 50-60 a season in Portugal, but it’s all pie in the sky, even if he did come here and better defenders even allowed him 3 shots per game, maybe the shots are not as clean because under more pressure to shoot from poor position, maybe goalkeepers are better, just because goals are same size! What’s standing in that goal and the quality of player in between him and the goal is what matters……. Saying he gets 3 shots per game and scores one in 3 so that’s 38 goals per season is quite laughable in the anybodies world….

11 Jun 2025 07:43:01
Shappy some of your posts are absolute waffle ?.

I've just had a quick look at the stats and Bruno had .81 shots on target per game for us last season in the premier league of those 2.67 shots per 90 mins and 65 percent of those came from outside the box.

How that translates into Gyokeres easily gets 25 goals a season, I'll never know ? it's all made up stuff. Stick to what we have seen and our actual stats. We scored 57 goals last year.

11 Jun 2025 23:39:24
There are very few guarantees.
Shappy you can't apply simple mathematics to numbers and expect a trend to continue in sport when there are so many variables.
There are dozens of reasons why some transfers don't work and do work.
You pays your money and take your chance.
Lots of things can go right or wrong. Personally I think he would thrive.
