Been reading here and elsewhere everyone's take and assumptions on how Amorim will set us up and who plays.

I suspect he will see the same strengths and weaknesses of the players that eth saw and same group that plays today will be playing with maybe one or 2 changes.

Question is how long before we go to a back 3 as some teams who have tried changing from a back 4 can look clueless and very easy to score against.

Assuming we will get a bad result somewhere early in his tenure. The test comes with the uproar from the fan base and pundits who will pile on with criticism and does he stick to it or does something pragmatic that works with these players until such time that he thinks they can play his way.

He will have a few weeks before a massive test at arsenal. The good news is Yoro and mount are back and i would like to assume one or both our left backs and maybe Kobe will be back so he will have a bigger squad to select from.

I would like to see many who generally go on the international break stay and give him a week of working with them instead of playing in the micky mouse Nations trophy international.

Don't really see why players like Bruno need to go. Portugal has plenty of options and are walking this thing. Deligt and zirksee don't get many minutes either so why even go. Garnacho same as he gets token sub minutes with Argentina.

Maybe we will see many pull out due to knocks:)

Do you go with a coach because he plays a certain way and his side seems highly effective with the expectation that he will try to implement that at the new club?
Or does a great coach adapt to whatever is at his disposal?
What is Utd's ideal formation, based on their current squad?
I don't have the answers to any of these, but obviously Sporting are incredible atm. Just wary that we got Erik for the same reason, and that both Dutch/ Portuguese leagues are vastly inferior to the Prem. It will be rocky.

Back 3 could help Casemiro whos wages we are stuck with. He could easily play in the centre of a back 3 and extend his career.

07 Nov 2024 13:30:19
I saw enough of Casemiro in the heart of the defence last year to last a lifetime! :p
Get what you're saying though, with there being the opportunity to play two faster players either side. Wonder if they'll reinvestigate the Branthwaite deal, or Diomande next summer.

Ladies and gentlemen, Utd will be playing four four ?in’ two.

Like most systems there will be players that it suits and players that it does not and it will be on them with the coaching team to adapt.
It could be argued that the current system is not exactly getting results, I am sure that there are other factors but let's be honest it has not been good. Yes there will be games it looks bad. nothing new there.
I think the back 3 will suit the CB's that we currently have and will help cover the left back situation. Dalot has been okay going forward but looks lost defensively in the box.

I am hoping it will allow for some brave selections that side with maybe Amass getting a run.
Attacking wise I feel it will offer Hojlund some suppport without the wingers just cutting in and shooting. Fernandes, Amad and Mount could do well.
I just hope that Amorim is brave and commits to his strategy.

As a team we just don't work hard enough collectively as a unit when you watch other teams in Europe.

Ruud said something along the lines of players not staying in their positions in the first half and I agree. Its confusing seeing where some players drift to and thinking what is he doing there.

No one seems to like to play in the middle of the pitch between the lines. Bruno is left wing or right wing but never in the middle. makes the winger a lot more effective if you play through the middle and then to the wings.

Amazing your only noticing that now achmad its been that way for 2 years.
2 weeks ago you said we were playing really well and that it was individuals that were choosing us nothing to do with shape tactics.
Let's hope the proper new head coach gets it sorted over the next 6 months.

Bruno roaming makes Höjlunds job harder too. He needs players closer to him to lay the ball off to when receiving the ball with his back to goal.

Tumble

its not eth thing if that is what you are trying to say. its been like that for 5 years. Bruno has never played in the middle. I think mostly because he does not like the contact that comes with it and smaller area to operate in. He likes space and freedom of movement and why he drifts left and right. Funny thing is the only guy who actually did play there was mc when we moved him up and was there on runs and picking up goals and rebounds.

I miss mc and was not in favor of selling him.

Does formations matter? The manager like most top managers will have positioning for with or without the ball. Surely the 3 at the back is when in possession moving up the pitch/ transitioning and more like 5 at the back when defending/ out of possession?

I think formation matters a great deal.
I don't know any coach who doesn't have a base from where he wants both in and out possession positioning to stem from.
All coaches in every team in the world have a base from which they want the team to build from or defend from.
To your point supasub nobody stays in one position from start to finish as there is so many variables in any game but the core basic formation is really important.
In the best and most fluid teams everybody knows where they should be when they are in and out of possession.
Having no base formation would mean that players would not have a defined structure to play to. You can't have players running willy nilly wherever they want when they want or there would be no cohesive shape to fall into when they lose possession.
I don't think which formation they start with matters as long as everybody knows and adheres to their job. 343 442 433 etc
There are so many variations and formations open to any coach but they must have one that is the base from which they play both with and without the ball.
There must be a plan everybody must buy into the plan and play their role within that plan.
It only takes 1 player not to track back or, fall in, or not to run into space etc for the plan to fail.
There must ba a starting formation and plan to build from I don't know any team that's ever won without having a base formation.

09 Nov 2024 13:27:09
Yes Ken, you won't have the same formation in and out of possession, like I said. The "core basic" formation you speak of you'll probably only see from a goal kick and a few set pieces. Just as important is the shape around the pitch in and out of position, working out the opposition (which the players should be capable of doing between them! ) and distances and positions taken up by players wherever the action is on the pitch. If any players are running around "willy nilly" I suggest they get shipped out.
What I'm more interested in is how the new manager is going to get results, build confidence, build spirit, playing style, galvanise the whole squad, who to bring in, who to move on, Intensity, desire, workrate etc. The basic rigid formation on paper plays little part in achieving our goals as it is so variable.

09 Nov 2024 15:28:58
Haven't we been playing with an informal back three for most of the season already.

09 Nov 2024 16:51:57
The formation situation looms large but doesn’t need to. Various other Prem sides play it like Wolves successfully did today. Who’d swap that team for what we have right now? I certainly wouldn’t, I don’t expect an immediate turnaround but from the new year hope we’ll be climbing the table pretty nicely. :/.
